Chapter 7: The Lawyer Who Knew Too Much

For the first time since leaving Marcus, I was genuinely afraid.

Not of Denise.

Not of Marcus.

Not even of the million dollars in disputed debt.

I was afraid because the person who had supposedly helped protect their interests was an attorney, someone who understood exactly what those documents meant.

And apparently, that person had helped submit my identity information without my knowledge.

"Rachel, are you certain?"" I asked.

"I'm looking at the electronic submission records right now.""

"What's his name?""

"Gerald Whitmore.""

The name meant nothing to me at first.

Then I remembered a tall man with silver hair who had attended our wedding reception.

He had stood beside Denise, holding a glass of champagne, and congratulated Marcus on marrying a wonderful woman.

Denise had introduced him as a family attorney.

"He's been representing them for years," I whispered.

Rachel was quiet for a moment.

"That may explain his involvement, but it doesn't establish misconduct by itself. We need to examine what he submitted and under whose instructions.""

"Can he be held responsible?""

"If the evidence establishes that he knowingly participated in fraudulent activity, there may be serious professional and legal consequences. But we're not going to jump ahead.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"What's our next step?""

"Obtain the original records. Preserve everything. And do not communicate with him directly.""

I agreed.

Then Rachel said something else.

"There's also a meeting scheduled tomorrow with the investors.""

I looked at the clock.

"Marcus told me.""

"Denise has apparently invited you to attend.""

"She wants me to tell everyone I approved the financing.""

"I suspected as much.""

I laughed without humor.

"She's not even trying to hide it anymore.""

"Actually, Aaliyah, she may be trying to create evidence. If you attend and make a statement that contradicts the documents, she could later claim you acknowledged your involvement.""

"So I shouldn't go?""

Rachel considered it.

"I didn't say that. I said we need to be careful. If you attend, you should have legal representation and make no statements about the disputed transactions without advice.""

I looked at the photograph Vanessa had sent.

The folder.

My identification.

The handwritten note describing my credit as excellent.

"Rachel?""

"Yes?""

"I want to go.""

There was a pause.

"Why?""

"Because I'm tired of letting Denise tell everyone what I did.""

Rachel exhaled.

"Then we'll prepare properly.""

The next morning, I arrived at Rachel's office at eight.

She had already assembled a file containing the bank records, disputed signatures, property documents, and electronic submission history.

A young associate named Michael joined us.

He specialized in financial investigations and had spent the previous evening reviewing the lender's preliminary findings.

He placed a printed report on the table.

"Ms. Brooks, we found something important.""

I leaned forward.

"What?""

"Your identity documents were uploaded from an account associated with Whitmore Legal Services.""

I stared at him.

"Denise's attorney?""

"Yes.""

"Does that mean he uploaded them himself?""

"Not necessarily. We can identify the account and the device information, but we still need to establish who was operating it.""

Rachel pointed to a line in the report.

"Look at the timestamp.""

I read it.

The documents had been uploaded at 9:18 p.m.

On the night Marcus and I had hosted Denise for dinner.

I remembered that evening.

Denise had brought a bottle of wine and spent almost an hour complaining about the family's financial situation.

Marcus had gone upstairs to take a phone call.

I had cleared the dining table.

And Gerald Whitmore had been sitting in the living room with Denise.

I remembered seeing him open a laptop.

At the time, I thought he was checking emails.

Now I wondered whether he had been uploading copies of my identification while I washed the dishes.

Michael placed another document on the table.

"This is an internal note attached to the financing application.""

I read it.

Client confirms prospective guarantor is aware of family arrangement. Final authorization to follow.

I looked at Rachel.

"Who wrote that?""

"The system attributes the note to the legal account. We don't yet know the individual author.""

My fingers tightened around the paper.

"Prospective guarantor.""

I had been married to Marcus for more than a year at that point.

They weren't treating me as his wife.

They were treating me as an available financial instrument.

Rachel closed the folder.

"One more thing. The investor meeting is scheduled for two this afternoon. We have confirmation that Denise expects you to attend.""

"How did you find that out?""

"Vanessa forwarded the invitation.""

I looked at my phone.

There was a message from Vanessa.

*Vanessa:* Mom says everyone needs to see you take responsibility. Please don't let her make you say anything.

I typed a response.

*Aaliyah:* I'm not taking responsibility for something I didn't do.

Then I put my phone away.

At 1:55 p.m., I walked into the conference room of Carter Family Holdings.

The office was located in a glass building in downtown Atlanta.

A receptionist led me down a hallway lined with framed photographs of properties.

Denise was standing near the conference table.

She wore a tailored navy suit, pearl earrings, and the same confident smile she always used when pretending everything was under control.

Marcus stood beside her.

He looked exhausted.

When he saw me, he straightened.

"Aaliyah.""

I nodded.

"Marcus.""

Denise approached.

"Sweetheart, I'm glad you've finally come to your senses.""

I didn't respond.

She glanced at Rachel.

"And you've brought a lawyer.""

Rachel smiled politely.

"That's generally advisable when financial liabilities are being discussed.""

Denise's smile tightened.

"We're family. We don't need to make everything so formal.""

Rachel placed her briefcase on the table.

"Then this should be a very easy meeting.""

Several people were already seated.

I recognized one man from the lender's documents.

Daniel Reeves.

Beside him sat two investors and a woman who introduced herself as the company's external accountant.

Gerald Whitmore stood near the window.

He was exactly as I remembered him.

Silver hair.

Expensive watch.

Perfectly pressed suit.

He looked at me and smiled.

"Mrs. Carter. It's been a while.""

I corrected him.

"Ms. Brooks.""

His smile disappeared for a fraction of a second.

Then he extended his hand.

"Of course.""

I didn't shake it.

Denise gestured toward an empty chair.

"Sit down, dear.""

I took the seat beside Rachel.

Marcus leaned toward me.

"Please don't make this worse.""

I looked at him.

"Then tell the truth.""

He turned away.

The meeting began with Denise explaining the company's financial difficulties.

She spoke about delayed payments, unexpected expenses, and temporary cash-flow problems.

She described the properties as successful investments that had simply encountered market challenges.

I listened quietly.

Then she turned toward me.

"Of course, part of our difficulty came from some misunderstandings within the family.""

I raised my eyes.

Denise continued.

"Aaliyah was supposed to help with certain financial arrangements. Unfortunately, she has become upset and withdrawn her cooperation.""

The accountant looked down at her notes.

One of the investors frowned.

Rachel placed a hand on the table.

"Before this meeting continues, we need to clarify that Ms. Brooks disputes the authenticity of several documents and denies authorizing any guarantees.""

Denise's smile vanished.

"Rachel, this is a family matter.""

"No. These are commercial financing documents.""

Gerald stepped forward.

"Perhaps we should allow Denise to explain.""

Rachel looked at him.

"Certainly. But first, I would like to ask you a question.""

He adjusted his jacket.

"Go ahead.""

"Did your office upload Ms. Brooks's identification documents to the lender's application system?""

Gerald looked briefly at Denise.

Then he answered.

"My office handled administrative matters for the company.""

"That's not what I asked.""

His expression hardened.

"I would need to review the specific records.""

Michael, who had accompanied us, opened a folder.

"We have the submission records here.""

He placed a copy on the table.

Gerald glanced at it.

Then looked away.

Denise immediately intervened.

"Those documents were provided with Aaliyah's consent.""

I turned toward her.

"When did I give you consent?""

"You knew about the business arrangements.""

"No, I didn't.""

"You signed the paperwork.""

"I didn't sign the guarantee.""

Denise gave a short, irritated laugh.

"Don't be ridiculous.""

Rachel slid the disputed signature page across the table.

"Then perhaps you can explain this signature.""

Denise barely glanced at it.

"That's Aaliyah's signature.""

I leaned forward.

"No, it isn't.""

Gerald cleared his throat.

"We shouldn't be making allegations without a proper forensic examination.""

Rachel nodded.

"Agreed. Which is why we have requested one.""

The accountant finally looked up.

"Is there a possibility that the documents were submitted without Ms. Brooks's authorization?""

The room became silent.

Denise's face reddened.

"Absolutely not.""

I looked at the accountant.

"Would you like to see the account opened in my name?""

Rachel placed another document on the table.

"Or the records showing transfers from the company into that account?""

One investor picked up the pages.

He read them slowly.

Then he turned toward Denise.

"Why was there a personal account under Aaliyah's name?""

Denise folded her arms.

"It was part of the restructuring.""

"Who authorized it?""

"Marcus handled that.""

Every head turned toward my husband.

Marcus looked as though someone had pulled the floor from beneath him.

"Mom...""

Denise continued.

"He was responsible for the family finances.""

I stared at him.

He didn't look at me.

Then the investor asked, "Did your wife authorize the account?""

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

"I thought she knew.""

Rachel spoke immediately.

"That's not an answer.""

Gerald stepped in.

"Perhaps we should adjourn until the documentation has been reviewed.""

But the investor wasn't finished.

"Mr. Carter, did you personally submit these financing applications?""

Marcus looked toward his mother.

Denise gave him a warning glance.

He swallowed.

"Yes.""

"And did Ms. Brooks sign the guarantees?""

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"I don't know.""

I almost laughed.

Three years of marriage.

Hundreds of conversations.

A shared home.

And suddenly he didn't know whether his wife had signed documents worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Rachel stood.

"Then I suggest we adjourn until the original records are produced.""

Denise slammed her palm against the table.

"This is absurd!""

Everyone turned toward her.

She pointed at me.

"She has destroyed this family over a few financial misunderstandings and a pile of dirty dishes!""

I slowly stood.

"No, Denise.""

My voice was calm.

"You destroyed your own family when you decided my identity belonged to you.""

For the first time, nobody laughed.

As we walked toward the elevators, Marcus caught up with me.

"Aaliyah, wait.""

Rachel continued ahead.

I stopped.

"What?""

He looked toward the conference room.

"Can we talk privately?""

"No.""

"Please.""

I turned toward him.

"You had three years to talk to me.""

He lowered his voice.

"I didn't know Mom would take it this far.""

I stared at him.

"You watched her practice my signature.""

His face changed.

"I never saw her do that.""

"Vanessa did.""

He looked away.

"Vanessa doesn't understand everything.""

"Then explain it to me.""

He rubbed his face.

"Mom said she needed help. The company was struggling. She promised everything would be repaid.""

"And the house?""

"We were going to fix the deed.""

"The Marietta property?""

"That was supposed to be temporary.""

"The account in my name?""

He didn't answer.

I took a breath.

"Marcus, did you ever love me?""

His eyes filled with tears.

"Of course I did.""

"Then why did you do this?""

He stepped closer.

"Because I thought I could fix everything before you found out.""

I looked at him.

"You thought you could make me responsible for a million dollars in debt and then tell me after everything was settled?""

"That's not what I wanted.""

"Then what did you want?""

He opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, a voice came from behind us.

"Marcus!""

Denise hurried toward the elevator.

Her face was pale.

"Get off the phone and come back inside.""

Marcus looked at her.

"Mom, I'm talking to Aaliyah.""

Denise grabbed his arm.

"We have a problem.""

He frowned.

"What problem?""

She glanced at me.

Then lowered her voice.

"The bank has frozen the property accounts.""

Marcus went still.

"What?""

"The Marietta account. The Decatur account. Everything.""

His face drained of color.

Then Denise looked directly at me.

"This is your fault.""

I shook my head.

"No, Denise. It's the consequence of what you did.""

She stepped closer.

"You have no idea what you've triggered.""

I held her gaze.

"Then explain it.""

She leaned toward me.

And whispered something I would never forget.

"If those accounts are frozen, the people who trusted me will come after everyone. Including you.""

I stared at her.

"Why would they come after me?""

Denise's eyes flickered.

For the first time, she looked genuinely frightened.

"Because you don't know where the rest of the money went.""

Before I could ask another question, her phone rang.

She answered.

Listened.

Then dropped into the nearest chair.

Marcus grabbed her shoulder.

"Mom?""

She looked up at him.

Her voice was barely audible.

"They found the missing account.""

That evening, Rachel called.

"The lender has escalated the investigation.""

"What happened?""

"They identified another transfer destination connected to the disputed transactions.""

"Where?""

"An overseas financial institution.""

I sat down.

"How much?""

"Approximately $410,000.""

My mouth went dry.

"Four hundred and ten thousand dollars?""

"Yes.""

"Who owns the account?""

Rachel paused.

"That's the problem.""

She sent me a document.

I opened it.

The account beneficiary was listed as a private holding company.

But the authorized signatory was an individual.

I read the name.

Then read it again.

*Marcus Carter.*

My husband hadn't simply helped his mother move money.

He had his own account.

And according to the records, the transfers began before the Marietta property was purchased.

I felt my hands go cold.

"Rachel, does Denise know?""

"She may.""

"Does Vanessa?""

"We don't know.""

I looked at the document.

Then another line caught my attention.

The account had been created using a passport number.

A passport belonging to someone else.

Someone whose name I recognized from the family photographs.

I whispered it.

"Patricia Williams.""

Rachel was silent.

Then she said, "Aaliyah, I need you to listen carefully.""

"What?""

"The aunt who attended that dinner at your house may have been more involved than we originally thought.""

I looked toward the kitchen.

For some reason, I could still hear Denise's voice from that Friday night.

Could you wash those dishes for us?

I remembered Patricia pouring sweet tea.

I remembered her shaking her head when I refused.

And now I wondered what she had been doing while everyone else was laughing.

Rachel continued.

"We've also discovered a document that appears to connect the overseas account to the original family trust agreement.""

"What document?""

"A beneficiary designation.""

"Whose name is on it?""

She took a breath.

"Yours.""

I froze.

"Mine?""

"Yes.""

I looked at the paper.

My name appeared beneath a heading labeled Primary Beneficiary.

But there was another line.

*Secondary Beneficiary: Marcus Carter.*

I couldn't understand it.

If the money belonged to me, why was Marcus listed as the secondary beneficiary?

And why had I never heard of the account?

Then Rachel said something that made everything even worse.

"There's a date attached to the beneficiary designation.""

"What date?""

"The day before your wedding.""

My blood ran cold.

The agreement created before I married Marcus.

The financial accounts opened afterward.

The properties purchased using my information.

The signatures I had never made.

It was all connected.

And now I knew why Denise had been so determined to keep me in that house.

She hadn't just wanted a daughter-in-law who cooked and cleaned.

She had wanted someone who would never question the family business.

Someone whose name could be placed on documents while everyone else controlled the money.

But I still didn't understand one thing.

Why had they made me the primary beneficiary of an account I had never known existed?

And what had they planned to do with the money?

I was about to ask Rachel when another notification appeared.

It was from Vanessa.

*Vanessa:* Mom just found out I've been helping you. She's furious.

Then another message arrived.

*Vanessa:* She's going to the bank tomorrow. She says she's going to withdraw everything before they can stop her.

I immediately called Rachel.

She answered.

"What's happening?""

I read the message aloud.

Rachel became silent.

Then she said, "Aaliyah, don't respond to Vanessa yet.""

"Why?""

"Because if Denise is planning to move money, we need to alert the investigators immediately.""

I looked at the clock.

9:47 p.m.

My phone vibrated again.

This time, the message came from an unknown number.

There was no greeting.

No explanation.

Just one sentence.

*If you want to know why your name was placed on that trust, ask what happened to Marcus's first wife.*

I stared at the screen.

Marcus had never told me he had been married before.

Not once.

I immediately called Rachel.

But before she answered, another message arrived.

It contained an old photograph.

A young woman stood beside Marcus at what looked like a wedding reception.

She wore a white dress.

Marcus had his arm around her waist.

And behind them, smiling proudly, stood Denise.

I zoomed in on the woman's face.

Then I read the name written beneath the photograph.

*Evelyn Carter.*

My husband had apparently been married before.

May you like

And suddenly, I wondered whether I had been the first woman Denise had tried to turn into an asset.

Or simply the second.
