Chapter 6: The Truth I Was Too Afraid to Say
The recording continued playing.
My own voice.
My own fear.
My own secret.
Echoing through the hallway where everyone had gathered to celebrate a man who had spent years pretending to be a hero.
“I applied because I was looking for a way to escape you.””
The sentence hung in the air.
Nobody moved.
Not the photographer.
Not the event coordinator.
Not Richard Hale.
Not even Andrew.
Because for the first time that night, his plan wasn’t going exactly how he expected.
He wanted the recording to make me look guilty.
He wanted Ethan to believe I had manipulated him.
He wanted everyone to see me as someone who had hidden the truth.
And maybe, months ago, it would have worked.
Maybe I would have broken.
Maybe I would have apologized.
Maybe I would have begged everyone to understand.
But something had changed.
I was tired of being afraid.
Ethan stared at the phone in Andrew’s hand.
Then he looked at me.
Not with anger.
Not with betrayal.
With a question.
A silent question.
Why didn’t you tell me?
My chest tightened.
“I can explain.””
My voice was barely audible.
Andrew smiled.
“There it is.””
He turned slightly toward the people watching.
“The explanation.””
His tone was full of false sadness.
“She always has one.””
I looked at him.
And for the first time, I saw what everyone else never saw.
Not a monster.
Not a villain from a movie.
Something much more dangerous.
A man who genuinely believed he was entitled to control every version of the story.
“You recorded me,” I said.
Andrew tilted his head.
“Of course.””
The answer was so casual it made my stomach twist.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He smiled.
“Because I know you.””
A chill ran through me.
“No.””
His smile faded slightly.
“I know exactly what you do when you’re scared.””
The hallway became silent.
“You hide.””
Those words hurt because they were true.
I had hidden.
I hid the bruises.
I hid the fear.
I hid the truth from Ethan.
But Andrew forgot one important thing.
I wasn’t hiding anymore.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Give me the phone.””
Andrew looked at him.
“No.””
“Then I’ll get a court order.””
Andrew laughed.
“Already threatening legal action?””
His eyes moved toward the cameras.
“Interesting choice at a charity event.””
Ethan didn’t react.
“You’re confusing restraint with weakness.””
For the first time, Andrew’s confidence slipped.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Because I knew him.
And Ethan saw it too.
The billionaire turned to me.
“Emma.””
I looked at him.
“Tell me everything.””
The hallway disappeared.
The cameras disappeared.
Andrew disappeared.
Only Ethan remained.
And suddenly, I realized something.
He wasn’t asking because he doubted me.
He was asking because he wanted me to take my story back.
So I did.
“I met Andrew two years ago.””
My voice shook.
“But I didn’t know who he really was.””
Andrew’s expression changed.
“Emma.””
I ignored him.
“I knew him as the doctor everyone loved.””
I looked at the people around us.
“The man who saved lives. The man who donated money. The man who made families feel hopeful.””
My eyes returned to Ethan.
“I thought I was lucky.””
Andrew crossed his arms.
“This is ridiculous.””
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
It was stronger.
“This is the first honest conversation I’ve had in months.””
The hallway went still.
I continued.
“When things started changing, I kept making excuses.””
I swallowed.
“I told myself he was stressed. I told myself work was difficult. I told myself every relationship had problems.””
Andrew’s jaw tightened.
“But then the problems became rules.””
I looked down.
“He wanted to know where I was every second. Who I spoke to. What I wore. Why I stayed late at work.””
Ethan’s expression darkened.
“And when you tried to leave?””
The question was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
I looked at him.
“He apologized.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“He always apologized.””
The memory hurt.
“The flowers. The gifts. The promises.””
I shook my head.
“But nothing changed.””
Andrew stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Ethan immediately moved between us.
“Stay where you are.””
Andrew stared at him.
“You’re protecting someone who lied to you.””
Ethan didn’t look away.
“She lied because she was afraid.””
The words hit me.
Because they were exactly what I needed someone to understand.
Andrew laughed.
“You don’t know her.””
Ethan’s voice was calm.
“I know enough.””
The tension in the hallway became unbearable.
Then Richard Hale cleared his throat.
Everyone turned.
“I think this conversation should happen privately.””
Ethan looked at him.
“No.””
Richard hesitated.
“This is a personal matter.””
“No.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“This stopped being personal when you brought confidential foundation documents into a private dressing area.””
Richard’s face went pale.
Andrew immediately looked at him.
A warning.
A silent command.
But Richard looked away.
And that was when I realized something.
Andrew was losing control.
Not because of me.
Because the people around him were beginning to doubt him.
The event coordinator approached slowly.
“Mr. Carter…”
Ethan looked at him.
“Yes?””
“Should we delay the award ceremony?””
Andrew immediately turned.
“No.””
His voice was sharp.
Everyone noticed.
Then he recovered.
“No. There is no reason to.””
Ethan watched him carefully.
“You’re still planning to go on stage?””
Andrew smiled.
“Of course.””
The confidence returned.
“The city is waiting.””
He looked at me.
“And they deserve the truth.””
My stomach tightened.
“What truth?””
Andrew looked at Ethan.
“The truth about why Emma became your assistant.””
Ethan’s face hardened.
“You already played the recording.””
Andrew shook his head.
“That was only the beginning.””
My heart stopped.
Because I knew that tone.
He had another weapon.
Another secret.
Another way to hurt me.
Andrew reached into his jacket again.
This time, he pulled out a small envelope.
He held it between two fingers.
“I kept this because I knew one day you would betray me.””
I stared at the envelope.
“What is that?””
Andrew smiled.
“Something you wrote.””
My blood ran cold.
Ethan looked at me.
“Emma?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because I knew.
The letter.
The one I wrote months ago.
The one I never sent.
The one where I admitted everything.
My feelings.
My fears.
My plan to leave Andrew.
And the one name I had never dared say out loud.
Ethan.
Andrew held the envelope up.
“Inside this letter, Emma explains exactly why she wanted to work for you.””
He paused.
“Because she was already in love with you.””
The hallway exploded into whispers.
The photographer raised his camera.
My face burned.
Not because I was ashamed of loving Ethan.
But because Andrew had taken something private and turned it into a weapon.
I looked at Ethan.
His expression was impossible to read.
“Emma.””
I couldn’t speak.
Andrew smiled.
“Go ahead.””
He handed the envelope to Ethan.
“Read it.””
Ethan didn’t take it immediately.
He looked at me first.
And in that moment, I realized something terrifying.
The truth I had been most afraid to reveal wasn’t the bruises.
It wasn’t Andrew.
It wasn’t the recordings.
It was this.
That before Ethan ever knew my name…
I had already loved him.
Ethan slowly reached for the envelope.
Andrew watched closely.
Waiting.
Waiting for the moment he believed everything would fall apart.
Ethan opened it.
His eyes moved across the first line.
Then his expression changed.
Not anger.
Not disgust.
Something else.
Something that made Andrew’s smile disappear.
Because whatever Ethan had just read…
It wasn’t the confession Andrew expected.
Ethan looked up.
Straight at Andrew.
And said:
“This letter proves you’ve been lying to everyone.””
Andrew froze.
“What?””
Ethan held the page tightly.
“Because this letter was written before Emma ever became my assistant.””
A silence fell.
Then Ethan continued:
“And it proves something you never considered.””
He looked at me.
Then back at Andrew.
“You didn’t send her to me.””
A pause.
“She was already trying to escape you.””
Andrew’s face changed.
May you like
For the first time that night…
He looked afraid.
