Chapter 8: The Wife Before Me

I didn't sleep that night.
The photograph remained open on my phone until nearly four in the morning.
Marcus stood beside a woman in a white wedding dress, smiling at the camera.
Denise was behind them, wearing a cream-colored outfit and the same gold earrings she had worn to our wedding.
The woman was beautiful.
Dark hair.
Warm smile.
A small necklace resting against her collarbone.
Her name was Evelyn Carter.
I had never heard it.
Not once.
I called Rachel shortly after eight.
"I received something last night.""
"What?""
I sent her the photograph.
She opened it while we were speaking.
"Who is Evelyn?""
"Apparently, Marcus's first wife.""
Rachel was silent.
"Did he ever mention a previous marriage?""
"No.""
"Have you checked his public records?""
"Not yet.""
"Don't contact him about this. Let me investigate.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Rachel, why would someone tell me to ask about his first wife?""
"I don't know. But given what we've already discovered, I don't want to dismiss it.""
I hesitated.
"Could the trust have something to do with her?""
"Possibly.""
Rachel asked me to forward the original photograph, including the sender information.
Then she said she would check the relevant public records and coordinate with the financial investigators.
Before ending the call, she added, "Aaliyah, be prepared for the possibility that the story you've been told about your husband's past is incomplete.""
I looked at the photograph.
I was beginning to suspect that everything about my marriage was incomplete.
At ten-thirty, Vanessa called.
She sounded terrified.
"Have you seen the photograph?""
I sat upright.
"Did you send it?""
"No. Someone must have sent it to you.""
"Who was Evelyn?""
Vanessa sighed.
"Marcus's first wife.""
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
"Because Mom doesn't like discussing her.""
"Why?""
"Because Evelyn left.""
I stared at the wall.
"When?""
"About seven years ago.""
"Did they divorce?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Vanessa was quiet.
Then she said, "Money.""
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
"Explain.""
"Evelyn worked in banking. She was good with finances. Mom brought her into the company after the wedding.""
I remembered Denise's comments about my credit.
My income.
My employment.
"Did Evelyn sign financial documents?""
"Yes.""
"Did she know what she was signing?""
"Not at first.""
My stomach tightened.
"What happened?""
Vanessa took a breath.
"Mom used Evelyn's information for some property financing. Evelyn eventually found out. She confronted Marcus, and they had a huge argument.""
"Then?""
"She left the house.""
"Did she report them?""
"I don't know.""
"Vanessa, don't lie to me.""
"I'm not!""
Her voice cracked.
"All I know is that after she left, Mom said Evelyn had stolen money from the family.""
I looked at the photograph.
"Did you believe her?""
"I was young.""
"You were old enough to know what was happening.""
Vanessa went quiet.
Then she whispered, "I think Evelyn tried to warn someone.""
"Who?""
"Me.""
My throat tightened.
"What did she say?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"She told me never to sign anything Mom gave me.""
I stared at the phone.
"Why didn't you listen?""
"Because I thought she was bitter.""
A long silence followed.
Then Vanessa said something else.
"There's another thing.""
I waited.
"Evelyn had a daughter.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
"She and Marcus had a little girl.""
I gripped the phone.
"Where is she now?""
"I don't know.""
"How old?""
"She would be around eight or nine.""
I felt dizzy.
"Does Marcus have custody?""
"Not that I know of.""
"Does Denise see her?""
Vanessa whispered, "Sometimes.""
I closed my eyes.
"Why?""
"I don't know.""
But I could hear something in Vanessa's voice.
Something she wasn't telling me.
"Vanessa, what are you hiding?""
She started crying.
"Mom told everyone Evelyn abandoned her daughter.""
"And you believed that?""
"I did.""
"Do you still?""
She didn't answer.
I ended the call.
Then I immediately sent Rachel a message explaining everything.
At noon, Rachel called back.
"I found the divorce record.""
"What does it say?""
"Marcus and Evelyn Carter divorced seven years ago. The marriage ended following a contested financial dispute.""
"Was there a child?""
"Yes. A daughter named Lily.""
I sat down.
"Where is she?""
"According to the available records, she lives with her mother.""
"Does Marcus have visitation?""
"There's an arrangement, but it appears to have been modified several times.""
I stared at the table.
"Why would Denise tell people Evelyn abandoned her daughter?""
"I can't answer that. But I found something else.""
Rachel sent me a document.
It was an old court filing.
The document described a dispute over financial accounts and property assets.
Evelyn had alleged that her personal information had been used to secure loans without her knowledge.
My heart began pounding.
"She accused them of the same thing?""
"Yes.""
"What happened?""
"The case was resolved through a settlement. Some claims were withdrawn, and the financial arrangements were restructured.""
"Did she receive money?""
"There's a reference to a settlement payment, but we haven't obtained the complete agreement.""
I looked at the photograph again.
The woman smiling beside Marcus had apparently fought the same battle I was fighting now.
"Rachel, can we contact her?""
"Possibly. I want to approach that carefully. But I found a public contact associated with her current professional records. I'll ask whether she's willing to speak.""
I nodded.
Then I remembered something.
"Did the old court documents mention a trust?""
Rachel paused.
"Actually, yes.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"What kind?""
"A family asset trust.""
I closed my eyes.
The agreement Vanessa had found.
The one created before my wedding.
Rachel continued.
"There's a reference to Evelyn being listed as a beneficiary before the divorce.""
I stared at the ceiling.
"Then what happened?""
"Her interest was apparently removed after the settlement.""
I whispered, "And mine replaced it.""
Rachel didn't answer.
But her silence told me enough.
That afternoon, I received a call from a number I didn't recognize.
A woman spoke.
"Is this Aaliyah Brooks?""
"Yes.""
"My name is Evelyn Carter.""
I sat completely still.
"Hello.""
"I understand you've been asking questions about me.""
I glanced at Olivia.
She had just walked into the room.
I put the call on speaker.
"Yes. Someone sent me a photograph.""
Evelyn exhaled.
"Then I suppose it's time.""
"Time for what?""
"For someone to hear what happened.""
I felt my hands tighten.
"Did Marcus and Denise use your identity for loans?""
There was a long silence.
Then she answered.
"Yes.""
I closed my eyes.
"How much?""
"At the time, around six hundred thousand dollars in combined obligations. Some of it was connected to properties. Some of it was business financing.""
I looked at Olivia.
She covered her mouth.
Evelyn continued.
"They told me it was temporary. They said the family needed help. Marcus said we were building something together.""
I swallowed.
"That's exactly what he told me.""
"I know.""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"Because I saw the financial records after you married him.""
My blood ran cold.
"How?""
"Someone contacted me two years ago. They wanted to know whether I had signed a particular guarantee.""
"Who?""
"An investigator working with a lender.""
I felt a chill.
"Did you tell them?""
"I told them I had never signed it.""
I gripped the phone.
"Was my name on the documents?""
"Yes.""
I closed my eyes.
"How many?""
"Several.""
I couldn't speak.
Evelyn continued.
"I recognized the pattern immediately. The company. The property addresses. The wording of the guarantees.""
"Why didn't you contact me?""
"I tried.""
My heart skipped.
"What?""
"I sent a letter to your house.""
"When?""
"About eighteen months ago.""
I stared at the table.
"I never received it.""
"I know. It was returned.""
"Why?""
"Someone had written that you no longer lived there.""
I frowned.
"But I did.""
Evelyn sighed.
"Then someone was intercepting your mail.""
I felt sick.
Olivia moved closer.
"Ask her about the trust," she whispered.
I repeated the question.
"Did you know about the family trust?""
Evelyn's voice became colder.
"Yes.""
"What was it?""
"It was supposed to protect the family's properties. But it also created a structure where the debt could be attached to one person while the assets remained under Denise's control.""
I looked at the documents.
"That's what they're trying to do to me.""
"Exactly.""
I felt tears forming.
"Why would Marcus marry me if he already knew this was happening?""
Evelyn didn't answer immediately.
Then she said something that broke whatever remained of my trust in him.
"Because after I left, Denise needed another person with good credit.""
I covered my mouth.
Evelyn continued.
"I don't know what Marcus felt for you. I can't tell you that. But I can tell you what Denise told me before I walked out.""
"What?""
"She said I was too independent to be useful to the family.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"Useful.""
"Yes.""
A long silence followed.
Then Evelyn said, "Aaliyah, I need you to understand something. Denise doesn't think of family the way you do.""
I stared at the floor.
"What do you mean?""
"She thinks family means ownership. If she feeds you, helps you, gives you a place to stay, she believes you owe her obedience.""
I remembered the recipe cards.
The instructions.
The dishes.
The constant criticism.
"Did she treat you like that too?""
Evelyn laughed sadly.
"Worse.""
I waited.
"She once made me cook dinner for twenty-three people while I was recovering from surgery.""
I closed my eyes.
"Why didn't Marcus help?""
"Because Marcus was raised to believe that his mother's needs came first.""
I felt tears slip down my cheeks.
The story was repeating itself.
Different woman.
Same house.
Same demands.
Same excuses.
Then Evelyn said, "But there's something you need to know about Lily.""
I wiped my face.
"What?""
"She remembers everything.""
I sat upright.
"Everything about what?""
"About the day Denise told me I had to sign the trust documents.""
I swallowed.
"How old was she?""
"She was three.""
"She was there?""
"Yes.""
Evelyn's voice trembled.
"She was sitting in the living room when Denise put the papers on the table. Lily heard her grandmother say that if I didn't cooperate, she would make sure I never saw my daughter again.""
I felt a wave of anger.
"That's horrible.""
"It was.""
"Where is Lily now?""
"She's with me.""
"Does she know what happened?""
"Some of it. Not everything.""
I hesitated.
"Would she be willing to talk?""
"Not yet. She's still young.""
I nodded, even though Evelyn couldn't see me.
Then she said, "But I have something that might help you.""
"What?""
"An audio recording.""
My heart started beating faster.
"What recording?""
"The conversation I had with Denise after I discovered the financial documents.""
I stared at the phone.
"Do you still have it?""
"Yes.""
"What's on it?""
Evelyn took a breath.
"Denise admits that she knew the signatures weren't mine.""
I felt my knees weaken.
"She admits it?""
"Yes.""
"And Marcus?""
Evelyn went quiet.
"Marcus was there.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did he say anything?""
"Yes.""
"What?""
Evelyn's answer came softly.
"He told her to make sure I never found out where the money went.""
Rachel arranged a secure meeting with Evelyn the following day.
She arrived at the office carrying a small external drive and a thick folder.
She was thinner than she looked in the wedding photograph.
Her hair was shorter.
But her eyes were steady.
When she saw me, she stopped.
For a moment, we simply looked at each other.
Then she said, "I'm sorry.""
I shook my head.
"You don't owe me an apology.""
She gave me a sad smile.
"I know what you're going through.""
Rachel invited us into the conference room.
Evelyn placed the drive on the table.
"This contains the original recording.""
Rachel asked whether Evelyn was willing to provide a statement about its origin and circumstances.
"Yes.""
She opened the folder.
Inside were old financial statements, correspondence with the lender, and copies of several disputed documents.
One page caught my attention.
It was a copy of the original family trust agreement.
The same agreement I had seen in Vanessa's photograph.
But this version had additional pages.
Rachel turned to the beneficiary section.
There were three names.
Denise Carter.
Marcus Carter.
Evelyn Carter.
I stared.
"Was this the original trust?""
"Yes," Evelyn said.
Rachel examined the signature page.
"Did you sign this?""
"No.""
I looked at her.
"Then why is your name there?""
"Because Denise told the attorney I had agreed.""
I felt cold.
"Which attorney?""
Evelyn pointed to the bottom of the page.
Gerald Whitmore.
Rachel's expression hardened.
"Same attorney.""
Evelyn nodded.
"Yes.""
Rachel connected the drive to her laptop.
The recording began.
A woman's voice filled the room.
Denise.
Her tone was unmistakable.
You need to understand that this is how the family works.
Then Evelyn's voice.
You used my information without telling me.
Denise laughed.
We were protecting the family.
You forged my signature.
A pause.
Then Denise said something that made my entire body go cold.
I didn't forge anything. Gerald handled the paperwork. Marcus gave him what he needed.
Evelyn's voice trembled.
Marcus knew?
Denise answered without hesitation.
Of course he knew.
I looked at Rachel.
She had stopped typing.
The recording continued.
Then Marcus's voice appeared.
Mom, just tell her what she needs to hear. We can't have her walking away now.
Evelyn asked, What do you mean?
Marcus replied.
If you leave, the guarantees become a problem.
There was a pause.
Then Denise spoke.
That's why we need to finish the trust before she starts asking questions.
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
For several seconds, the only sound was the air conditioner.
Rachel slowly closed her laptop.
"That recording needs to be preserved and independently authenticated.""
Evelyn nodded.
"I know.""
I stared at the table.
Marcus's voice.
His words.
The same man who had once promised to build a life with me.
He hadn't simply failed to protect me.
He had helped plan the deception.
I felt something inside me finally settle.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Something colder.
Certainty.
Then Rachel opened the folder Evelyn had brought.
"There is one final document I want to review.""
She turned to the last page.
Her expression changed.
"What is it?"" I asked.
She read the heading aloud.
*Trust Amendment and Beneficiary Transfer.*
The date was three weeks before my wedding.
Beneath it were the names of the people involved.
Denise Carter.
Marcus Carter.
Gerald Whitmore.
And one final name.
Evelyn Carter.
Rachel looked up.
"Evelyn, did you ever sign an amendment removing yourself as the primary beneficiary?""
"No.""
Rachel turned the page.
A signature appeared.
It was supposedly Evelyn's.
But beneath it was a second signature.
Mine.
I stared.
My name was listed as the replacement beneficiary.
The document had been created before Marcus and I were married.
Before he proposed.
Before Denise gave me my first recipe card.
Before I ever stepped into that house.
I whispered, "They had already chosen me.""
Evelyn nodded.
"Yes.""
Rachel examined the document more closely.
Then she pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.
"Wait.""
She read it again.
"There's a condition attached to this transfer.""
I leaned forward.
"What condition?""
Rachel looked at both of us.
"The beneficiary would only receive the trust assets after the previous beneficiary's legal interest was terminated.""
Evelyn went pale.
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Evelyn looked at me.
Then she whispered:
"It means they were waiting for my divorce to be finalized before they could put you in my place.""
I stared at the page.
But Rachel wasn't finished.
She turned to the final paragraph.
And when she read it, her voice became very quiet.
"There's also a provision stating that if the new beneficiary disputes the financial arrangements, the trustee may immediately revoke her interest and transfer the assets to the secondary beneficiary.""
I looked at the names.
Marcus was the secondary beneficiary.
I felt my blood run cold.
They had planned for this too.
If I cooperated, they could use my name.
If I refused, they could remove me from the trust and leave me exposed to the debts.
I looked at Evelyn.
"How did you escape?""
She held my gaze.
"I didn't.""
She placed another document on the table.
A court order.
Then she said:
"I lost everything they put in my name. But I kept one thing Denise never knew I had.""
Rachel looked up.
"What?""
Evelyn opened the final page.
A handwritten account number appeared beside a bank stamp.
"Proof of where the original trust money went.""
I leaned forward.
"Where?""
Evelyn looked directly at me.
"Into an account controlled by Gerald Whitmore.""
May you like
And suddenly, the lawyer who had helped Denise build the entire arrangement was no longer just a witness to the fraud.
He might have been the person who profited most from it.
