Chapter 4: The Daughter I Was Told I Lost

The anniversary party ended before anyone finished dessert.

People left quietly.

No one knew what to say.

My marriage had collapsed.

My sister’s lie had collapsed.

But something much older had just opened.

Something buried for twelve years.

I sat in my house at three in the morning with the documents spread across the kitchen table.

The same kitchen where Daniel and I had once planned our future.

The same kitchen where I had cried after losing my baby.

The same kitchen where Clara had held my hand and told me:

“I’m here for you.””

I remembered that day.

The hospital room.

The white walls.

The silence after the doctor walked away.

“They’re sorry,” the nurse had said.

“They did everything they could.””

I believed them.

I had no reason not to.

Until now.

Marcus sat across from me.

“I know this is difficult.””

I looked at the papers.

“Tell me what happened.””

He took a breath.

“The records show inconsistencies.””

“What kind?””

“Your baby was listed as deceased.””

My hands tightened.

“But?””

“But there are no matching burial records.””

The room went silent.

I looked up.

“What are you saying?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“I’m saying someone may have lied to you.””

My entire body went cold.

The next morning, I confronted my mother.

She opened the door and immediately knew.

She saw my face.

She saw the folder.

“Emma…”

“Did you know?””

She started crying.

That was all the answer I needed.

“Mom.””

She stepped back.

“I thought it was for the best.””

“For the best?””

My voice shook.

“For twelve years, I mourned my child.””

She covered her mouth.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She looked toward the living room.

And whispered:

“Your father.””

I froze.

My father had died six years earlier.

But apparently, his secrets had not.

“What does Dad have to do with this?””

My mother sat down.

“I don’t know everything.””

“Then tell me what you know.””

She looked broken.

“The hospital called me that night.””

“And?””

“They said there was a problem.””

“What problem?””

She hesitated.

“Your sister was there.””

My heart stopped.

“Clara?””

My mother nodded.

“She came to the hospital before anyone knew what happened.””

“Why?””

“I never understood.””

I stood.

“Where is Clara?””

Because suddenly, I didn’t need answers from my mother.

I needed them from the person who had spent twelve years hiding them.

When I found Clara, she was sitting alone in her apartment.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

“Emma.””

I closed the door behind me.

“No lies.””

She looked down.

“Okay.””

“Did my baby survive?””

Her face collapsed.

And I knew.

I knew before she spoke.

“Yes.””

The room spun.

My voice became a whisper.

“Where is she?””

Clara started crying.

“I didn’t mean for this to happen.””

“Where is my daughter?””

She covered her face.

“She’s alive.””

Every breath disappeared.

“Where?””

Clara looked at me.

May you like

And said the name of a city I had never expected.

“She’s been living with someone you know.””
