Chapter 9: The Person Nobody Suspected

David gripped the phone.

“What do you mean, she didn't submit it alone?””

Christopher Bennett spoke quickly.

“I can't tell you everything over the phone. I need you to understand that I have records showing more than one person had access to the financial information.””

“Then tell me who.””

“I believe you should obtain the university's verification records first. The person who submitted the request may have used information from an earlier application.””

David looked at Jasmine.

She was watching him with wide, frightened eyes.

“Mr. Bennett, I'm done with half-answers. You contacted me because you said I deserved to know the truth. Now tell me what you know.””

Bennett fell silent.

Finally, he said, “The request was submitted from an email account associated with your household. But the address wasn't Jessica's primary account.””

David's mind raced.

“Whose account was it?””

“I can't verify the account holder's identity from the records I have.””

“Then what can you verify?””

“That the change request was created using information from a scholarship document and a financial application. Both files were accessed from the same device.””

David's chest tightened.

“Which device?””

“A laptop registered to your household.””

He looked toward the staircase.

Cameron's laptop.

Jasmine's laptop.

Jessica's laptop.

There were several possibilities.

“Did you give anyone permission to access those files?”” David asked.

“No. I was only involved in the loan application and the financial review. I don't have authority over the university's records.””

“Then why are you calling me?””

“Because Jessica asked me to help her resolve the financial situation, and I discovered that the problem was bigger than she had described. I don't want my records used to mislead anyone.””

David exhaled sharply.

“Send everything you can legally provide to my attorney.””

“I will.””

“And don't contact Jasmine or the university directly. We'll handle that through the proper channels.””

“Understood.””

After the call ended, David stood motionless in the hallway.

Jasmine stepped closer.

“Dad, what did he say?””

“He believes someone else may have been involved in the attempt to change your scholarship details.””

“Who?””

“He doesn't know for certain.””

Jasmine stared at him.

“Could it have been Cameron?””

David shook his head.

“I won't accuse anyone without evidence.””

“But if someone tried to take the money again—”

“Then we'll find out who did it.””

He contacted the university once more, requesting that all changes to Jasmine's scholarship account require direct verification from her. He also helped her change her email password and secure her university account.

Jasmine followed each step carefully.

Her hands trembled as she typed.

“I feel like I can't trust anything anymore,” she whispered.

David stood behind her chair.

“You don't have to trust everyone immediately. Start by protecting your accounts and keeping copies of the records.””

She nodded.

When they finished, David checked the clock.

It was nearly six.

Cameron had been upstairs for more than an hour.

David called him down.

The boy appeared wearing sweatpants and a gray T-shirt, his phone in his hand.

“What's going on?””

David gestured toward the sofa.

“Sit down, Cameron.””

Cameron looked at Jasmine, then sat.

David kept his voice calm.

“Someone submitted a request to change the destination account for Jasmine's scholarship disbursement. The university flagged it before any money was released.””

Cameron's face changed.

“What?””

“The request appears to have been made using information connected to our household. I need to ask you whether you know anything about it.””

Cameron shook his head immediately.

“No. I didn't do that.””

David studied him.

“Have you used Mom's laptop recently?””

“Yesterday. I was looking for a video from practice.””

“Did you open any financial documents?””

“No.””

“Did you see an email about Jasmine's scholarship?””

Cameron hesitated.

Then he nodded.

“I saw one a few days ago.””

Jasmine stiffened.

“What email?””

Cameron looked at her.

“Mom was printing something. I went downstairs to get my charger, and the printer had a page with your name on it. I didn't read the whole thing.””

“What did it say?”” David asked.

Cameron frowned, trying to remember.

“It mentioned your scholarship and an account change. I thought it was something Mom was doing to help you.””

Jasmine's voice rose.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't think it was important! I didn't know she was trying to move money again!””

David raised a hand.

“Cameron, slow down. Did you touch the document?””

“No.””

“Did you photograph it?””

“No.””

“Did you send it to anyone?””

“No!””

His voice cracked.

“I swear, Dad, I didn't do this.””

David believed that Cameron was frightened, but fear alone could not establish what had happened.

He needed the records.

“Okay,” he said.

“We're going to verify everything. Until then, don't delete anything from your devices or accounts.””

Cameron nodded.

Jasmine looked away.

She wanted to believe him.

But the possibility that someone in the house had tried to redirect her scholarship money had reopened every wound Jessica had created.

“Can I go upstairs?”” Cameron asked.

David nodded.

Cameron stood, then paused.

“Jasmine?””

She looked at him.

“I didn't take your money.””

Jasmine swallowed.

“I don't know what to believe right now.””

Cameron lowered his eyes and walked upstairs.

David sat beside his daughter.

“I know this is difficult.””

Jasmine shook her head.

“What if it was him?””

“Then we'll deal with the truth. But I won't let suspicion become proof.””

She leaned against him.

For the next hour, David reviewed the bank statements and email records he had already collected. He made a list of every suspicious transaction, every account number, and every person who had access to the relevant documents.

At 7:42 p.m., his phone rang.

It was Margaret.

“David, I just got a strange call.””

“What happened?””

“Jessica called me. She said you were trying to destroy her life and that you had taken her jewelry.””

David closed his eyes.

“I asked her to leave the jewelry available for appraisal while we determine how the money can be replaced.””

“She said you were threatening to sell everything she owns.””

“That's not what I said.””

Margaret sighed.

“I figured. But she also told me something else.””

David straightened.

“What?””

“She said Cameron was the one who suggested using Jasmine's scholarship money for the uniforms.””

David went still.

“Did she say why?””

“She said he knew the family was struggling financially and told her the money could be replaced later.””

David looked toward the staircase.

“Margaret, did you believe her?””

“No. Something about the way she described it didn't make sense. She kept insisting that Cameron had given her permission, but she couldn't explain why Jasmine would have agreed.””

David felt a cold wave of anger.

Jessica was now blaming her own son.

“Thank you for telling me,” he said.

“Please don't repeat that story to anyone until we have the facts.””

After ending the call, David went upstairs.

Cameron was sitting on the edge of his bed, staring at his phone.

“Cameron?””

The boy looked up.

“Did Mom call you?””

Cameron nodded.

“What did she say?””

“She asked me to tell everyone that I knew about the uniforms and that I was okay with it.””

David sat in the chair beside the desk.

“Did you?””

“No. I told her I wasn't going to lie.””

“What did she say?””

Cameron looked down.

“She said I was ungrateful. She said she'd spent years sacrificing everything for me, and now I was choosing you and Jasmine over her.””

His voice broke.

“I don't want to choose sides, Dad.””

David moved beside him.

“You don't have to choose sides to tell the truth.””

Cameron wiped his eyes.

“Then why does she keep making me feel like I'm betraying her?””

David had no easy answer.

He put an arm around the boy's shoulders.

“Because she's frightened and trying to protect herself. That doesn't make what she's asking you to do right.””

Cameron leaned into him.

“I wish none of this had happened.””

“So do I.””

They sat quietly until David's phone buzzed.

It was an email from his attorney.

The university had provided preliminary information about the attempted account change. The request had been submitted through a temporary email address, but the recovery phone number matched a number previously used by Jessica.

David read the message twice.

That was significant, but it wasn't the entire picture.

The attorney also noted that the university's records showed the request had been initiated from a device that had accessed Jasmine's scholarship documents earlier that week.

David thanked the attorney and asked for the complete record when it became available.

Then he went back downstairs.

Jasmine was waiting in the living room.

“Did you talk to Cameron?””

“Yes.””

“Did he know about the request?””

“He saw a document, but he says he didn't submit anything.””

Jasmine folded her arms.

“And you believe him?””

“I believe we need evidence before we accuse him.””

She looked frustrated.

“Dad, I feel like I'm the only person who has to prove I'm telling the truth.””

David's expression softened.

“You shouldn't have to prove that your money belongs to you. It does. We're investigating because someone tried to interfere with your account, and we need to stop it from happening again.””

Jasmine took a shaky breath.

“I just want this to be over.””

David pulled her into a hug.

“I know.””

At 9:15 p.m., the doorbell rang.

David opened it to find Jessica standing on the porch.

She looked exhausted. Her eyes were swollen, and she held a thick envelope against her chest.

“I need to talk to you,” she said.

David remained in the doorway.

“About what?””

She glanced past him.

“About the scholarship request.””

David's expression changed.

“How do you know about that?””

Jessica's fingers tightened around the envelope.

“Because I know who submitted it.””

Behind David, Jasmine appeared in the hallway.

“Who?”” she asked.

Jessica looked at her.

Then she said something that made both of them freeze.

“Cameron wasn't the only person who had access to those documents.””

David stared at his wife.

“Then tell us who did.””

Jessica swallowed.

She looked down at the envelope, then back at David.

“I have proof.””

She stepped inside and placed it on the coffee table.

David opened the envelope.

Inside were printed emails, screenshots, and a copy of the scholarship change request.

The first few pages showed messages between Jessica and an unfamiliar email address.

David read the opening lines.

Then he stopped.

The sender wasn't Cameron.

It wasn't Christopher Bennett.

It was someone Jessica had described as a trusted family friend.

Someone who had been helping her organize the move and manage the money.

At the bottom of the final email was a message that made David's blood run cold.

*Once the scholarship account is redirected, neither David nor Jasmine will be able to trace the transfer until the funds have cleared.*

David slowly raised his eyes.

“Jessica, who wrote this?””

She looked at Jasmine.

Then she whispered a name.

“Your aunt Margaret.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Jasmine stared at her stepmother.

“My aunt Margaret?””

David shook his head.

“No. Margaret would never do this without telling me.””

Jessica pushed the papers toward him.

“Then ask her why her email address appears in the records.””

David looked down at the printed messages.

The address was familiar.

But something about the formatting seemed wrong.

He picked up his phone and called Margaret.

She answered on the second ring.

“David? Is everything okay?””

He looked at Jessica.

Then at the suspicious email.

“Margaret, I need you to answer a very important question.””

“Of course. What is it?””

“Have you been communicating with Jessica about Jasmine's scholarship money?””

There was a pause.

Then Margaret answered firmly.

“No. And whatever she's told you, don't believe it until you've checked the actual email records.””

David felt his pulse quicken.

“Why?””

“Because someone sent me a message this afternoon claiming that I had authorized a financial transfer. I thought it was a scam, so I didn't respond.””

David looked at the printed email again.

Margaret continued.

“David, I think someone is using my name.””

The line went quiet.

May you like

And suddenly, David realized the next person he needed to investigate might not be the person Jessica had accused.

It might be the person who had been helping her all along.
