Chapter 8: The Family Meeting That Changed Everything

By noon, David had spoken with an attorney and contacted the bank again.

He had been advised to preserve all relevant records, avoid making unsupported accusations, and allow the appropriate institutions to investigate the suspicious application and transfers.

The attorney had also explained that the consequences would depend on the evidence, the account ownership, and the applicable law.

David wasn't interested in revenge for its own sake.

He wanted his daughter's scholarship restored, his own financial information protected, and an accurate account of what Jessica had done.

But there was one more person who needed to hear the truth.

Cameron.

David found him in the backyard, shooting baskets at the hoop beside the garage.

The ball struck the rim and bounced across the concrete.

Cameron retrieved it and turned when he heard the back door open.

“Hey, Dad.””

David leaned against the doorframe.

“Can we talk?””

Cameron caught the ball against his hip.

“Is Mom okay?””

“She's upset.””

“Because of the loan?””

David nodded.

Cameron looked down at the ball.

“Is she going to jail?””

“I don't know, son. That's not something I can predict. The bank and the appropriate professionals will have to determine what happened.””

Cameron swallowed.

“Did she really sign your name?””

“Yes.””

The boy closed his eyes.

“I knew something was wrong.””

David walked closer.

“What do you mean?””

Cameron bounced the ball once, then caught it.

“For weeks, Mom kept talking about moving. She said the house was too expensive and that you never understood how much she sacrificed for me.””

David listened without interrupting.

“She said she could give me better training opportunities if we moved closer to the city. She showed me apartments and told me not to mention them to Jasmine because Jasmine was already stressed about college.””

“Did you think she was planning to leave me?””

Cameron looked miserable.

“Not at first.””

“When did you start thinking that?””

“Last week. She told me that if everything worked out, we'd have a fresh start before the end of the month.””

David took a slow breath.

“Did she tell you about the loan?””

“No. I found out about that yesterday, when I saw the email.””

Cameron sat on the low wall beside the hoop.

“I thought she was just trying to help me.””

David sat beside him.

“You didn't ask her to take Jasmine's money, did you?””

“No.””

“Did you know the scholarship money was being used?””

Cameron hesitated.

“I knew she was paying for the uniforms. I didn't know it was Jasmine's money until Tuesday night.””

“And you told me when you realized something was wrong.””

Cameron nodded.

“I should've said something sooner.””

“Maybe. But you're not responsible for your mother's financial decisions.””

Cameron stared at the ball.

“Jasmine hates me now.””

“She's hurt. That's not the same thing.””

“What if she never forgives me?””

David considered his answer.

“You can't force her to forgive you. What you can do is tell the truth, stop accepting benefits that come at her expense, and show her through your actions that you understand what happened.””

Cameron nodded slowly.

Then he said, “Dad, there's something else you should know.””

David waited.

“Mom told the coach that the uniforms were a family sponsorship. She wanted the team to announce her name at the tournament.””

David frowned.

“Why?””

“She said it would help her build connections with people who might support my basketball career. She wanted everyone to know she was the person who made the uniforms possible.””

David looked toward the house.

So the uniforms weren't only about Cameron's future.

They were also about Jessica's image.

She wanted the recognition that came with being a generous parent, even if the generosity was funded by money that didn't belong to her.

“Did she ask the coach to announce her name?””

“Yes.””

“Did he know where the money came from?””

“I don't think so.””

David stood.

“Thank you for telling me.””

Cameron looked up.

“Are we still a family?””

The question stopped David cold.

He crouched beside the boy.

“Yes,” he said firmly.

“You're still my family. Jasmine is still my family. Nothing about what your mother did changes your place here.””

Cameron nodded, fighting tears.

David pulled him into a brief hug.

Then he returned inside.

Jessica was waiting in the living room.

She had changed clothes and packed two small suitcases. They stood beside the front door.

David stopped when he saw them.

“Where are you going?””

Jessica folded her arms.

“To my sister's house.””

“Is that your decision?””

“I need space.””

David looked at the suitcases.

“And Cameron?””

“He can come with me if he wants.””

David's expression hardened.

“Cameron is not a possession you can take with you to punish me.””

“I'm his mother!””

“And I'm the person who has been helping raise him for years. We will not turn him into a weapon in this argument.””

Jessica's face flushed.

“You're the one making everything impossible!””

“No. I'm asking for honesty.””

She picked up her handbag.

“I cannot live in a house where everyone treats me like a criminal.””

David held her gaze.

“Then tell the truth and cooperate with the investigation.””

Jessica laughed bitterly.

“You think telling the truth will fix everything?””

“No. But lying has made everything worse.””

She looked toward the staircase.

Jasmine was standing at the top, watching.

Jessica called up to her.

“Jasmine, I know you're angry. But I hope one day you'll understand that I was trying to protect Cameron.””

Jasmine didn't move.

“You could have protected him without hurting me.””

Jessica's mouth tightened.

“I didn't know you would react this way.””

Jasmine descended the stairs slowly.

“You spent money that wasn't yours. You lied to Dad. You signed his name on a loan application. You planned to leave without telling him.””

She stopped a few feet from her stepmother.

“What reaction did you expect?””

Jessica looked away.

“I expected you to be more understanding.””

Jasmine gave a quiet, disbelieving laugh.

“Of course you did.””

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Then Jasmine said something that made David look at her with a mixture of sadness and pride.

“You don't have to apologize to me because you got caught. You have to understand why what you did was wrong.””

Jessica's eyes filled with tears.

“I am sorry.””

Jasmine nodded.

“Then prove it.””

Jessica picked up her suitcases.

At the door, she turned toward David.

“Are you going to let me come back?””

David didn't answer immediately.

“I don't know what our marriage will look like after this. But the next steps will depend on what we learn, whether you take responsibility, and whether the financial damage can be addressed honestly.””

Jessica stared at him.

“You're really considering ending our marriage?””

“I'm considering what I need to do to protect this family.””

She opened the door.

Before leaving, she looked at Jasmine one last time.

Then she walked outside.

The door closed softly behind her.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Cameron appeared in the hallway.

“Is Mom gone?””

David nodded.

“For now.””

Cameron looked toward the suitcases that were no longer there.

“Can I call her?””

“Of course. She's your mother.””

Cameron took out his phone and went upstairs.

Jasmine sat on the sofa.

She looked exhausted.

“Dad, I know I should feel relieved,” she said.

“But I just feel sad.””

David sat beside her.

“You can feel both.””

“I keep thinking about what our family used to be.””

David put an arm around her shoulders.

“Sometimes we remember the good parts of a situation and wish they could erase the bad parts. But you don't have to pretend the bad parts didn't happen.””

Jasmine rested her head against him.

For a few minutes, the house was quiet.

Then David's phone rang.

It was the attorney.

“Mr. Carter,” she said, “I've reviewed the document you sent. There are several matters we need to address, but one detail is particularly important.””

David stood and walked toward the hallway.

“What is it?””

“The application appears to have been submitted using financial information that may have come from your household records. I recommend we obtain the lender's original file and establish exactly what was submitted, when, and by whom.””

“Can you do that?””

“I can advise you on the appropriate steps. We'll need to request the records formally.””

David thanked her and ended the call.

He was about to return to the living room when another notification appeared.

It was an email from the university's financial aid office.

His heart began to pound.

The subject line read:

*URGENT: Scholarship Disbursement Review.*

He opened it.

The message explained that the university had received a request to change the destination account for Jasmine's scholarship disbursement. The request had been submitted two days earlier and was awaiting verification.

David read the details twice.

The destination account was not Jasmine's.

It was an account ending in the same four digits as the account that had received the unexplained $3,200 transfer.

He called Jasmine immediately.

“Sweetheart, come here.””

She hurried over.

“What happened?””

David showed her the email.

Jasmine read it, and her face drained of color.

“Someone tried to change where my scholarship money was going?””

“Apparently.””

“But the money was already deposited.””

“This appears to concern the disbursement instructions on file. We need to verify the details with the university.””

Jasmine looked at the account information.

Then she whispered, “Dad, that's not the account I gave them.””

David picked up his phone and called the financial aid office.

As he waited for someone to answer, Jasmine gripped his arm.

“Please tell me they didn't send anything else.””

A representative finally came on the line.

David explained the situation and provided the reference number from the email.

After checking the record, the representative confirmed that the change request had been flagged for verification and that no new payment had been released.

David exhaled.

“Thank you. Please keep the request on hold while we investigate.””

When he ended the call, Jasmine covered her face.

Someone had tried to redirect another scholarship payment.

And the attempt had been made after Jessica's original theft had already come to light.

David looked toward the front door.

Jessica was gone.

But whoever had submitted that request might still have access to information connected to Jasmine's finances.

Then his phone rang again.

This time, it was Christopher Bennett.

“Mr. Carter,” Bennett said urgently, “I think you need to know who submitted the change request.””

David's blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Bennett hesitated.

May you like

Then he spoke a name David had never expected to hear.

“Your wife didn't submit it alone.””
