Chapter 2: The Man Who Knew My Secret

The envelope trembled in his hand.

Not because he was weak.

Because he was afraid.

Emma had seen fear in many forms over the last five years.

She had seen doctors avoid difficult conversations. She had seen strangers offer sympathy they didn't understand. She had seen people lower their voices when they told her to stop searching.

But this was different.

This man looked afraid of what would happen if she opened the truth.

"Who are you?"" Emma whispered.

The question sounded simple.

It wasn't.

The man looked at her for a long moment.

Then he glanced around the restaurant.

Too many eyes.

Too many people listening.

"Not here.""

Emma almost laughed.

"Not here?""

Her back burned beneath the torn fabric of her blouse. A paramedic had finally arrived and was trying to examine the cut, but Emma barely noticed.

"You just told me the child I thought I lost for five years is alive.""

Her voice shook.

"You expect me to calmly follow you somewhere else?""

The man didn't flinch.

"My name is Adrian Vale.""

The name meant nothing to Emma.

But everyone else in the restaurant reacted.

A waiter stopped moving.

A woman near the bar whispered something to her husband.

Emma noticed.

"You're famous?""

Adrian gave a humorless smile.

"Not in the way people should want to be.""

Leo tugged on his father's sleeve.

"Dad.""

Adrian looked down immediately.

The cold expression disappeared.

"What is it?""

"Is she my mom?""

The question froze the entire room.

Emma forgot how to breathe.

The paramedic looked away.

The waiters suddenly found reasons to move farther from them.

Adrian closed his eyes briefly.

A man who could face anything in the world looked completely helpless in front of a six-year-old boy.

"Leo...""

The boy stared at Emma.

His little face held the same confusion she felt.

"I heard you say my name.""

Emma swallowed.

"I...""

She couldn't finish.

Because the truth was too big.

Because saying yes meant accepting a miracle.

And saying no meant destroying the only hope she had ever had.

Adrian stepped between them.

"Leo, go with Mr. Carter for a minute.""

The boy looked suspiciously at the older man waiting nearby.

"But—"

"Please.""

Something in Adrian's voice changed.

Leo slowly nodded.

Before leaving, he looked back at Emma.

"Are you coming home with us?""

Emma's heart cracked.

Home.

Such a small word.

Such a painful one.

"I don't know," she whispered.

Leo studied her.

Then he smiled slightly.

A tiny smile.

The kind that made her remember another smile she had never gotten to see.

"Okay.""

Then he walked away.

Emma watched until he disappeared behind the restaurant doors.

Only then did she realize she had been holding her breath.

Adrian remained silent.

Finally, he handed the envelope to her.

"You deserve to read this.""

Emma stared at it.

"From who?""

Adrian didn't answer.

She looked up.

"From who?""

His jaw tightened.

"From the hospital.""

Her fingers went cold.

The envelope felt heavier than it should have.

Five years.

Five years of searching.

Five years of unanswered calls.

Five years of wondering if she had imagined the tiny heartbeat she once heard beneath her own.

She opened it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Her name was written at the top.

EMMA COLLINS.

Below it were words.

Legal language.

Medical terms.

Words designed to hide cruelty behind professionalism.

She read slowly.

Then faster.

Then she stopped.

"No.""

Adrian watched her.

Emma looked up.

"No.""

Her voice became stronger.

"This says I abandoned him.""

Silence.

The pain in her back disappeared.

The pain in her chest was worse.

"You knew about this?""

Adrian looked away.

"I knew about the document.""

"You knew?""

"I didn't know if it was real.""

Emma stood despite the pain.

The paramedic tried to stop her.

"Miss, you need to sit down.""

She ignored him.

"You had this for five years?""

Adrian didn't deny it.

"Why?""

The word came out broken.

"Why would you keep something like this?""

His expression hardened.

"Because when I found Leo, he was three months old and dying.""

Emma went still.

"What?""

Adrian looked at the floor.

"The hospital called me.""

"Why would they call you?""

"Because I was listed as his emergency contact.""

The answer hit her like another piece of glass.

Emma shook her head.

"No.""

Adrian looked at her.

"I was his father.""

The room went silent.

Emma stared.

"No.""

The word barely escaped.

"You were...""

She couldn't finish.

Adrian nodded once.

"Yes.""

The world seemed to move slower.

The man standing in front of her wasn't a stranger.

He wasn't just the person who raised her son.

He was connected to the night everything fell apart.

"You were there.""

Adrian's face changed.

"What?""

"When I gave birth.""

A shadow crossed his eyes.

"Yes.""

"Why don't I remember you?""

The question hurt him.

She saw it.

But she didn't care.

Not anymore.

Because for five years, she had lived with a hole inside her that nobody could explain.

And now the person standing in front of her had answers.

"I was there," Adrian said quietly.

"But not the way you think.""

Emma folded her arms despite the pain.

"Explain.""

Adrian looked at Leo through the glass doors.

The little boy was sitting with an employee, playing with the same red toy car.

The sight softened his face.

Then he looked back at Emma.

"You and I knew each other before that night.""

Emma frowned.

"No.""

"You just don't remember.""

"Why wouldn't I remember?""

Adrian hesitated.

And that hesitation scared her.

"Because someone made sure you wouldn't.""

A cold feeling moved through her.

"What does that mean?""

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he reached into his jacket again.

This time, he pulled out a photograph.

He handed it to her.

Emma took it.

And everything inside her stopped.

It was her.

Five years younger.

Standing outside a hospital.

Holding a newborn baby.

Smiling.

A real smile.

A happy one.

A smile she hadn't seen on her own face since that day.

Her fingers shook.

"Where did you get this?""

Adrian's voice was barely audible.

"I took it.""

Emma looked up sharply.

"You?""

He nodded.

"I was there when Leo was born.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

His eyes filled with something close to regret.

"Because I couldn't.""

"Couldn't?""

"Emma...""

"No.""

Her voice cracked.

"No more excuses.""

She stepped closer.

"You had my son.""

Adrian looked like he wanted to argue.

But he didn't.

"You raised him.""

"I saved him.""

"You replaced me.""

The words landed.

Hard.

Adrian looked away.

For the first time, Emma saw something beneath his confidence.

Guilt.

"I never wanted to replace you.""

"But you did.""

"No.""

His voice became sharper.

"I spent five years telling him stories about you.""

Emma froze.

"What?""

"I told him his mother was brave.""

Her eyes filled.

"I told him she loved him.""

Adrian swallowed.

"I told him she would come back someday.""

The anger inside Emma weakened.

Not disappeared.

Never disappeared.

But weakened.

Because a cruel person would have erased her.

A cruel person would have told Leo she never existed.

Adrian hadn't.

"Why?""

He looked at her.

"Because I knew the truth would come out eventually.""

Emma looked at the hospital document again.

The accusation.

The lie.

The words saying she abandoned her own child.

"Who wrote this?""

Adrian's expression changed.

A door closed behind his eyes.

"The person who took Leo from you.""

Emma felt a chill.

"Who?""

Before Adrian could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face immediately changed.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Recognition.

Emma noticed.

"Who is it?""

Adrian didn't respond.

The phone continued vibrating.

Finally, he answered.

"Hello?""

A few seconds passed.

Then his face turned pale.

"How did you get this number?""

Emma watched him carefully.

The restaurant noise faded away.

Adrian listened.

Then his hand tightened around the phone.

"What did you say?""

A pause.

His eyes moved to Emma.

And suddenly, she knew.

Whoever was calling wasn't talking about the past.

They were talking about now.

Adrian slowly lowered the phone.

"Emma...""

Her stomach dropped.

"What?""

He looked at the envelope in her hand.

Then at Leo.

Then back at her.

"The person who took your son knows you're alive.""

Emma felt every hair on her arms rise.

May you like

"And they're coming for him.""

A second later, every light in the restaurant went out.
