Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Smile

I knew fear.

I knew the kind that lived quietly inside my chest and waited for the right moment to wake up.

But I had never known the kind of fear that came from seeing the person you were running from standing only a few feet away.

The door to the dressing suite remained closed.

Yet somehow, I could already feel him on the other side.

Andrew.

My fiancé.

The man who had kissed my forehead in front of cameras that morning.

The man who had held my hand during hospital charity events and told reporters that I was “the woman who made him a better person.””

The man everyone believed was gentle.

The man Ethan Carter had just discovered was a monster.

Ethan stared at his phone for another few seconds before placing it on the table.

His movements were controlled.

Too controlled.

I had worked beside him for almost a year. I knew his habits better than most people. I knew when he was stressed, when he was angry, when he was preparing to make a difficult decision.

And right now, he was doing all three.

“Why is he on this floor?”” Ethan asked.

I looked away.

“I don’t know.””

“Emma.””

The way he said my name made my throat tighten.

Not like Andrew said it.

Andrew always said my name like he owned it.

Like it belonged to him.

Ethan said it like it mattered.

“I said I don’t know,” I repeated.

He studied my face.

Then his eyes dropped briefly to the bruises again.

His expression changed.

A flash of pain crossed it.

“Did he do this tonight?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“When?””

I hesitated.

That hesitation answered him.

Ethan took a slow breath.

“How long has this been happening?””

The room felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

I looked at the mirror beside me.

At the woman staring back.

For months, I had convinced myself that if I kept everything hidden, I could protect everyone.

My coworkers.

My family.

Andrew’s reputation.

Even Ethan.

Especially Ethan.

Because Ethan Carter had become the one bright part of my life that I wasn’t allowed to touch.

When I first started working for him, I thought he would be exactly like every billionaire I had read about.

Cold.

Arrogant.

Impossible to impress.

Instead, he remembered the names of every employee in his building.

He stayed late to help interns prepare presentations.

He once spent an entire weekend fixing a mistake made by a junior assistant because he refused to let someone’s career suffer for one error.

He was powerful.

But he never used that power to make people feel small.

That was what made it dangerous.

Because little by little, I had started seeing the man behind the headlines.

And little by little, I had fallen in love with him.

Quietly.

Carefully.

Hopelessly.

While planning a wedding with someone else.

“I should leave,” I whispered.

Ethan frowned.

“What?””

“I should go downstairs.””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

I looked at him.

“Ethan—”

“No.””

His voice was calm, but there was no room for negotiation.

“You are not walking back into that ballroom and standing next to him.””

My heart started racing.

“You don’t understand how complicated this is.””

“I understand enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

I stepped away from the mirror.

“You don’t know Andrew.””

“I know he hurt you.””

“That’s not enough.””

The words came out sharper than I intended.

Ethan went quiet.

I regretted it immediately.

But I couldn’t stop.

“Do you know what happens if you accuse someone like Andrew Vaughn?”” I asked.

His jaw tightened.

“You tell the truth.””

I shook my head.

“You lose.””

The room fell silent.

“Andrew has spent fifteen years building his reputation,” I continued.

“Hospitals trust him. Patients love him. The media calls him a miracle worker. Everyone wants to believe he’s exactly who he pretends to be.””

Ethan watched me carefully.

“And you think that means you should stay?””

I looked down.

“I think it means nobody will believe me.””

“Emma.””

“I’m serious.””

My voice lowered.

“People don’t want to believe heroes can be cruel.””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Because he knew I was right about one thing.

Reputation mattered.

Especially in New York.

Especially tonight.

The entire city was about to celebrate Andrew Vaughn.

The ballroom below was filled with people who had donated millions because they believed in him.

And in less than fifteen minutes, his name would be spoken on stage.

Applause would fill the room.

Cameras would flash.

And he would smile.

The same smile he wore every time he hurt me.

A soft knock came from the door.

My entire body froze.

Ethan noticed.

“Emma.””

I didn’t respond.

Another knock.

Then Andrew’s voice.

“Emma?””

The sound of it made my skin crawl.

Not because he sounded angry.

That was the worst part.

He sounded normal.

Warm.

Concerned.

Like the perfect fiancé everyone knew.

“Emma, are you in there?””

I looked at Ethan.

Panic took over.

“Please.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Please what?””

“Don’t open the door.””

A muscle moved in his jaw.

Then Andrew knocked again.

“Emma, sweetheart? The coordinator said you were changing. We’re supposed to take photos before the ceremony.””

Sweetheart.

The word almost made me sick.

Ethan walked toward the door.

I grabbed his arm.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

My hand was wrapped around his sleeve.

The realization hit me at the same moment it hit him.

I was touching him.

The man I had spent months trying not to touch.

For one second, neither of us moved.

Then I pulled away.

“I’m sorry.””

Ethan looked at my hand.

Then back at me.

“You don’t have to apologize for being afraid.””

The kindness almost broke me.

Almost.

The door handle moved.

Someone outside was trying to open it.

Ethan stepped between me and the door.

“Stay behind me.””

My heart pounded.

“Ethan, no.””

But he was already reaching for the handle.

Before he could open it, his phone buzzed again.

He glanced down.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more.

“Ethan.””

He turned the phone toward me.

It was a message from Carter Tower security.

*Subject: Unauthorized Access Report*

*Camera footage confirms Dr. Andrew Vaughn entered the private executive dressing area at 7:09 p.m.*

My stomach dropped.

Seven minutes before Ethan walked in.

Seven minutes before he saw me.

Seven minutes before my secret stopped being mine.

But there was another line underneath.

A note from security.

*Dr. Vaughn was not searching for event preparation materials. He accessed a restricted locker assigned to Carter Foundation executives.*

Ethan looked at me.

“Why would Andrew break into a restricted locker?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

But something cold moved through me.

Because I did know.

I knew Andrew.

I knew how he reacted when he felt like he was losing control.

And I knew he never did anything without a reason.

The door opened slightly.

A hand appeared around the edge.

Andrew’s voice became softer.

“Emma?””

Ethan moved instantly.

He closed the gap and pushed the door shut before Andrew could enter.

For the first time, I saw genuine fear on Ethan’s face.

Not fear for himself.

Fear for me.

“Ethan Carter,” Andrew said from the hallway.

His voice changed.

The warmth disappeared.

“You’re in my fiancée’s dressing room.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Andrew laughed quietly.

A sound that made my blood run cold.

“Interesting.””

Ethan stared at the door.

“What are you doing here, Andrew?””

A pause.

Then:

“I was about to ask you the same thing.””

Silence.

Andrew continued.

“Unless, of course…”

His voice lowered.

“Emma has finally decided to tell someone.””

I stopped breathing.

Ethan looked at me.

And in that moment, I knew.

Andrew wasn’t confused.

He wasn’t surprised.

He knew exactly why Ethan was here.

The door handle moved again.

And Andrew whispered the words that turned my fear into something worse.

“Open the door, Emma.””

A pause.

May you like

Then his voice became almost gentle.

“Before I tell Ethan what you’ve been hiding from him for the past eleven months.””
