Chapter 10: The Day David Made His Final Decision

The lawyer's call came on a quiet Monday morning, and David knew from the moment he heard the man's voice that the time for uncertainty was finally coming to an end.

He was sitting in the drawing room when his phone rang.

Jasmine was nearby, arranging a few books on the coffee table.

Jessica was upstairs.

David answered.

“Good morning. Do you have the results of the review?””

“Yes, David,” the lawyer replied.

“I've completed the examination of the available records and verified the relevant property information. I'd like to meet with you to explain the findings and discuss the appropriate next steps.””

David sat straighter.

“Is there something important I need to know before we meet?””

“I can confirm that there are issues concerning the requested transfer that need to be addressed. I'd prefer to explain the details with the documents in front of us so that nothing is misunderstood.””

David looked toward Jasmine.

She had stopped arranging the books.

She was watching him with wide, anxious eyes.

“All right,” David said.

“I'll come to your office this morning.””

When he ended the call, Jasmine immediately approached him.

“Dad, was that the lawyer?””

“Yes.””

“Did he find out what happened?””

“He's completed the review. We're meeting him to discuss the findings.””

Jasmine swallowed.

“Does that mean we'll finally know whether the property was transferred?””

“We'll know much more than we did before.””

She looked down at her hands.

“I thought I would feel relieved when this day came. But now I'm nervous.””

David stood and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

“That's understandable. Whatever the documents say, we'll deal with the situation one step at a time.””

Jasmine nodded.

She wanted to believe him.

For days, she had lived with the uncertainty of not knowing whether her stepmother's actions had permanently changed her future.

She had tried to remain calm.

She had listened to David's assurances.

She had even accepted Jessica's apology, although the hurt had not disappeared.

But a question had continued to follow her everywhere.

What if the decision Jessica had made behind her back could not be undone?

David seemed to recognize the fear in her expression.

“Listen to me, Jasmine. We're going to establish the facts. We're not going to assume the worst, and we're not going to let anyone pressure us into accepting something without understanding it.””

He picked up his keys.

“Come with me if you want to hear the explanation directly.””

Jasmine nodded immediately.

“I want to come.””

Before they left, David called Jessica downstairs.

She appeared a few minutes later, looking cautious.

“What's happening?””

“The lawyer has completed the review. We're going to meet him this morning.””

Jessica's face changed.

“Has he made a decision?””

“He has findings to explain. We'll hear them directly.””

Jessica glanced at Jasmine.

“Do you think I should come?””

David considered the question.

“If you want to participate, you can. But I expect honest answers to every question.””

Jessica nodded.

“I'll come.””

For the first time in days, she seemed to understand that the outcome would not depend on how persuasively she explained her intentions.

It would depend on what the documents actually established.

The drive to the lawyer's office was uncomfortable.

Nobody argued.

Nobody tried to defend the transfer.

Jasmine sat beside David, watching the buildings pass outside the window.

Jessica sat in the back, holding her purse on her lap.

When they arrived, the lawyer greeted them and led them into the meeting room.

A thick folder rested on the table.

David took his seat.

Jasmine sat beside him.

Jessica sat opposite them.

The lawyer opened the folder.

“Thank you for coming. I've reviewed the request, the supporting documents, and the available property records. I want to explain what we can establish and what steps remain necessary.””

David leaned forward.

“Please go ahead.””

The lawyer turned to the first page.

“The request to change the property's ownership arrangements was submitted through your wife, Jessica. However, the records we reviewed do not establish that she had the authority to make the change in the manner requested.””

Jessica's face went pale.

David remained silent.

The lawyer continued carefully.

“The precise legal effect depends on the applicable ownership documents and the formal requirements governing the property. But the request itself cannot simply be treated as conclusive proof that the transfer was validly completed.””

Jasmine felt her breath catch.

“So does that mean the property hasn't automatically become her son's?””

The lawyer looked at her.

“Correct. We cannot conclude that ownership changed merely because the request was submitted. The relevant records and legal requirements determine that question.””

Jasmine turned toward her father.

David placed his hand over hers.

He didn't smile.

He didn't celebrate.

He simply nodded, as though a weight he had been carrying was finally beginning to lift.

“What happens now?”” he asked.

“The next step is to address the disputed request through the appropriate legal process, confirm the current ownership status, and make sure no further changes are made without the necessary authority.””

David nodded.

“Proceed with whatever steps are legally appropriate.””

Jessica sat motionless.

The explanation she had hoped would confirm her plan had instead made one thing clear: she could not simply declare that the property belonged to her son and expect everyone to accept it.

The lawyer closed one section of the folder and opened another.

“There is another important issue. The documents show that the request was made without the consultation and authorization David has described. That does not, by itself, resolve every legal question, but it explains why the matter requires further attention.””

David turned toward Jessica.

“Did you understand that you might not have the authority to do what you requested?””

Jessica lowered her eyes.

“I thought I could arrange it.””

“Based on what?””

She hesitated.

“I believed I could make the arrangements and explain them afterward.””

David shook his head.

“You knew I hadn't agreed.””

Jessica's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

The admission hung in the room.

For the first time, she wasn't blaming uncertainty or suggesting that the lawyer had misunderstood her intentions.

She was acknowledging what David had been asking her to explain from the beginning.

He looked at her for several seconds.

“Why, Jessica?””

She wiped her cheek.

“Because I was afraid my son would always come second.””

David's expression softened slightly, but his voice remained firm.

“Did I ever tell you that he would always come second?””

“No.””

“Did I ever tell you that I wouldn't consider his future?””

“No.””

“Then you made a decision based on a fear you never even discussed with me.””

Jessica nodded.

“I know.””

David looked down at the documents.

He had imagined this moment many times.

Part of him had expected to feel furious.

Another part had expected relief.

Instead, he felt a deep sadness that the situation had ever reached this point.

He had wanted a family in which the children could feel secure without competing for their parents' attention.

He had wanted his wife to trust him enough to discuss difficult subjects openly.

He had wanted Jasmine to grow up knowing that she did not have to earn her place in the family every time someone questioned her future.

Instead, one secret decision had made Jasmine question all three things.

The lawyer gave them time to absorb the explanation before continuing.

“I recommend that you obtain any additional independent legal advice you consider necessary before making decisions about the property's long-term arrangements. We should also preserve all relevant correspondence and avoid treating the disputed transfer as final until its status has been properly resolved.””

David agreed.

“I want everything handled correctly.””

“That's the appropriate approach.””

The meeting continued as the lawyer explained the next procedural steps.

David asked about the records, the timeline, and the options available for addressing the disputed request.

He made it clear that he wanted no further changes made without the required authority.

Jasmine listened carefully.

She didn't understand every legal detail, but she understood the essential point.

Jessica's decision had not automatically settled the future of the property.

There were legal questions to resolve, and those questions would be addressed through the proper process.

When the meeting ended, David thanked the lawyer.

He gathered his copy of the documents and stood.

Jessica rose slowly.

For a moment, she looked as though she wanted to speak.

But she remained silent until they reached the hallway.

Then she turned toward David.

“Can we talk before we go home?””

David looked at her.

“Yes. But I want you to understand that the legal review doesn't erase what happened between us.””

Jessica nodded.

“I understand.””

Jasmine waited nearby.

She was relieved that the review had clarified the situation, but she knew the family still had difficult conversations ahead.

David turned toward his daughter.

“Are you ready to go?””

She nodded.

“Yes, Dad.””

As they walked toward the exit, Jasmine felt something she hadn't felt since the day she received the document.

Hope.

Not because every legal question had been settled.

Not because Jessica's actions no longer mattered.

But because the truth was finally being examined instead of buried beneath excuses.

And her father had stood beside her throughout the process.

For Jasmine, that meant more than any promise about property ever could.

When they arrived home, David asked Jessica to join him and Jasmine in the drawing room.

He placed the documents on the coffee table.

“We need to decide how we're going to move forward as a family.””

Jessica sat down slowly.

Jasmine remained beside her father.

David looked at his wife.

“The legal process will continue until the property's status and the appropriate next steps are fully established. We will follow the lawyer's advice. We will not make assumptions, and we will not allow anyone to act behind the family's back again.””

Jessica nodded.

“I agree.””

“Second, any future discussion about the children's interests must be open. If you believe your son needs security, you tell me. We discuss the options honestly.””

Jessica wiped her eyes.

“I should have done that from the beginning.””

“Yes, you should have.””

He paused.

“And third, you need to understand what your decision did to Jasmine.””

Jessica turned toward her stepdaughter.

Jasmine looked back at her.

“I thought I was losing my place in the family,” Jasmine said quietly.

“I thought someone had decided I didn't deserve to be included anymore.””

Jessica's face crumpled.

“I'm sorry.””

Jasmine waited.

Jessica continued.

“I was so focused on making sure my son had something secure that I stopped thinking about what I was doing to you. I convinced myself I was protecting him, but I was treating you unfairly.””

For the first time, her apology contained no excuse.

No warning about what Jasmine might do in the future.

No suggestion that the transfer had been necessary.

Just an acknowledgment of the harm she had caused.

Jasmine felt tears gathering in her eyes.

“Why didn't you trust me enough to talk to me?””

Jessica looked down.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That your father would give you everything and my son would be left without anything.””

David's expression tightened.

“Jessica, that's the fear you should have brought to me. Instead, you made a decision that created exactly the kind of conflict you wanted to avoid.””

Jessica nodded through her tears.

“I know.””

David turned toward Jasmine.

“I want you to remember something. You don't have to fight for your place in this family. And you don't have to give up your interests to prove that you care about someone else.””

Jasmine wiped her cheeks.

“I never wanted to fight.””

“I know.””

He took her hand.

“You wanted to be treated fairly. That's not too much to ask.””

Jessica looked at them.

For years, she had imagined that securing her son's future required her to act before someone else could claim everything.

Now she understood that she had created a battle that didn't need to exist.

She had turned a family discussion into a secret transaction.

She had made Jasmine feel unwanted.

And she had damaged David's trust.

There would be consequences for those choices, even if the legal questions were resolved.

David stood and looked at Jessica.

“I am not going to decide the future of our marriage in anger today. But trust will have to be rebuilt, and that will take time.””

Jessica nodded.

“I understand.””

“And the property will be handled through the proper legal process. No secret instructions. No unilateral decisions.””

“I agree.””

David held her gaze.

“I hope you mean that.””

Jessica had no answer beyond a quiet nod.

Later that evening, Jasmine sat with her father in the garden.

The air was cool, and the house behind them was unusually quiet.

She looked toward the windows before speaking.

“Dad, do you think things will ever feel normal again?””

David considered the question.

“Maybe. But I think we'll have to build something better than the way things were before.””

Jasmine turned toward him.

“What do you mean?””

“I mean that we need a family where people can express their concerns without making secret decisions. Where nobody has to wonder whether their place can be taken away without warning.””

She rested her head against his shoulder.

“I wish it had never happened.””

“So do I.””

He placed an arm around her.

“But now we know what needs to change.””

Jasmine closed her eyes.

She still didn't know exactly how the legal process would conclude.

She knew that Jessica's apology could not immediately restore the trust that had been broken.

And she knew that her stepbrother's future would still need to be discussed fairly.

But she no longer felt invisible.

She no longer felt that she had to remain silent to keep the family together.

And she no longer believed that being nineteen meant she had no right to ask questions about decisions affecting her future.

David had made his position clear.

Jessica could want security for her son.

She could express her concerns.

She could participate in legitimate discussions about the family's future.

But she could not secretly remove Jasmine from the property and expect the decision to stand simply because she had made it.

That lesson had come at a painful cost.

And as the evening settled around them, Jasmine finally understood that her father's greatest gift was not a promise about land, money, or inheritance.

It was his willingness to stand beside her when someone had tried to make her feel that she no longer belonged.

The property dispute would continue through the proper legal process.

The family's trust would take time to rebuild.

And Jessica would have to prove, through her actions, that she had learned from what she had done.

But one thing had changed forever.

Jasmine would never again confuse keeping the peace with accepting unfair treatment.

And David would never again allow an important family decision to be hidden behind the excuse of protecting someone he loved.

Because family was not supposed to be a competition over who deserved more.

It was supposed to be a place where everyone could speak, where concerns could be discussed honestly, and where nobody had to discover their future through a letter sent by a lawyer.

That was the boundary David had finally drawn.

And this time, everyone in the family understood that he meant it.
