Chapter 7: The Message That Made Jessica Tremble

Jessica spent the entire drive home staring out the window.

David drove in silence, his attention fixed on the road ahead.

Jasmine sat in the back seat, replaying everything that had happened at the lawyer's office.

She couldn't stop thinking about Jessica's reaction when her father asked whether anyone else had helped prepare the property transfer.

It had been brief.

A tightening of her hands.

A glance toward the office door.

A hesitation that seemed to last forever.

But Jasmine had noticed.

And she suspected David had noticed too.

When they arrived home, David placed his keys on the table and turned toward his wife.

“Now we're going to finish that conversation.””

Jessica set down her purse.

“David, I'm exhausted. We can discuss this tomorrow.””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“We've spent enough time discussing what you intended to do. I want to know exactly what happened.””

Jessica looked toward Jasmine.

“Can we speak without an audience?””

David shook his head.

“Not when the decision you're explaining was made at Jasmine's expense.””

Jasmine remained near the doorway.

She didn't want another argument, but she wasn't willing to leave simply because Jessica felt uncomfortable answering questions.

For once, she wanted to hear the truth herself.

Jessica took a seat.

“Fine. Ask whatever you want.””

David sat opposite her.

“Did anyone help you prepare the documents submitted to the lawyer?””

Jessica pressed her lips together.

“I told you I handled the matter.””

“That wasn't my question.””

“I discussed my concerns with people.””

“What people?””

Jessica's expression hardened.

“Why does that matter?””

“Because I need to know whether this was a decision you made independently or whether someone encouraged you to take action you weren't authorized to take.””

Jessica looked down at her hands.

“I wanted my son to have a secure future. I spoke to people about how to arrange that.””

David waited.

She didn't continue.

“Did someone tell you that you could remove Jasmine from the property without consulting me?””

“No one forced me to do anything.””

“That still doesn't answer the question.””

Jessica stood abruptly.

“Why are you interrogating me as if I'm your enemy?””

David remained seated.

“I'm asking you questions because you secretly changed an important family arrangement and then admitted you expected me to disagree.””

Jessica's eyes flashed.

“I was trying to protect my child!””

“And I am trying to protect mine.””

The words silenced her.

David rose slowly.

“Your son matters. Jasmine matters. But you don't get to decide that one child must be pushed aside so the other can feel secure.””

Jessica looked at Jasmine.

For a moment, Jasmine thought her stepmother might finally acknowledge the pain she had caused.

Instead, Jessica turned away.

“I need some time alone.””

She picked up her purse and walked toward the staircase.

David watched her leave.

He didn't follow her.

He had learned something important that afternoon: every time he asked a direct question, Jessica returned to her intentions instead of explaining her actions.

He wasn't going to let the investigation become another argument in which the central issue disappeared.

“Jasmine,” he said gently, “come sit down.””

She joined him on the sofa.

“Dad, do you think she's hiding something?””

David considered his answer.

“I think there are questions she hasn't answered.””

“Do you think someone helped her?””

“I won't accuse anyone without evidence. We'll let the documents tell us what happened.””

Jasmine nodded.

She appreciated his caution, but the uncertainty was difficult to bear.

“What if the property really is in her son's name?””

“Then we'll find out what rights exist and what legal options are available.””

He looked directly at her.

“We won't solve this by guessing, and we won't let anyone pressure us into accepting something before the facts are clear.””

Jasmine rested her head against the back of the sofa.

“I'm scared that everything will change.””

David's expression softened.

“I can't promise that this won't affect the family. It already has. But I can promise you that you won't be left to deal with it alone.””

She reached for his hand.

For the first time in two days, she felt she could breathe a little more easily.

Upstairs, Jessica closed her bedroom door.

She stood motionless for several seconds before taking out her phone.

There were two missed calls and a message from her son.

She opened the message.

“Mom, Dad said he's reviewing the property documents. What should I tell him if he asks me about the transfer?””

Jessica's stomach tightened.

She typed a response, deleted it, and tried again.

“Don't say anything until I've spoken to you.””

She stared at the words before sending them.

Then she sat on the edge of the bed.

She had told herself that the transfer was a practical decision.

She had convinced herself that David would eventually understand her reasoning.

She had even believed that Jasmine would accept the arrangement once she realized that Jessica was thinking about the family's future.

But now David had involved the lawyer.

The records were being reviewed.

And questions were being asked that Jessica could no longer answer with vague explanations about protecting her son.

Her phone vibrated again.

This time, the message came from the lawyer's office.

The office had requested additional information to verify the authority supporting the proposed transfer.

Jessica read the message twice.

Her hands began to tremble.

She had hoped the matter would be completed quietly.

Instead, every step was being examined.

She typed a reply asking what additional information was required.

The answer came shortly afterward.

The office needed to confirm the relevant ownership records and establish whether the necessary authorization had been provided.

Jessica closed her eyes.

She knew what the lawyer was asking.

And she knew that she couldn't simply make the questions disappear.

Downstairs, David received a separate message from the same office.

The lawyer confirmed that the review was underway and that further documentation would be provided when available.

David read the message and placed his phone on the table.

He didn't feel victorious.

He felt disappointed.

He had trusted Jessica to act in good faith.

He had believed that whatever disagreements they had about their children's futures, they would discuss them honestly.

Now he was wondering how long she had been planning the transfer and why she had been so certain she could carry it out without his knowledge.

Jasmine noticed his expression.

“Another message?””

“Yes. The lawyer is checking the records.””

“Did he find anything?””

“Nothing conclusive yet.””

She nodded.

Then she hesitated.

“Dad, if Jessica apologizes, will you forgive her?””

David looked at his daughter.

“An apology would matter. But an apology doesn't automatically answer every question or repair every consequence.””

Jasmine absorbed his words.

“I don't want our family to fall apart.””

“Neither do I.””

He paused.

“But keeping a family together cannot mean pretending that serious things never happened.””

Jasmine looked toward the staircase.

She wondered whether Jessica understood that.

She wondered whether her stepmother regretted hurting her or merely regretted being caught.

And she wondered what her stepbrother had been told.

A few minutes later, Jessica came downstairs.

Her face had been carefully composed, but her eyes betrayed her anxiety.

“David, I need to speak to you.””

He turned toward her.

“I'm listening.””

She glanced at Jasmine.

Then she took a breath.

“I know you don't trust me right now.””

David didn't respond.

“I made a mistake by not discussing the transfer with you first.””

Jasmine sat very still.

It sounded like an apology.

But Jessica continued before either of them could answer.

“I was afraid that if I waited, my son would lose his opportunity to have something of his own.””

David's expression hardened slightly.

“You still haven't explained why you believed your daughter had to lose something for your son to gain it.””

Jessica looked down.

“I thought there wasn't another way.””

“Did you ask me?””

“No.””

“Did you ask Jasmine?””

“No.””

“Then how do you know there wasn't another way?””

Jessica had no answer.

David shook his head.

“You made a decision first and searched for reasons to justify it afterward.””

Jessica's eyes filled with tears.

“I never wanted to hurt Jasmine.””

Jasmine finally spoke.

“But you knew I would be affected.””

Jessica turned toward her.

“I didn't think you would take it this badly.””

Jasmine stared at her stepmother.

“How was I supposed to feel? I received a document telling me I was being removed from our family property. Nobody had even spoken to me.””

Jessica lowered her eyes.

“I understand that now.””

“Do you?””

Jasmine's voice was quiet.

“Because if you really understood, you would stop explaining why you did it and start acknowledging what you did to me.””

For a long moment, Jessica said nothing.

David watched the exchange without interrupting.

Then his phone rang.

The lawyer's name appeared on the screen.

David answered immediately.

“Hello?””

He listened carefully.

His expression changed as the lawyer explained the next stage of the review.

When the call ended, he looked at Jessica.

“The lawyer needs to verify the original authorization and the ownership records before he can advise us further.””

Jessica swallowed.

“Is that all?””

“For now.””

David picked up the phone and placed it in his pocket.

“Tomorrow, we'll review whatever additional documents are available. Until then, nobody is going to claim that this property belongs to someone simply because a transfer was requested.””

Jessica nodded stiffly.

She had no choice but to agree.

But as she returned upstairs, she understood that the situation was no longer under her control.

David was asking questions.

The lawyer was checking the records.

And her son was beginning to realize that the arrangement his mother had promised him might not be as secure as she had claimed.

May you like

For the first time, Jessica feared not merely losing the property arrangement she had attempted to create.

She feared that the truth about how she had created it would change the way her entire family saw her.
