Chapter 2: The Folder on the Cake Table

The silence after Clara’s confession felt heavier than any scream.

Three hundred people watched me.

Some looked horrified.

Some looked curious.

Some looked uncomfortable, like they wanted to leave but couldn’t stop watching.

Clara held the microphone tightly.

She expected chaos.

She wanted chaos.

I could see it in her eyes.

She wanted me broken.

“Say something,” she whispered.

The microphone was still close enough that several people heard her.

I walked toward her slowly.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emma, please.””

I looked at him.

“Please what?””

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Because there was no explanation that could survive the truth.

Clara tilted her head.

“You’re not going to pretend you don’t understand?””

I stared at her.

“My sister,” I said quietly, “you just announced you’re having my husband’s child at my anniversary party.””

Her expression hardened.

“I didn’t want to hurt you.””

A few guests exchanged looks.

I almost laughed.

Almost.

“Then why did you choose a microphone?””

Her face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

The guilt.

Then it disappeared.

“You don’t know what happened between us.””

“No,” I said.

“I know exactly what happened.””

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Can we talk privately?””

I pulled away.

“After four months, you finally want privacy?””

The room went completely still.

Clara looked confused.

Daniel looked terrified.

“You knew?”” he whispered.

I smiled.

“Yes.””

That single word destroyed their confidence.

Clara lowered the microphone.

“What?””

“I knew.””

Her face turned pale.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped back.

“How long?””

“Four months.””

My mother started crying.

“Emma…”

I looked at her.

“I didn’t want tonight to become a fight.””

Clara laughed nervously.

“So you planned this?””

“No.””

I looked at Marcus.

“I prepared.””

Marcus stood.

Every eye followed him.

He walked across the ballroom carrying the folder.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What is that?””

Marcus stopped beside me.

“Evidence.””

Clara shook her head.

“This is insane.””

Marcus opened the folder.

“Hotel records. Photographs. Messages. Financial records.””

Daniel whispered:

“Emma, don’t do this.””

I looked at him.

“Do what?””

“Destroy everything.””

I felt something inside me go cold.

“Daniel, you destroyed everything when you decided I was too foolish to notice.””

Marcus placed several documents on the table beside the anniversary cake.

The irony was almost cruel.

A beautiful cake.

A celebration of ten years.

Sitting beside proof of betrayal.

Clara looked at the papers.

“You hired someone?””

“Yes.””

“Because you thought I was sleeping with your husband?””

“No.””

I paused.

“Because I knew.””

Her hands started shaking.

Then she saw the final document.

The one I had been waiting for.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Her expression changed.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked over.

“Clara?””

She didn’t answer.

She just stared.

I took the microphone.

“Before you tell everyone you won, you should read the report.””

Clara looked at me.

For the first time that night, she looked afraid.

She whispered:

“What did you do?””

I smiled sadly.

“I found the truth.””

She looked back at the paper.

And then the room heard her whisper:

“This isn’t possible.””

May you like

Because the pregnancy she had announced so proudly was not the only secret she had been hiding.

And she had no idea I had discovered the one thing she feared most.
