Chapter 3: The Secret He Used Against Me
The most terrifying thing about Andrew Vaughn was never his anger.
It was his patience.
I had learned that during the first month after we started dating.
Everyone else saw the charming surgeon who remembered birthdays, donated anonymously to children’s hospitals, and stayed after long surgeries to comfort families.
I saw the man who could smile while saying something cruel.
The man who could apologize with tears in his eyes and then repeat the same behavior days later.
The man who knew exactly how to make me question myself.
And now he was standing outside the door, calm and confident, because he believed he still had control.
“Open the door, Emma.””
His voice was gentle.
Too gentle.
I felt my fingers go cold.
Ethan noticed immediately.
He looked at me, then at the door.
“What does he mean?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because there was a part of me that was still trapped in the old version of my life.
The version where I protected Andrew.
The version where I told myself things could get better.
The version where I believed the man everyone admired was the man I had fallen in love with.
But that version of me was exhausted.
She had been exhausted for months.
“Emma,” Ethan said quietly.
I looked at him.
“He knows.””
The words barely came out.
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“Knows what?””
I swallowed.
“That I was going to leave.””
A heavy silence filled the room.
Outside, Andrew laughed softly.
“Emma? I know you’re in there.””
Ethan stepped closer to the door.
“You’re not opening it.””
It wasn’t a question.
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Good.””
My eyes moved to him.
“Good?””
“Yes.””
The certainty in his voice surprised me.
“Because for the first time tonight, you’re not doing what he wants.””
The words hit harder than they should have.
Because he was right.
For months, every decision I made had been shaped around Andrew.
What would upset him.
What would calm him.
What would make him less likely to explode.
I had forgotten what it felt like to choose something for myself.
A knock came again.
This time harder.
“Emma.””
Andrew’s voice changed.
The softness disappeared.
“You’re making this difficult.””
I flinched.
Ethan heard it.
And something inside him shifted.
His face became unreadable.
“What happened before?””
I looked away.
“Not now.””
“Yes. Now.””
“Ethan—”
“No.””
His voice remained low.
Controlled.
But there was something underneath it.
A promise.
“I need to know what I’m dealing with.””
I closed my eyes.
The memories came back before I could stop them.
A broken glass on the kitchen floor.
Andrew standing over me.
His apology the next morning.
The flowers.
The expensive necklace.
The promise.
“I was stressed.””
“You know I love you.””
“I would never hurt you.””
The cycle.
Always the same.
“I met Andrew two years ago,” I whispered.
Ethan stayed silent.
“He was kind.””
The words felt strange now.
Like I was describing someone who no longer existed.
“He was working at St. Vincent Medical Center. He saved a little girl during an emergency surgery.
The news called him a hero. I saw the interview and thought…”
I stopped.
“What?””
I looked at Ethan.
“I thought someone like that couldn’t possibly be cruel.””
The sadness in his eyes almost made me stop talking.
But I continued.
“At first, he was perfect. He remembered everything about me. My favorite food.
My mother’s birthday. The books I liked. He made me feel like I was the only person in the world.””
My voice became quieter.
“Then things changed.””
“How?””
I stared at the floor.
“Small things.””
“Small?””
“He started deciding what I should wear. Who I should spend time with. How late I could stay at work.””
Ethan’s expression tightened.
“And you stayed.””
I looked up.
There was no judgment in his voice.
Only pain.
“I thought it was temporary.””
A bitter smile crossed my face.
“I thought if I loved him enough, he would become the person he used to be.””
Another knock interrupted us.
Andrew spoke again.
“I know you’re scared, Emma.””
My blood froze.
Ethan looked at the door.
“He’s manipulating you.””
“I know.””
The words surprised me.
Because for the first time, I actually meant them.
I knew.
I knew exactly what he was doing.
Andrew continued.
“You don’t want to ruin everything tonight.””
I looked at Ethan.
He looked back at me.
Because that was the truth.
That was the weapon Andrew always used.
Fear of consequences.
Fear of embarrassment.
Fear of destroying something bigger than myself.
“You think people will believe you?”” Andrew asked through the door.
My chest tightened.
“He’s starting already,” Ethan said.
Andrew continued.
“The hospital. The foundation. Your friends. Your family.””
Each word felt like a knife.
“You know what happens if you accuse me, Emma.””
I covered my mouth.
Ethan moved closer.
“Don’t listen.””
But I couldn’t stop.
Because I had heard these words before.
So many times.
“You’ll be the woman who tried to destroy a respected doctor because your relationship failed.””
My eyes burned.
“You’ll lose everything.””
Ethan looked at me.
Then he reached for the door.
I grabbed his wrist.
“No.””
He stopped.
“Why?””
“Because he wants you angry.””
Ethan looked surprised.
I lowered my voice.
“He wants you to open that door. He wants a scene. He wants witnesses.””
A slow understanding crossed Ethan’s face.
“He’s prepared.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
The phone in Ethan’s hand buzzed.
He checked it.
Another security message.
His face changed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What happened?””
He showed me the screen.
A security image loaded.
A photo from the hallway camera.
Andrew standing outside the dressing suite.
But he wasn’t alone.
Behind him were three people.
A journalist.
A photographer.
And the event coordinator.
My stomach dropped.
“He brought cameras.””
Ethan’s eyes turned cold.
“He planned this.””
The realization hit me.
Andrew wasn’t just trying to intimidate me.
He wanted to control the story.
If Ethan opened the door angry, Andrew would become the victim.
A billionaire attacking a respected doctor.
A jealous accusation.
A misunderstanding.
Andrew knew how to play the world.
He had spent years practicing.
The door opened slightly again.
This time Andrew didn’t knock.
He pushed against it.
But Ethan held it firmly.
“Andrew.””
The billionaire’s voice was calm.
Almost frighteningly calm.
“Move away from the door.””
Andrew laughed.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“I’ve known Emma for two years.””
A pause.
“And you for almost one.””
His voice became sharper.
“Do you really think you know her?””
I felt Ethan stiffen.
Andrew continued.
“You don’t know what she’s capable of.””
My heart sank.
Because that was Andrew’s favorite trick.
Turn the victim into the villain.
Make everyone question the person speaking.
Ethan looked at me.
Not the door.
Me.
And that was the moment something inside me broke.
Because I realized he believed me.
Even without evidence.
Even without witnesses.
He believed me.
“Emma,” Ethan said softly.
I looked at him.
“Do you have proof?””
The question should have scared me.
Instead, it gave me something I hadn’t had in months.
A choice.
I reached into my purse with trembling hands.
My fingers touched my phone.
Then a small hidden folder I had created three months ago.
A folder I never thought I would show anyone.
Because showing it meant admitting the truth.
I unlocked my phone.
Ethan saw my expression change.
“What is it?””
I looked at the door.
At Andrew.
At the man who thought he had buried every piece of evidence.
Then I whispered:
“I saved everything.””
Ethan’s eyes widened.
“Everything?””
I nodded.
“Every message. Every apology. Every threat.””
Outside, Andrew suddenly stopped speaking.
Like he had heard something.
Like he understood.
Then his voice changed completely.
“Emma.””
A chill went through me.
Because this time, he wasn’t pretending.
“You wouldn’t.””
I stared at the door.
The mask had finally slipped.
And Ethan saw it too.
The hallway became silent.
Then Andrew said something that made my blood turn cold.
Something I never expected him to admit.
“Because if you show him those recordings…”
May you like
A pause.
“…he’ll find out why you really became his assistant in the first place.””
