Chapter 4: The Secret Beneath The Floorboards
Emma read the message three times.
She wanted the words to change.
She wanted them to become something else.
A mistake.
A cruel joke.
Anything that didn't mean what she already knew.
But the screen stayed the same.
*You found the mother. Now let's see if she survives losing him again.*
Her fingers went numb.
"Who sent that?""
Adrian took the phone back immediately.
"Someone who wants us afraid.""
"That's not an answer.""
"It is the only answer I have right now.""
Emma stared at him.
"No.""
Her voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
"You don't get to do that anymore.""
Adrian frowned.
"Do what?""
"Protect me with half the truth.""
The words hit him.
She stepped closer.
"For five years, I lived with questions nobody answered.""
Her eyes moved toward Leo.
"And now I finally find him.""
Her voice cracked.
"And you are still trying to decide what I can handle?""
Adrian looked at Leo.
Then back at her.
For a moment, he looked like he wanted to argue.
Instead, he nodded.
"You're right.""
Emma hadn't expected that.
The admission seemed to cost him something.
Adrian lowered his voice.
"There is more.""
"Tell me.""
He glanced around the restaurant.
"Not here.""
Emma almost interrupted.
But then she noticed something.
A man near the entrance.
He wasn't looking at them.
Not directly.
But he had been standing in the same spot for several minutes.
Too still.
Too interested.
Adrian noticed him too.
His expression changed instantly.
"Come with me.""
Emma didn't move.
"Where?""
"Somewhere safe.""
"I don't know you.""
His eyes met hers.
"No.""
A pause.
"But you know my son.""
That stopped her.
Because he was right.
Whatever else Adrian Vale was, he was also the man who had raised Leo.
The man who had protected him.
The man who had kept a place for her in a story where everyone else had erased her.
Adrian walked toward Leo.
"Buddy.""
Leo looked up.
"Are we leaving?""
"Yes.""
The boy grabbed his toy car.
Emma watched him.
She couldn't explain why.
But seeing him hold that small red car made something inside her ache.
A connection.
A thread.
Something that had survived all these years.
Adrian took Leo's hand.
Then he looked at Emma.
"Stay close.""
The three of them left through the back entrance.
Outside, the city was covered in rain.
The kind of rain that blurred everything.
Streetlights.
Cars.
Faces.
Emma stood beneath the restaurant awning, watching Adrian unlock a black SUV.
She hesitated.
Every instinct told her this was impossible.
Too much.
Too sudden.
A stranger.
A missing child.
A hidden family.
A threat.
But then Leo looked at her from the back seat.
And smiled.
A small, innocent smile.
The kind that made every doubt disappear.
Emma got in.
The drive was silent.
Leo sat between them in the back seat, holding his toy car.
Adrian drove with both hands tight on the wheel.
Emma watched him through the mirror.
He looked different now.
Not like a powerful businessman.
Not like someone who controlled every room he entered.
Just a father terrified of losing his child.
Again.
"Where are we going?""
"My house.""
Emma immediately looked at him.
"No.""
Adrian glanced at her.
"It's the safest place.""
"I don't want to go to your house.""
"You don't have to trust me.""
His voice softened.
"But trust this.""
He looked at Leo.
"Nobody gets near him there.""
Emma stayed quiet.
Because she believed him.
And that scared her.
Twenty minutes later, the SUV stopped in front of a large stone house surrounded by tall trees.
It wasn't flashy.
It wasn't what she expected.
No gates.
No security guards.
Just a quiet home.
A family home.
Leo ran inside the moment the door opened.
"Mom?""
Adrian froze.
Emma froze.
The word hung in the air.
Leo looked confused.
"I mean...""
He looked at Emma.
"Sorry.""
Emma felt something break inside her.
"You don't have to apologize.""
Leo looked down.
"My dad said I shouldn't call you that until we know.""
Adrian closed his eyes.
Emma looked at him.
"He said that?""
Adrian nodded.
"I didn't want to confuse you.""
Leo looked between them.
"Are you my mom?""
The question was too heavy for such a small voice.
Emma knelt down.
Her injured back protested, but she ignored it.
She looked directly at him.
"I don't know everything yet.""
Leo listened carefully.
"But I know something.""
"What?""
Emma smiled through tears.
"I have been looking for you for a very long time.""
The boy's expression changed.
Not dramatically.
Just slightly.
Like a missing piece had moved into place.
"Why?""
Emma touched her chest.
"Because I knew someone was missing.""
Leo looked at Adrian.
Then back at her.
"Was it me?""
Emma couldn't speak.
So she nodded.
Leo stepped forward.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like he wasn't sure if he was allowed.
Then he hugged her.
Emma broke.
The world could have ended in that moment and she wouldn't have noticed.
She held him.
Her son.
Her child.
The baby she had lost.
The boy she had imagined every night.
His arms wrapped around her neck.
His heartbeat pressed against her.
And for the first time in five years...
Emma felt whole.
But the moment didn't last.
A sound came from upstairs.
A floorboard creaking.
Adrian instantly pulled away.
His entire body changed.
Protective.
Alert.
"Stay here.""
Emma stood.
"What is it?""
"Nothing.""
She stared at him.
"Don't lie to me.""
Adrian looked toward the staircase.
Then back at her.
"I heard something.""
Leo grabbed his father's hand.
"Is Grandma here?""
The question stopped Adrian.
Emma noticed.
"What?""
Leo looked confused.
"Grandma always comes upstairs when it rains.""
Adrian went completely still.
"What did you say?""
Leo tilted his head.
"Grandma.""
Emma felt cold.
"But you said she left the country.""
Adrian didn't answer.
He slowly looked toward the second floor.
"Leo.""
The boy looked at him.
"When was the last time you saw Grandma?""
Leo thought.
"Yesterday.""
Emma's breath caught.
Adrian's face went pale.
"Yesterday?""
Leo nodded.
"She came into my room.""
"Did she say anything?""
The boy looked at the floor.
"She said I shouldn't tell you.""
A silence fell.
Then Leo whispered:
"She said if Mommy ever came back...""
Emma felt her heart stop.
"What did she say?""
Leo looked at her.
His innocent eyes filled with fear.
"She said Mommy would take me away.""
Adrian moved instantly.
He pulled Leo behind him.
Emma looked upstairs.
At the dark hallway.
At the place where someone had been hiding.
Someone who wasn't supposed to be there.
"Adrian...""
He didn't respond.
His hand moved toward a drawer near the entrance.
Inside was something Emma hadn't expected.
A weapon.
Not pointed at her.
Not threatening.
Ready.
For someone else.
A sound came from above.
A slow step.
Then another.
Emma stared at the staircase.
A woman's voice drifted down.
Calm.
Elegant.
Familiar.
"Adrian.""
He went completely still.
The voice continued.
"I see you finally found her.""
Emma's blood ran cold.
Because she knew that voice.
She had heard it five years ago beside a hospital bed.
A voice that had comforted her.
A voice that had lied to her.
Adrian whispered:
"Victoria.""
The woman stepped into view.
Older.
But unchanged.
Perfectly composed.
Her eyes moved to Emma.
Then to Leo.
Then back to Emma.
And she smiled.
"Hello, Emma.""
Emma couldn't move.
Victoria Vale rested one hand on the staircase railing.
"I was wondering how long it would take you to come looking for your son.""
Leo hid behind Adrian.
Emma stared at the woman who had stolen five years of her life.
And Victoria said the one thing Emma never expected to hear.
"I didn't take Leo from you.""
A pause.
Her smile disappeared.
"I saved him from you.""
Adrian's face hardened.
"Don't.""
Victoria ignored him.
She looked directly at Emma.
"Because before you judge me...""
She reached into her coat and pulled out a small folder.
"...you should see what you did the night Leo was born.""
Emma stared at the folder.
Her hands began to shake.
Because on the cover was a photograph.
A photograph of her.
May you like
And underneath it were three words.
*Mother's Mental Evaluation.*
