Chapter 10: The Truth I Chose To Remember
For a long time, Emma couldn't hear anything.
Not Richard.
Not Adrian.
Not even the sound of the rain against the windows.
There was only one sentence repeating in her mind.
*You forgot what you did.*
She looked at her hands.
The same hands that had held Leo.
The same hands that had protected him from falling glass.
The same hands she had spent years believing were innocent.
Now she wondered.
Had they held something else?
Had they taken something away?
"No.""
The word came quietly.
Then again.
Stronger.
"No.""
Richard watched her carefully.
"Emma.""
"Don't.""
Her voice shook.
"Don't say my name like you know me.""
Richard's expression changed.
"You are my daughter.""
"No.""
She looked at him.
"You were my father.""
The difference hurt.
Even Richard seemed to feel it.
Adrian moved closer.
"Emma.""
She didn't look at him.
"Did you know?""
Adrian's face tightened.
"Know what?""
"That I might have done something?""
The question broke his expression.
"No.""
"Are you sure?""
"Yes.""
The answer was immediate.
"I spent five years searching for the truth.""
Emma looked at him.
"And if the truth was that I hurt Daniel?""
Adrian stepped closer.
"I would still want the truth.""
That answer surprised her.
"Why?""
His voice softened.
"Because Leo deserves the truth.""
A silence followed.
Then Leo spoke.
"Mom?""
Emma turned.
The boy was standing behind Adrian.
Afraid.
Confused.
She immediately went to him.
Kneeling.
"Hey.""
"Are you mad at me?""
The question crushed her.
"No.""
"Because of my dad?""
Emma shook her head.
"No.""
"Because of Grandma?""
"No.""
His eyes filled.
"Because of you?""
Emma froze.
Children saw things adults tried to hide.
She reached for his hand.
"Never.""
Leo looked at her.
"Then why are you crying?""
Emma touched her face.
She hadn't realized she was.
"Because sometimes people lose parts of themselves.""
Leo frowned.
"Like a toy?""
A small, broken smile appeared.
"Yes.""
"Can they find them again?""
Emma looked at him.
"I hope so.""
Leo squeezed her hand.
"I think you can.""
The innocence of that answer almost destroyed her.
Behind them, Richard cleared his throat.
"We need to finish this.""
Adrian turned.
"You don't get to control this anymore.""
Richard looked at him.
"I know.""
The admission surprised everyone.
Richard seemed older suddenly.
Tired.
Not like a villain.
Like a man who had carried a terrible secret too long.
"I made mistakes.""
Emma stood.
"Mistakes?""
Her voice sharpened.
"You manipulated my memories.""
"I did.""
"You separated me from my son.""
"I did.""
"You let me believe he was dead.""
Richard lowered his eyes.
"Yes.""
"How can you say that like it's nothing?""
"I can't.""
For the first time, there was no defense.
No excuse.
Just regret.
"I thought I was saving you.""
Emma shook her head.
"You weren't.""
"I know.""
"You were saving yourself.""
Richard looked at her.
And didn't argue.
That was the first honest thing he had done.
Adrian picked up the evidence photograph.
"Tell us the truth about Daniel.""
Richard sat down slowly.
"The night Daniel died, he was going to release everything.""
"The documents?""
Richard nodded.
"Evidence against powerful people.""
"Who?""
Richard looked at Emma.
"People connected to your family.""
Emma frowned.
"My family?""
Richard nodded.
"Your father was not the only person involved.""
Adrian stared.
"What does that mean?""
"It means Daniel discovered your grandfather's company had been laundering money through charities.""
Emma felt sick.
"My grandfather?""
"Yes.""
Richard looked at her.
"And Daniel discovered I helped hide some of it.""
Silence.
Emma stared.
"You?""
Richard nodded.
"I was scared.""
"Of losing everything?""
"Yes.""
He looked at Leo.
"Until I realized what I was risking.""
Emma understood then.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But understanding.
Richard had not started as a monster.
He had become one decision at a time.
"What happened that night?""
Richard closed his eyes.
"Daniel met you because he knew you had copies of the evidence.""
Emma listened.
"You wanted to expose everyone.""
A pause.
"But someone followed you.""
"Who?""
"We never found out.""
Emma frowned.
"We?""
Richard nodded.
"You, Daniel, and I.""
Adrian looked confused.
"You were there?""
"Yes.""
Richard looked at Emma.
"I arrived after the argument.""
"What argument?""
"Daniel was angry.""
"With me?""
"No.""
Richard shook his head.
"With himself.""
Emma waited.
Richard continued.
"He realized something.""
"What?""
"That the evidence wasn't enough.""
Adrian frowned.
"Why?""
"Because the person who ordered everything wasn't in the documents.""
Richard looked at Emma.
"It was someone close to you.""
Emma felt cold.
"Who?""
Richard didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at Adrian.
"Daniel discovered the truth about Leo's biological father.""
Adrian went still.
Emma's heart raced.
"What truth?""
Richard looked at her.
"The DNA report was altered.""
Everyone froze.
Adrian grabbed the folder.
"What?""
Richard nodded.
"Daniel was not just investigating the Vale family.""
"Then why did the report say he was Leo's father?""
"Because someone wanted Adrian to believe he was responsible.""
Emma stared.
"I don't understand.""
Richard sighed.
"Daniel was the only person who knew the truth.""
"What truth?""
Richard looked toward Leo.
"The man listed as Leo's father wasn't Daniel.""
Emma felt the room disappear.
"Then who?""
Richard reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a final document.
A DNA report.
Different from the one Victoria had shown.
"This is the original.""
Adrian took it.
Read it.
Then looked at Emma.
His expression changed.
"What?""
Emma whispered.
Adrian couldn't speak.
Richard answered.
"The biological father of Leo...""
A pause.
"...was never Daniel.""
Emma felt tears forming.
"Who?""
Richard looked at her.
"Someone you knew.""
The room became silent.
Then Adrian turned the paper around.
Emma read the name.
And everything stopped.
Because the name wasn't Daniel Cross.
It wasn't Adrian Vale.
It wasn't a stranger.
It was someone whose face she had seen every day.
Someone who had protected her.
Someone who had searched with her.
Someone who had raised her son.
Emma looked up.
"No.""
Adrian's eyes filled.
"I didn't know.""
She stared.
The DNA report shook in her hand.
Because the truth was impossible.
The man she believed was only Leo's father in his heart...
Was also his father by blood.
Adrian.
The man who had never known.
Richard had lied.
Victoria had lied.
Everyone had lied.
But the strangest part was not that Adrian was Leo's father.
The strangest part was the memory returning.
A hospital room.
Five years ago.
Daniel holding a folder.
Emma crying.
Adrian standing beside her.
And her own voice:
"If anything happens to me, promise you'll protect him.""
Adrian answering:
"I promise.""
She remembered.
Not everything.
But enough.
The accident.
The lies.
The fear.
Daniel's death.
She looked at Richard.
"You made me forget because you knew.""
Richard looked away.
"Yes.""
"You knew Adrian was his father.""
"Yes.""
"And you thought I couldn't handle the truth.""
"I thought the truth would get you killed.""
Emma looked at Leo.
Then Adrian.
Then the man who had spent five years raising her child.
The man who had loved a son he thought wasn't his.
She walked toward Adrian.
He looked afraid.
"Emma...""
She shook her head.
"I remember now.""
His eyes filled.
"What?""
"The hospital.""
A tear fell.
"You were there.""
Adrian nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
"You promised me.""
"I did.""
Emma looked at Leo.
"You kept him safe.""
Adrian whispered:
"I tried.""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"You did.""
For five years, she had searched for someone to blame.
But the truth was more complicated.
People had failed her.
People had hurt her.
People had lied.
But one person had stayed.
One person had protected the child she lost.
Emma turned toward Leo.
He was watching them.
Waiting.
She opened her arms.
He ran to her.
And Adrian joined them.
For the first time, the three of them stood together.
Not as strangers.
Not as a broken family.
As something new.
Richard watched quietly.
Emma looked at him.
"What happens now?""
Richard nodded.
"I turn myself in.""
She didn't expect that.
"You will?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
He looked at Leo.
"Because he deserves a future without our secrets.""
Months later, the truth finally came out.
The evidence Daniel left behind exposed the crimes hidden for years.
The people responsible faced consequences.
Richard admitted what he had done.
Victoria returned and testified.
And Emma never got back the five years she lost.
Nobody could give those back.
But she got something else.
Mornings with Leo.
School plays.
Bedtime stories.
Small moments she once thought were gone forever.
One evening, years later, Leo found the old red toy car sitting on a shelf.
"Mom?""
Emma looked up.
"Yes?""
"Why did Dad keep this?""
She smiled.
"Because it reminded him of something important.""
"What?""
Emma looked across the room.
Adrian was watching them.
Still the same man.
Still the same protective father.
Still the person who had kept a promise when everyone else broke theirs.
She smiled.
"It reminded him that some things are worth fighting for.""
Leo thought about that.
Then smiled.
"I think he was right.""
Emma looked out the window.
The rain had stopped.
For years, rain meant hospitals.
Loss.
Fear.
But now it meant something else.
A beginning.
Because sometimes the truth doesn't set you free all at once.
Sometimes it breaks you first.
Sometimes it takes everything you thought you knew.
And sometimes...
May you like
The person you thought was part of the mystery
was actually the person who helped you find your way home. :::
