Chapter 4: The Secret Cameron Was Afraid to Tell

David read Cameron's message three times.

The money wasn't all for basketball. And if you want to know where the rest went, you need to check Mom's email.

He stared at the screen, trying to understand what his seventeen-year-old stepson was telling him.

Cameron had always been a complicated boy. He was competitive, occasionally entitled, and accustomed to Jessica solving his problems. But David had never thought of him as dishonest.

Now, for the first time, he wondered how much Cameron actually knew about the missing scholarship money.

He typed a reply.

Where are you?

The answer came almost immediately.

At the gym. Practice ends at five. Please don't tell Mom I messaged you.

David glanced at the clock.

It was 3:42 p.m.

He wanted to drive straight to the basketball gym and demand answers. But Cameron had sounded frightened, and David knew that confronting him in anger might cause the boy to shut down.

Instead, he wrote:

I'll meet you outside the gym at five. We need to talk honestly.

Then he put his phone down.

Jasmine sat at the kitchen table with her laptop open, pretending to read an email from her university. She had been watching her father carefully since Jessica's phone call.

“What did Cameron say?”” she asked.

David hesitated.

“He says there's more to the story.””

Jasmine slowly closed her laptop.

“Did he know about the scholarship money?””

“I don't know.””

She stared at the wooden tabletop.

“If he knew, Dad, I don't understand how he could let her do this.””

David pulled out the chair beside her.

“Let's not decide what happened until we hear him out.””

“But what if he knew the whole time?””

“Then we'll deal with that.””

Jasmine's eyes filled with tears again.

“Why does everyone keep expecting me to understand? When Cameron wants something, everyone has to make it happen. When I need something, I'm told to be patient, work harder, or figure it out myself.””

David had no easy answer.

He reached for her hand.

“You shouldn't have been put in that position. And you don't have to pretend this hasn't hurt you.””

Jasmine nodded, then looked toward the stairs.

“Mom always says Cameron has more pressure on him because he's trying to become a professional athlete.””

“That's no excuse for taking your money.””

“I know.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“But sometimes I wonder if she ever wanted me here.””

David felt the words settle heavily in his chest.

He had married Jessica four years earlier, believing that love and patience would help their blended family become stronger. He had tried to give Cameron the same opportunities he gave Jasmine.

But he had never considered that Jessica might be quietly measuring the children's worth against one another.

He squeezed Jasmine's hand.

“You belong here. Nobody gets to change that.””

At 4:50 p.m., David drove to Westbrook High School's athletic complex.

The gym was loud enough to hear from the parking lot. Sneakers squeaked across the polished floor, and the hollow thud of basketballs echoed through the open doors.

David found Cameron sitting alone on a bench near the side entrance.

His basketball bag rested between his feet. His new team jacket was zipped up to his chin, despite the warm afternoon.

When Cameron saw David, he stood.

“Hey.””

David studied his face.

“You said you had something to tell me.””

Cameron looked toward the gym doors.

“Can we go somewhere private?””

They walked to David's truck and sat inside.

For nearly a minute, Cameron said nothing.

Finally, David spoke.

“Cameron, I'm not here to attack you. But Jasmine's scholarship money is gone, and I need to understand why.””

Cameron stared at his hands.

“I didn't know she was going to use that money.””

David waited.

“I swear, I didn't know it was her scholarship at first,” Cameron continued.

“Mom told me she had money set aside for the team. She said you knew about it.””

“Did you believe her?””

Cameron nodded.

“Yeah. Why wouldn't I?””

David looked through the windshield at a group of students crossing the parking lot.

“When did you find out?””

Cameron swallowed.

“Tuesday.””

“That was the day the uniforms arrived?””

“Yeah.””

“What happened Tuesday?””

Cameron leaned forward, elbows on his knees.

“Coach was talking about the team's expenses. Mom came to the gym with the delivery. She was excited because everything matched, and she said she had paid for the whole order.””

“And?””

“Coach thanked her. Then he asked whether the sponsorship payment had gone through.””

David turned toward him.

“What sponsorship payment?””

Cameron rubbed his forehead.

“Five thousand dollars. Mom told the coach she was going to sponsor the team, but the money hadn't arrived. When he asked her about it, she said there had been a banking delay.””

David felt his stomach tighten.

“Did she tell you where the money came from?””

Cameron shook his head.

“Not then.””

“When did you learn about Jasmine's scholarship?””

Cameron looked down.

“Later that evening. I heard Mom arguing with someone on the phone. She said she had moved the money before you noticed the account balance.””

David's expression changed.

“She said that?””

“Not exactly. She said something like, 'He won't notice until the tuition deadline.''”

For several seconds, David couldn't speak.

Cameron looked up.

“Dad, I didn't know what to do.””

“You could have told me.””

“I know.””

“Why didn't you?””

Cameron's eyes reddened.

“Because Mom told me you would blame me. She said you would think I had pressured her into buying the uniforms.””

David leaned back.

“And you were afraid I'd be angry with you?””

“Yeah.””

“Cameron, did you ask her to take Jasmine's money?””

“No!””

The answer came so quickly that David believed the boy was telling the truth.

Cameron continued, his voice breaking.

“I wanted new uniforms. Of course I did. The old ones were falling apart, and some of the guys were embarrassed. But I didn't ask her to steal anything.””

David let the silence settle.

Then he asked, “What did she do with the money that wasn't paid to the supplier?””

Cameron shook his head.

“I don't know. But I saw her looking at apartments online last week.””

David frowned.

“Apartments?””

“She said she wanted to move closer to the athletic center because my training sessions start early. She told me it was just research.””

“Did she say anything about moving out of the house?””

“No.””

Cameron hesitated.

Then he reached into his basketball bag and pulled out his phone.

“There is something else.””

He opened a photograph and handed the phone to David.

It showed an email on a computer screen. The sender's name was Jessica Carter.

The subject line read: *Private Transfer — Confirmation Required.*

David read the visible text.

As discussed, the remaining funds will be transferred once the equipment payment clears. Please keep this arrangement confidential until the move is finalized.

Below it was a partial account number and the name of a property management company.

David looked up.

“Where did you get this?””

“It was open on Mom's laptop. I went downstairs to ask her about the sponsorship, and she had left the screen on.””

“Did you read the entire email?””

“No. I took a picture because I thought something was wrong.””

David stared at the image again.

“Why didn't you tell me sooner?””

Cameron looked away.

“Because I thought I could convince her to put the money back.””

“Did you?””

Cameron nodded faintly.

“I asked her yesterday. She told me to mind my own business. Then she said if I wanted to play basketball this season, I should stop asking questions.””

David closed his eyes for a moment.

He had spent years trying to ensure that Cameron never felt like an outsider in their family. Yet the boy was now sitting beside him, terrified that telling the truth would cost him his mother's approval.

“Listen to me,” David said.

“You are not responsible for what your mother chose to do.””

Cameron swallowed.

“Are you going to make me pay for the uniforms?””

“No.””

“Are you going to kick me out?””

David turned toward him sharply.

“Absolutely not.””

Cameron's face crumpled.

“I didn't want Jasmine to lose her scholarship.””

David placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Then help me make sure she gets it back. That's what matters now.””

Cameron nodded.

They sat quietly for another minute.

Then David asked for the photograph, sent it to his own phone, and told Cameron to keep the original email untouched if he encountered it again.

As David prepared to leave, Cameron grabbed his arm.

“Dad?””

David looked back.

“Mom has been saying something strange lately.””

“What?””

“She keeps telling me that everything is about to change. She says we're going to have a fresh start somewhere new.””

David felt a chill move through him.

“Did she mention a date?””

“Friday.””

Friday.

The same day Jasmine's tuition deposit was due.

David drove home with his hands tight on the steering wheel.

Jessica had spent Jasmine's scholarship money. She had apparently failed to pay the full amount promised to the basketball team. She had transferred thousands of dollars to an unknown recipient and sent an email about a private transfer connected to a move.

And she had told Cameron to keep quiet.

When David reached home, Jessica's SUV was parked in the driveway.

Through the kitchen window, he could see her moving quickly between the counter and the refrigerator, talking on her phone.

He entered through the front door.

Jessica turned at the sound.

Her smile appeared almost instantly.

“David. You're home early.””

He placed his keys on the table.

“I met Cameron.””

Her smile vanished.

“You did what?””

“I met Cameron. He told me what he knows.””

Jessica put down her phone.

“Why would you involve him in this?””

“Because he sent me a message.””

Her face went pale.

For one brief second, David saw something close to panic.

Then Jessica recovered.

“That boy has no idea what he's talking about.””

“Then you'll have no trouble explaining the transfers.””

Jessica's eyes narrowed.

“What transfers?””

David watched her carefully.

“The money that went somewhere other than the uniform supplier.””

She stepped closer.

“David, you're making a terrible mistake.””

“Then help me understand what happened.””

Jessica glanced toward the stairs.

Jasmine was standing halfway down, listening.

Jessica lowered her voice.

“Not here.””

David shook his head.

“No. You've had plenty of opportunities to explain yourself.””

“Please,” she whispered.

“You don't understand the situation.””

“Then explain it.””

Jessica stared at him.

Finally, she said, “I didn't spend the money for myself.””

David's expression hardened.

“Then where is it?””

She opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, David's phone buzzed.

An email had arrived from the bank's fraud department.

*Subject: Urgent Review — Unusual Transfers Identified.*

He opened it.

The message contained a warning that several transactions were under review, including a transfer to an account registered to a company associated with a residential property.

David slowly raised his eyes toward his wife.

“Jessica,” he said, “what exactly were you planning to do on Friday?””

May you like

Her lips parted.

And for the first time, she had no answer.
