Chapter 5: The Memory They Buried
Emma stared at the folder.
She didn't reach for it.
She couldn't.
Her entire body felt frozen.
The words on the cover seemed to pulse in front of her eyes.
*Mother's Mental Evaluation.*
A phrase.
A piece of paper.
A weapon disguised as concern.
"No.""
The word came out before she even realized she had spoken.
Victoria stood at the bottom of the staircase, holding the folder like she had been waiting years for this exact moment.
"You always were quick to reject things you didn't want to believe.""
Adrian stepped forward.
"Give me that.""
Victoria looked at him.
"No.""
His expression darkened.
"Mother.""
The single word carried years of disappointment.
Victoria didn't react.
She looked back at Emma.
"Do you remember the night this was written?""
Emma swallowed.
"No.""
And that was the truth.
She remembered pieces.
Fragments.
A hospital room.
A baby crying.
Someone holding her shoulders.
Someone telling her to calm down.
But the details were missing.
Always missing.
Victoria's smile was small.
"Exactly.""
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Stop.""
"No.""
Victoria's voice sharpened.
"You spent five years blaming me because it was easier than accepting what happened.""
Emma looked at Adrian.
He looked angry.
But not surprised.
That terrified her.
"You knew about this.""
Adrian didn't answer.
Emma's chest tightened.
"You knew.""
"I knew there were records.""
"Not the same thing.""
"I didn't know what was real.""
Victoria gave a quiet laugh.
"Of course you didn't.""
She walked closer.
"Because you wanted to believe she was perfect.""
Emma flinched.
Adrian immediately moved between them.
"Don't talk about her like that.""
Victoria's expression changed.
For a moment, she looked hurt.
Then it disappeared.
"You're still protecting her.""
"Yes.""
The answer came instantly.
No hesitation.
Victoria stared at her son.
"Even after everything?""
Adrian looked at Emma.
Then at Leo.
"Especially after everything.""
The room went silent.
Emma watched the exchange.
Something about it felt wrong.
Not because Adrian was defending her.
Because Victoria wasn't angry enough.
A person who believed they had saved a child wouldn't look this desperate.
She looked like someone trying to prevent a truth from escaping.
Emma finally spoke.
"Give me the folder.""
Victoria looked at her.
"No.""
"Why?""
"Because once you see what's inside, you can't pretend anymore.""
Emma stepped forward.
"I stopped pretending five years ago.""
Her voice shook.
"When my child disappeared, I stopped having that luxury.""
For the first time, Victoria's expression softened.
Almost.
"You don't understand what happened.""
"Then explain.""
Victoria looked at Leo.
The boy was still holding onto Adrian's hand.
Then she looked back at Emma.
"I found you in the hospital hallway.""
Emma frowned.
"What?""
"After the birth.""
The memory came like a flash.
A hallway.
Bare feet.
Cold floor.
A baby crying somewhere.
"I found you screaming.""
Emma's face changed.
"I was looking for my son.""
"Yes.""
Victoria nodded.
"And you were not yourself.""
The words hit hard.
Emma shook her head.
"No.""
"You were exhausted. Injured. Confused.""
"I had just given birth.""
"Exactly.""
Victoria opened the folder.
"I watched doctors try to reason with you.""
Adrian interrupted.
"Enough.""
But Emma didn't look away.
"What did they say?""
Victoria looked at her.
"They said you needed help.""
Emma laughed bitterly.
"Doctors say a lot of things.""
"They documented everything.""
Victoria pulled out a page.
"Your confusion. Your panic. Your refusal to sleep.""
Emma felt her heartbeat increase.
"I was a mother who lost her baby.""
"Yes.""
Victoria's voice became quieter.
"And I was a grandmother who was watching my grandson disappear into chaos.""
Adrian stepped forward.
"You weren't protecting Leo.""
Victoria looked at him.
"You weren't there.""
"I was.""
"No.""
Her voice cut through the room.
"You were a twenty-eight-year-old man who had just found out he had a child. You were angry. Hurt. And obsessed with proving Emma was innocent.""
Emma looked at Adrian.
He didn't deny it.
Victoria continued.
"You didn't see what I saw.""
"What did you see?"" Emma asked.
Victoria looked at her.
"A woman standing over her baby's empty bed, saying she would destroy anyone who kept him from her.""
Emma went still.
Because she remembered saying something like that.
She remembered the rage.
The desperation.
The feeling that she would do anything.
But that wasn't madness.
That was grief.
Victoria watched her face.
"You remember.""
Emma's voice was low.
"I remember being terrified.""
"And I remember being terrified of you.""
Silence.
Leo looked between the adults.
"Why are you all fighting?""
The question broke something.
Emma immediately softened.
She knelt.
"Hey.""
Leo looked at her.
"None of this is your fault.""
The boy nodded slowly.
Adrian crouched beside him.
"Go upstairs for a little bit, okay?""
"But—"
"Please.""
Leo looked reluctant.
Then he walked toward the stairs.
Before leaving, he looked back at Emma.
She gave him a small smile.
Only after he disappeared did Adrian turn back.
"You lied to me.""
Victoria looked at him.
"I protected him.""
"You hid her.""
"Yes.""
The honesty shocked Emma.
Victoria didn't even try to deny it.
"You knew where I was?""
Emma whispered.
Victoria looked at her.
"Yes.""
The answer felt worse than any lie.
Emma stepped back.
"You knew.""
"Yes.""
"You knew I was searching.""
"Yes.""
"You watched me suffer.""
Victoria's face tightened.
"I watched you survive.""
Emma shook her head.
"No.""
Her eyes filled.
"You watched me lose my son.""
A long silence followed.
Then Victoria said something unexpected.
"I'm sorry.""
Emma froze.
The apology sounded real.
And somehow that made it worse.
Because it meant Victoria knew exactly what she had done.
"You don't get to say that.""
"I know.""
"You don't get to take five years from someone and apologize.""
"I know.""
"Then why?""
Victoria looked at Adrian.
Then at Emma.
"Because the truth is more complicated than you think.""
Emma almost laughed.
"Everyone says that when they don't want to admit what they did.""
Victoria pulled out another document.
"This isn't the only evaluation.""
She placed it on the table.
"There was another one.""
Emma stared.
"Another?""
"Yes.""
Victoria looked directly at Adrian.
"And he never saw it.""
Adrian frowned.
"What are you talking about?""
Victoria's voice lowered.
"The evaluation from three months after Leo was born.""
She pushed the paper forward.
"The one that proved someone had manipulated the first report.""
Emma looked at Adrian.
"What?""
He looked genuinely confused.
Victoria continued.
"Someone wanted Emma to look unstable.""
The room went quiet.
"Someone wanted custody of Leo.""
Emma's heart pounded.
"Who?""
Victoria didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she looked toward the window.
At the rain.
At the darkness outside.
Then she whispered:
"The person who destroyed your life wasn't trying to take Leo away from you.""
Emma felt cold.
"Then what were they trying to do?""
Victoria looked at her.
"They were trying to make sure nobody ever discovered who Leo's real father was.""
Adrian went still.
"What?""
Victoria's eyes moved to him.
"You heard me.""
Emma looked between them.
"Adrian is his father.""
Victoria shook her head slowly.
"No.""
A horrible silence filled the room.
Then she said:
"Adrian is not Leo's biological father.""
Emma felt the world shift.
Adrian stared at his mother.
"You're lying.""
Victoria looked at him.
"I wish I was.""
Emma's breath caught.
"No.""
Victoria opened the folder one final time.
Inside was a DNA report.
Five years old.
Still sealed.
Still hidden.
She placed it on the table.
And Adrian saw the name at the top.
His face lost all color.
Because the report wasn't about him.
It was about another man.
A man Emma had never heard of.
A man whose name she read for the first time.
And somehow...
She knew it.
May you like
Because it was the same name written on the hospital bracelet the night Leo was born.
*Daniel Cross.*
