Chapter 6: The Agreement Signed Before I Became His Wife

I couldn't stop staring at the date.

Six months before my wedding.

Six months before Marcus proposed.

Six months before I moved into his apartment.

Someone had already created a document involving my name.

I enlarged the photograph Vanessa had sent.

The heading read:

*CARTER FAMILY ASSET PROTECTION AGREEMENT.*

The first page described a private financial arrangement involving several properties, business interests, and personal guarantees.

I didn't understand all the terminology.

But I understood the names.

Denise Carter.

Marcus Carter.

Vanessa Carter.

Aaliyah Brooks.

I had never heard of this agreement.

I had never signed it.

And according to the date, I hadn't even become part of their family.

I called Vanessa.

She answered immediately.

"Did you see it?""

"Yes. Where did you find it?""

"On Mom's computer.""

"Why was my name on a document created before I married Marcus?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"Because Mom had already chosen you.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"She knew Marcus was going to propose.""

I stared at the screen.

"How?""

"Marcus told her. He showed her your photograph and talked about buying a house together.""

I swallowed.

"That still doesn't explain the agreement.""

Vanessa exhaled.

"Mom wanted everything organized before you got married. She said it was easier to bring someone into the family when the financial arrangements were already in place.""

I felt sick.

"Financial arrangements?""

"She said it was about protecting the family assets.""

"From me?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

I looked at the document again.

There was a section labeled Future Spouse Participation.

My name appeared beneath it.

A paragraph stated that a future spouse could be included as a guarantor in certain transactions after marriage, subject to appropriate authorization.

I read it twice.

Then I asked, "Did Marcus know about this?""

"Yes.""

"Before he proposed?""

"Yes.""

My throat tightened.

"So when he told me he wanted to build a life with me...""

Vanessa interrupted quietly.

"He did love you, Aaliyah.""

I laughed.

"Don't.""

"I'm not defending him.""

"Then don't tell me he loved me while you're explaining how he planned to use my identity before I even became his wife.""

She went quiet.

I could hear her breathing.

Finally, she said, "Mom told Marcus you had a good salary and excellent credit.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The missing piece.

My income.

My credit.

My financial history.

I had spent years believing Marcus fell in love with me because I was funny, independent, and determined.

But Denise had been evaluating something else.

My financial profile.

I ended the call.

The next morning, Rachel examined the photograph.

She enlarged the document and read every section.

"This is not an executed agreement," she said.

"How can you tell?""

"There's no complete signature page, no evidence that you agreed to it, and no indication that it was properly finalized.""

I nodded.

"But why create it?""

"That is what we're trying to establish.""

Rachel placed the document beside the loan guarantee.

"Notice something?""

I looked.

"The wording?""

"Exactly. The language about future spouse participation is similar to the wording in the later financing documents.""

She opened another file.

"Whoever prepared these documents appears to have been working from an established template.""

I felt cold.

"So they planned this?""

"That's a possibility. But we need the original electronic files and records showing who created and modified them.""

I leaned forward.

"Can we get those?""

"We can request them through the appropriate legal process. Vanessa may also be able to provide copies if she has legitimate access to the files.""

I nodded.

Then I asked, "What about the account in my name?""

Rachel opened the bank records.

"We've already contacted the financial institution. The account was opened online using your personal information.""

"Who opened it?""

"The bank is investigating.""

"Can they tell us?""

"They will need to verify the account-opening records. We have requested them.""

I looked down.

The amount deposited into the account was $48,000.

The money had arrived in six separate transfers.

Some came from Carter Family Holdings.

Others came from an account associated with Southern Crest Development.

I remembered the company name from the suspicious renovation payment.

"Rachel, could that be connected to the Marietta property?""

"It could be. The timing is similar.""

She clicked on another page.

"There's something else.""

The account had been opened twenty-six months earlier.

Twenty-six months.

That was less than a year after my wedding.

The first deposit had been made just eleven days after Marcus told me we needed to reduce our household spending.

I stared at the screen.

"What happened to the money?""

Rachel scrolled down.

"Most of it was transferred to an investment account.""

"Whose investment account?""

She read the beneficiary details.

"An account registered to Carter Family Holdings.""

I sat back.

They had used my identity to open an account, moved money through it, and transferred the funds into the family company.

I felt as though someone had reached inside my life and rearranged everything.

"Can I get the money back?""

"Potentially. But first we need to establish ownership, the source of the funds, and the circumstances of the transfers.""

I nodded.

Rachel closed the laptop.

"There's one thing I want you to do before we proceed.""

"What?""

"Write down everything Marcus ever asked you to sign.""

I looked at her.

"Everything?""

"Every document you remember. Even if it seemed insignificant.""

I opened my notebook.

And began.

By lunchtime, I had remembered seven occasions.

A refinancing packet.

An insurance form.

A business registration.

A supposed renovation estimate.

A document for a vehicle purchase.

A bank authorization.

And a stack of papers Marcus had brought home one Sunday afternoon.

I remembered that last occasion particularly well.

We had been sitting at the kitchen island.

Marcus had placed a thick folder beside my laptop.

"Can you sign these?""

I had looked at the first page.

"What are they?""

"Business documents.""

"For what?""

"Mom's company.""

I had frowned.

"Why do you need my signature?""

"Because the bank wants household information.""

"Then why isn't your information enough?""

He had kissed the top of my head.

"Baby, don't make this complicated. I already checked everything.""

I remembered feeling irritated.

I had been preparing a presentation for work.

I wanted to finish.

So I signed where he pointed.

I hadn't read the remaining pages.

At the time, it had seemed like an ordinary favor.

Now it felt like the moment I had handed someone a key to my financial life.

I wrote the memory down.

Then another detail surfaced.

"Rachel?""

"Yes?""

"I remember Denise asking me for a copy of my driver's license.""

"Why?""

"She said she wanted to add me to the family insurance records.""

"When?""

"About two months after the wedding.""

Rachel wrote it down.

"Did she return the copy?""

I shook my head.

"I don't remember.""

Rachel looked at me.

"Did she ask for anything else?""

I thought carefully.

"My Social Security number. She said it was for tax records connected to the family business.""

Rachel stopped writing.

"Did you provide it?""

"Yes.""

She nodded slowly.

"That information may explain how someone could have opened the account.""

I looked at her.

"So Denise had everything she needed.""

"Potentially.""

I rubbed my forehead.

For years, I had believed Denise's questions were intrusive because she wanted to control my household.

Now I was wondering whether they had been gathering information for an entirely different purpose.

At 4:20 p.m., Vanessa sent another message.

*Vanessa:* I found the folder.

I immediately called her.

"What folder?""

"The one with everyone's identification.""

"Where is it?""

"On Mom's old laptop. She keeps it in the upstairs office.""

My heart started beating faster.

"Can you send me a photograph?""

"I already did.""

A new image appeared.

It showed a folder containing scanned copies of driver's licenses, tax documents, and financial forms.

I recognized my own driver's license.

My photograph.

My address.

My date of birth.

Beneath it were copies of documents belonging to Marcus, Vanessa, and Patricia.

There were also several pages with handwritten notes.

One line caught my attention.

*A. Brooks — excellent credit, stable income, low existing debt.*

I felt my throat close.

Below that was another note.

*Marriage expected. Add to future financing structure after closing.*

I stared at the screen.

Marriage expected.

Not a wedding.

Not a life.

A financial structure.

I called Vanessa again.

"Did you take these photographs yourself?""

"Yes.""

"Can you preserve the original files?""

"I can try.""

"Don't delete anything.""

"I know.""

She hesitated.

Then she said, "There's something else you should know.""

I closed my eyes.

"What now?""

"Mom has been telling people you agreed to help with the properties.""

"Which people?""

"Some of the investors.""

I frowned.

"Investors?""

"She told them you were Marcus's financial partner.""

I almost laughed.

"His financial partner?""

"She said you were involved in the company.""

I shook my head.

"I have never worked for that company.""

"I know.""

"Then why would she say that?""

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"Because she needed them to believe you were responsible for some of the guarantees.""

I felt a chill.

"Responsible for what?""

"The loans.""

I sat down.

"Vanessa, how much debt is there?""

"I don't know.""

"Give me a number.""

She took a breath.

"Mom told Marcus that the total outstanding debt across the properties was close to $1.2 million.""

The room seemed to tilt.

One point two million dollars.

I looked at the documents in front of me.

The $240,000 guarantee.

The Marietta property.

The Decatur property.

The mysterious trust account.

The transfers from our joint savings.

It was much bigger than I had imagined.

"Did Marcus know about the total debt?""

"Yes.""

"Did he tell you?""

"He told me Mom was in trouble and needed help.""

I gripped the phone.

"Did he tell you they were using my name?""

She whispered, "Yes.""

I ended the call.

Not because I had nothing left to say.

Because I suddenly understood that I had been living with two versions of my husband.

The man who brought me coffee before work.

And the man who had apparently watched his mother build a financial arrangement around my identity.

I couldn't reconcile them anymore.

That evening, I received an unexpected visitor.

The doorbell rang at Olivia's apartment.

She checked the peephole.

Then she turned toward me.

"It's Marcus.""

My stomach tightened.

"Don't open it.""

Olivia nodded.

But Marcus knocked again.

"Aaliyah! I know you're in there!""

Olivia stood beside the door.

"Go away, Marcus.""

"I need to speak to my wife.""

"She's not interested.""

"That's between us!""

I walked closer.

"Marcus, leave.""

He heard me.

His voice changed immediately.

"Baby, please. Just open the door.""

I almost laughed at the sudden sweetness.

"Why?""

"Because we need to talk.""

"About the $1.2 million?""

Silence.

Then he said, "You talked to Vanessa.""

"Yes.""

"She's making things up.""

"Then tell me the truth.""

He lowered his voice.

"Mom is in a terrible position.""

"That's unfortunate.""

"She could lose everything.""

I looked at the door.

"And what about me?""

"You're my wife.""

"You keep saying that as if it gives you the right to use my identity.""

"That's not what happened!""

"Then explain the account opened in my name.""

Silence.

"Marcus?""

He exhaled.

"Mom was going to repay everything.""

"With whose money?""

He didn't answer.

I continued.

"Did you know about the account?""

"Aaliyah, please.""

"Did you?""

A long pause.

Then he said, "Yes.""

My eyes closed.

"Did you know my signature was being copied?""

He became defensive.

"Mom said it was temporary.""

"Did you know?""

"Yes!""

The word exploded through the hallway.

Olivia stepped closer to me.

Marcus continued.

"We were trying to save the business. You don't understand how complicated things became.""

"Did you ever intend to tell me?""

He was quiet.

Then he said, "After everything was settled.""

I stared at the door.

"Everything was never going to be settled, was it?""

"Of course it was.""

"How?""

"Mom had a plan.""

"What plan?""

He hesitated.

And in that hesitation, I heard something more frightening than anger.

Fear.

"Marcus, what was the plan?""

He lowered his voice.

"Mom was going to transfer the properties into a family trust. Once everything was consolidated, the debt would be refinanced.""

"Under whose name?""

He didn't answer.

"Under whose name, Marcus?""

Finally, he said, "Yours.""

I felt my knees weaken.

"You were going to put all the properties and all the debt under my name?""

"Not all of it.""

"How much?""

"Just the guarantees.""

I stared at the door.

"That's the same thing.""

"No, it isn't!""

"Marcus, you were going to make me responsible for a million dollars in debt.""

"We were married. We were supposed to share everything.""

I laughed.

"Apparently, I was supposed to share the debt while your mother kept the properties.""

He said nothing.

Then he spoke again.

"Please, Aaliyah. If you cooperate, we can fix this.""

I looked at Olivia.

She was watching me carefully.

For the first time, I felt no desire to make Marcus comfortable.

"No.""

His voice sharpened.

"You need to think about what you're doing.""

"I have.""

"Mom says the lender may come after everyone.""

"Then everyone should answer for what they signed.""

He took a breath.

"There's something else.""

I waited.

"The company has a meeting tomorrow.""

"With whom?""

"The investors.""

"And?""

He hesitated.

"Mom wants you there.""

I almost laughed.

"Why?""

"Because she says you need to explain your role in the company.""

I looked down at the folder in my hands.

"My role?""

"She wants you to tell them you were aware of the financing arrangements.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"She wants me to lie?""

"She wants you to help.""

I stepped closer to the door.

"Tell your mother something for me.""

"What?""

"She can serve her own dinner, sign her own documents, and explain her own lies.""

Then I walked away.

Marcus knocked again.

"Aaliyah! Wait!""

But I didn't return.

The following morning, Rachel called me at 8:15.

"Are you sitting down?""

I looked at the kitchen table.

"Yes.""

"We've received preliminary records from the lender.""

"What did you find?""

Rachel took a breath.

"The original financing application for the Marietta property includes a statement claiming that you were an active financial officer of Carter Family Holdings.""

I frowned.

"That's impossible.""

"I know. There's no evidence you've ever held that position.""

"Who signed it?""

"Marcus.""

I closed my eyes.

"Of course.""

"There's more. The application includes a personal financial statement listing your income, savings, and employment details.""

"Where did they get those?""

"Some information appears to have come from the documents you previously provided to the family.""

I gripped the phone.

"Can they use that against me?""

"We're challenging the representations. But I want you to understand the seriousness of the situation.""

I nodded even though she couldn't see me.

Then Rachel said something that made me sit upright.

"The lender has also discovered that the Marietta property wasn't the only asset purchased using your financial information.""

"What?""

"There's a second property in your name.""

"Where?""

"In Decatur.""

I remembered the earlier mention of the Decatur property.

"Who owns it?""

"According to the current records, Carter Family Holdings.""

"Then why are you saying it's in my name?""

"Because the purchase documents list you as the beneficial owner.""

I felt my stomach drop.

Rachel continued.

"And there's a third document.""

"What document?""

"A proposed trust transfer.""

I swallowed.

"What's in it?""

"All three properties, including the house where you and Marcus lived, were listed as assets to be transferred into a new family trust.""

I couldn't breathe.

"Who was supposed to control the trust?""

Rachel paused.

"Denise Carter.""

I stared at the wall.

The entire arrangement was suddenly clear.

They wanted my name attached to the debt.

They wanted my identity attached to the properties.

They wanted me to appear responsible for everything while Denise controlled the assets.

And Marcus had been helping her.

I whispered, "What happens now?""

Rachel's voice became firm.

"Now we stop treating this as a private family disagreement.""

She paused.

"Because the lender has agreed to provide us with the original electronic submission records.""

I sat completely still.

"Why is that important?""

"Because those records may show exactly who created the documents, who uploaded them, and when they were altered.""

I looked toward the window.

Outside, a delivery truck rolled slowly down the street.

For three years, Denise had told me that a good daughter-in-law knew her place.

Marcus had told me that a good wife trusted her husband.

And I had believed them.

But tomorrow, the people who had built their little financial empire around my silence were going to discover something.

I wasn't going to wash their dishes.

I wasn't going to sign their papers.

And I certainly wasn't going to accept their debts.

Then Rachel added one final detail.

"There's a problem, Aaliyah.""

My stomach tightened.

"What problem?""

"The electronic records show that the person who uploaded your identity documents wasn't Marcus.""

I gripped the phone.

"Who was it?""

Rachel paused.

Then she said the name.

"Your mother-in-law's attorney.""

I went completely still.

May you like

Because suddenly, I understood that Denise hadn't been acting alone.

And the person who was supposed to protect the law might have been helping her break it.
