Chapter 3: David's Warning
“I'm calling about a property transfer that was made without my authorization.””
David's voice was controlled, but the anger beneath it was unmistakable.
Jessica stood motionless near the sofa.
Jasmine remained beside her father, holding the document against her chest.
The lawyer began responding, but David interrupted with another question.
“Who instructed your office to remove my daughter from the property?””
He listened.
His jaw tightened.
Then he glanced at Jessica.
“I see.””
Those two words were enough to make her shift uneasily.
David turned away from her and continued the conversation.
“And was I contacted before this change was processed?””
Another pause.
“No?””
His voice became sharper.
“Then I want a complete explanation of the steps your office took, the documents you relied on, and the legal status of this transfer.””
Jasmine watched him carefully.
She had never heard her father speak this way about a family matter.
He was usually patient with people.
Even when he was angry, he preferred to discuss things privately and resolve them without creating a scene.
But this was different.
Someone had made a decision that affected his daughter and concealed it from him.
He wasn't going to dismiss it simply because the person responsible was his wife.
Jessica moved closer.
“David, please.””
He raised one finger, signaling for her to wait.
Then he listened to the lawyer again.
Finally, he said, “Do not make any further changes to the property records until this matter has been reviewed. Send me copies of everything connected to the transfer.””
He ended the call.
For a few seconds, the room was completely silent.
Jasmine looked at him.
“What did the lawyer say?””
David put his phone down.
“He's going to send me the paperwork and explain how the transfer was handled.””
“Can it be reversed?””
David paused.
“I don't want to make promises before I understand the legal situation. But I will find out exactly what happened, and I will not let this go unanswered.””
Jasmine nodded slowly.
It wasn't the complete reassurance she had wanted, but it was enough to make her feel that she wasn't facing the situation alone.
Jessica, however, seemed increasingly nervous.
“David, you're making this sound much worse than it is.””
He turned toward her.
“Much worse?””
“Yes. I was thinking about the children. That's all.””
“You keep saying that as if it excuses everything.””
Jessica clasped her hands together.
“My son is part of this family too. I didn't want him to feel that Jasmine was the only one who mattered.””
David stared at her.
“Who told you that Jasmine was the only one who mattered?””
Jessica didn't answer.
“Have I ever told you that your son doesn't deserve a future? Have I ever told you that he cannot be considered when we make family decisions?””
“No.””
“Then why did you behave as though you had to secretly take something away from Jasmine to give something to him?””
Jessica's expression hardened.
“Because if I had asked you, you might have refused.””
The moment she said it, she seemed to realize how damaging her words were.
David went silent.
Jasmine looked at her stepmother in disbelief.
There it was.
Not a misunderstanding.
Not a clerical error.
Not an unfortunate decision made in confusion.
Jessica had known David might disagree with her.
She had anticipated that he might say no.
And instead of accepting that possibility, she had gone around him.
David slowly nodded.
“So you knew I hadn't agreed.””
Jessica looked down.
“I wanted to make sure my son was protected.””
“By hiding the decision from me?””
“I thought I could explain it afterward.””
David shook his head.
“You didn't want to explain it afterward. You wanted the decision to be completed before anyone could stop you.””
Jessica's lips tightened.
“That's not fair.””
“What's not fair is making Jasmine believe she has lost her place in this family because you decided her future for her.””
Jasmine lowered her eyes.
She didn't want to argue with Jessica.
She didn't want to compete with her stepbrother.
She didn't even want the property to become a source of conflict.
All she wanted was to understand why her own family had allowed something so important to happen without telling her.
David turned toward her.
“Jasmine, I need you to understand something.””
She looked up.
“You did nothing wrong by asking about that document. You have every right to ask questions about a decision that affects you.””
Jasmine swallowed.
“But what if the property really has been transferred?””
“Then we will examine the facts and determine what can be done.””
He placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
“You do not have to fight your stepmother alone, and you do not have to accept a decision simply because someone made it without telling you.””
Jasmine's tears returned.
This time, they came from relief as much as pain.
“Thank you, Dad.””
David squeezed her shoulder gently.
Then he faced Jessica again.
“Now, let's be clear about what happens next.””
Jessica looked wary.
“What do you mean?””
“First, we wait for the lawyer's full explanation. Second, we review every document connected to this transfer. Third, you stop acting as though you have the right to make unilateral decisions about family property.””
Jessica's face flushed.
“You can't talk to me as if I'm a stranger in this house.””
“Then don't treat my daughter as if she's a stranger in her own family.””
The words landed heavily.
Jessica looked away.
For years, she had believed that being David's wife gave her a certain amount of authority over the family's affairs.
She had assumed she could influence decisions, negotiate arrangements, and secure her son's future.
But she had crossed a line.
And David was making it clear that he would not ignore it.
“I only wanted what was best for my son,” she said quietly.
David answered without hesitation.
“Then you should have discussed it with me honestly.””
“What if you had said no?””
“Then we would have discussed why.””
He took a breath.
“Marriage doesn't mean you get to hide major decisions from me. And being a mother doesn't mean you get to decide that another person's interests no longer matter.””
Jessica's eyes filled with frustration.
“So now everything is my fault?””
David shook his head.
“I'm not interested in blaming you for wanting your son to have a future. I'm holding you responsible for how you tried to secure it.””
That distinction left Jessica with little room to argue.
The television continued playing, but nobody paid attention to it.
Outside, the afternoon light was fading.
Jasmine looked down at the document again.
Her name was still there.
The property details were still there.
Nothing on the paper had changed.
But the atmosphere in the room had transformed completely.
David reached for the document.
“Give me that for now. We'll keep a copy of everything.””
Jasmine handed it to him.
He examined the page once more before placing it carefully on the table.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message had arrived from the lawyer's office.
David opened it.
His expression grew serious as he began reading the attached information.
Jessica immediately noticed.
“What is it?””
He didn't answer right away.
He scrolled through the document, examining the details.
Then he looked at his wife.
“Jessica, there's something here you haven't explained.””
She stiffened.
“What are you talking about?””
David turned the phone so he could read the relevant section again.
“The lawyer's office has sent me the information connected to the transfer.””
Jessica took a small step backward.
David's eyes narrowed.
“I want you to tell me exactly what you submitted to them, because this is not just about removing Jasmine's name.””
Jasmine stared at her father.
“What does that mean?””
David didn't answer her immediately.
He kept his attention on Jessica.
For the first time, she looked genuinely frightened.
Whatever she had expected when she secretly contacted the lawyer, it clearly hadn't included this conversation.
David set the phone down.
“Until I understand every detail, no one is going to pretend this matter is settled.””
May you like
Jessica's face went pale.
And Jasmine realized that the paper she had carried downstairs might have revealed only the beginning of what her stepmother had done.
