Chapter 1: The Paper That Changed Everything
Jasmine had never imagined that a single piece of paper could make her feel like a stranger in her own family.
At nineteen, she still believed that family meant something permanent.
She believed that the house her father had worked so hard to build, the land that had belonged to their family for years, and the memories they had created together could never be taken away from her without her knowledge.
She was wrong.
That afternoon, Jasmine had been upstairs in her bedroom when she received a message from the family lawyer’s office.
The message was brief.
A document had been sent to her for review, and she was advised to read it carefully.
At first, she assumed it was another routine family matter.
Perhaps her father, David, needed her signature on some paperwork.
Perhaps there had been a change in the property records.
She opened the attachment without thinking much of it.
Then she read the first few lines.
Her smile disappeared.
She read them again.
And again.
Her name was there.
So was the name of the family property.
But the document stated that she was being removed from the list of people with an interest in that property.
Jasmine felt a strange tightness in her chest.
“What does this mean?”” she whispered.
She scrolled down, searching for an explanation.
The more she read, the more confused she became.
There was no conversation she remembered having with her father about this.
There had been no family meeting.
No warning.
No discussion about selling the property or changing its ownership.
Yet someone had apparently made a decision that affected her future without even telling her.
And the lawyer’s office had processed the request.
Her first thought was that there had been a mistake.
Her second thought was that her father would know what was happening.
David had always been the person she turned to when something went wrong.
He might be strict sometimes, but he had never made her feel that her place in the family was something she had to beg for.
Jasmine hurried downstairs, clutching the document so tightly that the edges began to bend.
She found David sitting on the sofa in the drawing room, watching television.
He looked comfortable, completely unaware that his daughter was about to ask him a question that would change the atmosphere of their home.
“Dad!””
David turned toward her.
“What is it, Jasmine? Why are you running?””
She approached him and held out the paper.
“Dad, why did our lawyer send me this?””
David took the document.
His expression was relaxed at first.
Then his eyes moved across the page.
His eyebrows drew together.
He leaned forward and read it again.
“What is this?””
Jasmine swallowed.
“That’s what I want to know.””
David looked up at her.
“It says you’re being removed from our family property.””
His voice had changed.
Jasmine nodded, struggling to keep her emotions under control.
“Did I do something wrong? Did you decide you didn’t want me to have anything to do with it anymore?””
David immediately shook his head.
“No. Absolutely not.””
He examined the document again, searching for the authorization.
“I never instructed the lawyer to do this.””
Jasmine stared at him.
“You didn't?””
“Of course I didn't!””
David placed the paper on the coffee table, his face darkening with anger.
“Who authorized this?””
Jasmine had no answer.
She had spent the entire walk downstairs hoping that her father would explain everything and tell her that the document was nothing more than an administrative error.
Instead, she was watching him discover the same shocking news she had just found.
For the first time, she realized that someone might have deliberately done this.
Someone inside their own home.
David picked up the paper again.
He checked the dates.
He looked at the names.
Then he reached for his phone, preparing to call the lawyer.
Before he could dial, a voice came from the doorway.
“You don't need to call anyone.””
Both of them turned.
Jessica, David’s wife and Jasmine’s stepmother, had entered the drawing room.
She was dressed neatly, her expression composed.
She looked at the document on the table, then at Jasmine.
There was no surprise on her face.
No confusion.
No sign that she had just witnessed an unexpected family crisis.
Instead, she walked into the room as if she had been waiting for this conversation.
David slowly lowered his phone.
“What did you just say?””
Jessica stopped beside the sofa.
“I said you don't need to call anyone. I already know why Jasmine received that document.””
Jasmine felt her stomach drop.
She looked at Jessica, searching her face for some indication that she had misunderstood.
“Why would you know anything about it?””
Jessica took a breath.
Then she answered with a calmness that made the words even more painful.
“Because I told the lawyer to remove you from the property.””
For a moment, nobody moved.
The television continued playing in the background.
A clock ticked somewhere in the room.
Jasmine stared at her stepmother, unable to believe what she had heard.
David slowly stood up.
“You did WHAT?””
Jessica's expression tightened slightly.
But she didn't take back her words.
And as David looked from his wife to the document in his hand, he began to understand that the situation was far more serious than a simple mistake.
