Chapter 8: The Choice He Made Before I Knew Him

For a moment, I thought I had misheard him.

The hallway noise disappeared.

The cameras.

The whispers.

The people watching.

Everything faded until there was only one sentence repeating in my mind.

*The person who hired you was me.*

I stared at Ethan.

“No.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Something closer to regret.

“Emma—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t understand.””

“I do.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

Because suddenly, every memory from the past eleven months felt different.

The first day I walked into Carter Tower.

The interview I thought was impossible.

The job offer that came faster than expected.

The way Ethan had seemed almost familiar from the beginning.

I had always assumed it was because he was kind.

Because he was patient.

Because he was different from other wealthy men.

But now I didn’t know what was real anymore.

Andrew watched silently.

And I hated that he looked satisfied.

Because this was what he wanted.

Not just to expose my feelings.

Not just to reveal my past.

He wanted to make me doubt the one person who had finally made me feel safe.

“You knew,” I whispered.

Ethan looked at me.

“What?””

“You knew who I was.””

A pause.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“How long?””

“Before your interview.””

The answer hurt more than I expected.

Andrew stepped forward.

“There it is.””

His voice was calm again.

“The truth.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Don’t.””

Andrew smiled.

“You hired her.””

“Yes.””

“You put her in your company.””

“Yes.””

“You gave her access to your life.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Because she was qualified.””

Andrew laughed.

“Qualified?””

He looked around.

“Everyone here should hear this.””

I wanted to disappear.

Not because I was ashamed.

Because I felt exposed.

Like the entire world was watching a private conversation I never agreed to have.

Andrew continued.

“Emma didn’t just become Ethan Carter’s assistant by chance.””

He pointed at me.

“She was placed there.””

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

Andrew looked at me.

“Tell him.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Tell him what?””

Andrew smiled.

“You weren’t the only one with a plan.””

Silence.

Ethan’s eyes stayed on me.

Waiting.

Not accusing.

Waiting.

That somehow hurt more.

“I didn’t have a plan to hurt you,” I said.

Andrew laughed.

“But you had a reason.””

I looked away.

Because there was a small piece of truth buried underneath his manipulation.

And I hated that.

“I wanted a way out,” I whispered.

Ethan’s expression softened slightly.

“Emma.””

“I was trying to leave Andrew.””

I looked at him.

“When I applied, I wasn’t thinking about you.””

The words felt cruel.

But they were honest.

“I didn’t know you.””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“I didn’t know what kind of person you were.””

“I know.””

“I just knew Andrew had connections in places I couldn’t escape.””

My voice became quieter.

“I thought if I had a stable job, my own money, and my own life, I could finally leave.””

Andrew’s smile faded.

Because that was not the story he wanted.

He wanted betrayal.

He wanted greed.

He wanted Ethan to believe I had been chasing power.

Not freedom.

“But why Carter Tower?”” Ethan asked.

The question was gentle.

I swallowed.

“Because Andrew told me you were impossible to manipulate.””

That surprised him.

“What?””

“He said you were careful. That you trusted almost nobody.””

I looked down.

“He thought if I worked near you, I could learn how you protected yourself.””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“And did you?””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“Because after I met you, I stopped seeing you as a way out.””

I looked at him.

“I saw you as a person.””

The hallway became silent.

Andrew’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Because he understood something.

He had spent months telling himself Ethan was just another person I used.

But Ethan knew better.

And so did I.

“You’re forgetting something,” Andrew said.

His voice cut through the moment.

“He still hired you.””

Ethan turned.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Andrew smiled.

“Answer that.””

Ethan didn’t move.

Because now everyone was waiting.

I was waiting.

Why had he chosen me?

The truth was something I had never asked.

Because I never wanted to know.

Sometimes not knowing was easier.

Ethan looked at me.

Then he spoke.

“Because I recognized her name.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

He took a breath.

“Eleven months ago, I was reviewing applicants for the position.””

He glanced at the crowd.

“Most applications looked the same. Perfect resumes. Perfect recommendations. People trying to impress me.””

His eyes returned to mine.

“Then I saw yours.””

I didn’t understand.

“Why?””

“Because your cover letter wasn’t about me.””

A strange feeling moved through my chest.

“What do you mean?””

“You didn’t write about my company. You didn’t write about my success. You didn’t mention my awards.””

Ethan’s voice softened.

“You wrote about wanting to build something of your own.””

I remembered.

Barely.

The words I wrote late at night.

The truth I never expected anyone important to read.

“I wrote that?””

“Yes.””

He smiled faintly.

“You said you wanted a workplace where people were valued more than their titles.””

My eyes burned.

“I remember.””

“I noticed.””

For a moment, Andrew disappeared.

The fear disappeared.

The chaos disappeared.

Because I finally understood.

Ethan hadn’t chosen me because Andrew sent me.

He hadn’t chosen me because of a secret plan.

He chose me because he saw something in me before I saw it myself.

But then Ethan’s expression changed.

And I knew there was more.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

The question was directed at him.

Not Andrew.

Not anyone else.

Ethan looked away.

“Because I knew about Andrew.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

The hallway became silent again.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Because I investigated him.””

Andrew’s expression changed.

“What?””

Ethan ignored him.

“Six months before Emma joined Carter Tower, my foundation began reviewing hospital partnerships.””

He looked at me.

“There were inconsistencies.””

“What kind?””

“Missing funds.””

A whisper moved through the crowd.

Ethan continued.

“Not enough to prove anything. Just enough to make me suspicious.””

I looked at Andrew.

He remained still.

Too still.

“I found connections between Andrew and several organizations.””

Ethan’s voice became colder.

“But I didn’t have evidence.””

“And me?””

“You were the one thing I didn’t understand.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“You applied for a job here while being engaged to the person I was investigating.””

My heart sank.

“So you thought I was involved.””

Ethan didn’t lie.

“At first.””

The honesty hurt.

But I appreciated it.

“I was careful.””

I nodded slowly.

“Then what changed?””

He looked at me.

“You.””

The answer was simple.

“You came to work every day and never asked for anything.””

He paused.

“You helped people who couldn’t help you back.””

My eyes filled.

“You remembered employees’ birthdays. You stayed late when someone else needed support. You defended interns who made mistakes.””

A small smile crossed his face.

“You were the worst person in the world at pretending to be a spy.””

Despite everything, a tiny laugh escaped me.

The first one all night.

Then Andrew spoke.

“You’re both lying.””

Everyone turned.

His calm mask was breaking.

“This is a performance.””

Ethan looked at him.

“No.””

Andrew stepped forward.

“You think this changes anything?””

His voice rose.

“You think people will forget she lied?””

Nobody answered.

Because Andrew wanted doubt.

He needed doubt.

But Ethan walked toward him.

Slowly.

“You’re right about one thing.””

Andrew smiled.

“What?””

“She did lie.””

My heart dropped.

Then Ethan continued.

“But she lied because she was surviving.””

The smile disappeared from Andrew’s face.

“And you lied because you were controlling.””

The silence was absolute.

Ethan turned to the security team arriving at the end of the hallway.

“Take him downstairs.””

Andrew laughed.

“You think this is over?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Andrew looked at me.

“You still don’t know everything.””

A chill went through me.

“What?””

Andrew smiled.

The old confidence returned.

“Ask Ethan why he really kept investigating me.””

I looked at Ethan.

And I saw it.

The hesitation.

Just for a second.

But it was there.

Andrew noticed too.

“That’s right.””

He stepped back as security approached.

“He didn’t tell you because the truth is worse than anything I did.””

My heart started racing.

“Ethan?””

He looked at me.

And before he could answer, Andrew said:

“The billionaire you fell in love with wasn’t just investigating me.””

May you like

A pause.

“He was investigating you.””
