Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Pregnancy
The laboratory report changed everything.
Not because it proved Daniel had betrayed me.
I already knew that.
It changed everything because Clara had built her entire victory on a lie.
The report showed that the paternity test she had secretly taken was not what she claimed.
The baby was not Daniel’s.
The room erupted.
Everyone started talking at once.
“What does that mean?””
“Is this true?””
“Clara, explain!””
She looked around desperately.
For the first time in my life, I saw my sister with nowhere to hide.
Daniel looked at me.
“You knew?””
I nodded.
“I found out last month.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
I stared at him.
“Because I wanted to know why.””
His eyebrows tightened.
“Why what?””
“Why you were both willing to destroy me.””
Clara dropped the microphone.
“No.””
She backed away.
“No, you don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at me.
Her eyes filled with anger.
“You always had everything.””
I almost didn’t understand.
“What?””
“You had the perfect marriage. The perfect house. The perfect life.””
I stared at her.
“You think my life was perfect because I smiled?””
She looked away.
Daniel suddenly said:
“Clara, stop.””
That was when I knew.
He wasn’t protecting me.
He wasn’t protecting our marriage.
He was protecting himself.
I walked toward him.
“Tell me something.””
He looked nervous.
“Did you know?””
Silence.
That was his answer.
My heart broke in a way I didn’t expect.
Not because he cheated.
I had already survived that.
Because he knew.
He knew he might not even be the father.
And he still let my sister stand there and humiliate me.
“I asked you a question, Daniel.””
He swallowed.
“I wasn’t sure.””
The room went quiet again.
“You weren’t sure?””
“I thought…”
“You thought what?””
He looked down.
That was the first honest thing he had done in months.
“I thought maybe it was mine.””
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because sometimes pain is so deep it becomes impossible to cry.
Marcus closed the folder.
“Emma, there’s something else.””
I turned.
“What?””
He hesitated.
“I found something while investigating Clara.””
My sister immediately looked terrified.
“What did you find?””
Marcus looked at her.
“A connection from years ago.””
The air changed.
“What connection?”” I asked.
He opened another file.
“I think you need to see this privately.””
“No.””
I looked around the room.
“Tonight has already been public.””
I took the papers.
And I read the first page.
The date.
The hospital name.
The patient information.
My hands went numb.
Because twelve years earlier, I had lost a baby.
A baby I was told had never survived.
A baby I spent years grieving.
A baby I thought I would never hold.
But the document in my hand suggested something impossible.
My child’s records had been changed.
And Clara’s name appeared where it should never have been.
I looked at my sister.
She was crying.
Not from guilt.
From fear.
“Clara,” I whispered.
She shook her head.
“Don’t.””
“What did you do twelve years ago?””
May you like
She closed her eyes.
And for the first time, she looked like someone who knew the truth was finally catching up.
