Chapter 4: The Property They Stole in My Name

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

The man's words kept repeating in my head.

The property your husband told you was never yours.

I looked at the documents scattered across Olivia's coffee table. The mortgage statements. The suspicious loan guarantee.

The attempted ownership modification. And now this.

"What property are you talking about?"" I finally asked.

Daniel Reeves cleared his throat.

"Ms. Brooks, I'm referring to a residential property in Marietta, Georgia. The records indicate that your name was used in the financing application.""

"I don't own a property in Marietta.""

"That's what we need to establish.""

"Are you saying somebody bought a house using my identity?""

"I'm saying the documentation suggests your identity may have been used as part of the transaction. I cannot make a final determination until our investigation is complete.""

My mouth went dry.

"Who purchased it?""

There was a pause.

"Carter Family Holdings LLC.""

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Denise's company.

The same company that had received money from our joint savings. The same company connected to the $240,000 loan. The same company whose financial problems had suddenly become my responsibility.

"How much is the property worth?"" I asked.

"According to the original valuation, approximately $385,000.""

I almost dropped the phone.

"Three hundred and eighty-five thousand dollars?""

"Yes, ma'am.""

"And you're telling me my name was used?""

"Your name appears in the guarantor documentation and in a separate authorization record.""

I took a breath.

"Mr. Reeves, I never purchased that property. I never authorized anyone to purchase it for me. I've never even seen it.""

"I understand.""

"Then why am I being contacted?""

"Because your name appears in documents associated with the outstanding financing.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Can you send everything to my attorney?""

"Your attorney has already requested the records. We'll coordinate directly with her.""

I thanked him and ended the call.

Olivia was standing beside the couch.

"What happened?""

I stared at her.

"They bought a house.""

"Who?""

"Denise's company.""

"Okay...""

"Apparently, my name is on the financing.""

Her expression changed.

"What?""

I told her everything.

When I finished, she sat down beside me.

"How many properties are we talking about?""

"I don't know.""

She reached for the notebook.

"Then we find out.""

I looked at the clock.

It was nearly nine.

For the first time, I wasn't thinking about my marriage.

I was thinking about how many financial obligations could be attached to my name without my knowledge.

And whether the people who had shared my dinner table for three years had been quietly preparing to make me responsible for their debts.

The following morning, Rachel arrived at the lender's office with me.

Daniel Reeves met us in a conference room on the eighth floor.

He was a tall man in his fifties, wearing a gray suit and carrying a thick folder.

After introductions, he opened his laptop.

"Ms. Brooks, I want to be clear that we're conducting an internal review. We're not asking you to accept responsibility for anything at this stage.""

Rachel nodded.

"Good. Because my client disputes the authenticity of the signatures.""

Daniel placed three documents on the table.

"The first is the original commercial financing application.""

The second was a property purchase agreement.

The third was a personal guarantee.

I examined the documents.

My name appeared on all three.

But the signatures were different.

One looked almost exactly like mine.

Another was missing my middle initial.

The third had a strange curve at the end.

Rachel leaned closer.

"Who submitted these?""

Daniel checked his notes.

"The application was submitted by Marcus Carter. The supporting documentation was uploaded through an account registered to Denise Carter.""

Rachel's expression hardened.

"And who witnessed the guarantee?""

Daniel turned the page.

"An employee of Carter Family Holdings.""

"Notary?""

"There's a notarization stamp, yes.""

Rachel examined it.

"Do you have the notary's information?""

Daniel slid another page across the table.

Rachel wrote down the name.

I stared at the documents.

"Can you show me the property?""

Daniel clicked on an image.

A large brick house appeared on the screen.

It had four bedrooms, a double garage, and a wide front porch. The yard was professionally landscaped.

It looked expensive.

It also looked strangely familiar.

I leaned forward.

"Wait.""

Daniel paused.

"What is it?""

I pointed at the photograph.

"That house.""

"Do you recognize it?""

I swallowed.

"I've seen that house before.""

Rachel turned toward me.

"Where?""

I studied the front porch.

The black iron railing.

The white columns.

The stone pathway.

Then I remembered.

Three months earlier, Denise had invited me to a family barbecue in Marietta.

She had told everyone that she was visiting a friend.

I had gone along because Marcus insisted.

When we arrived, Denise walked straight into this exact house.

She had used her own key.

I remembered asking her whether the property belonged to her friend.

She had laughed.

"Something like that, sweetheart.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"That's Denise's house.""

Daniel looked at the screen.

"Are you certain?""

"I've been inside it.""

Rachel asked, "When?""

"Three months ago. Denise hosted a family gathering there.""

Daniel opened another file.

"The property was purchased through Carter Family Holdings fourteen months ago.""

I stared at him.

"Fourteen months?""

"Yes.""

"Who has been living there?""

"According to the records, the property is classified as a rental investment.""

I shook my head.

"Nobody was renting it. Denise was living there.""

Rachel immediately interrupted.

"Do you have any evidence that she occupied the property?""

"I have photographs from the barbecue. I took some because Vanessa wanted pictures of the family.""

"Do you still have them?""

"Yes.""

"Send them to me.""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"There's another issue.""

Rachel turned toward him.

"Go ahead.""

He opened a spreadsheet.

"The property has been refinanced twice. Both transactions involved documentation referencing Ms. Brooks.""

My mouth went dry.

"How much debt?""

Daniel checked the screen.

"The original financing was approximately $290,000. The refinanced balance is currently around $318,000.""

Rachel leaned back.

"Was the equity released?""

Daniel nodded.

"Approximately $72,000 was distributed after the second refinancing.""

"To whom?""

"To Carter Family Holdings.""

I stared at the table.

They had purchased a property, lived in it, refinanced it, and extracted money.

And somehow, my name had been attached to the entire arrangement.

Rachel closed the folder.

"Mr. Reeves, we need copies of every document, every electronic submission record, and the supporting identity verification.""

"Of course.""

"And we need written confirmation that the lender will not pursue my client while the authenticity of these documents is under investigation.""

Daniel nodded.

"We can provide a temporary hold on collection activity connected to her disputed guarantee.""

Rachel looked at me.

"That's a start.""

I sat quietly.

Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.

"Did Marcus know?""

Daniel looked at his notes.

"He was the primary contact on the application.""

That was enough.

Marcus knew.

He had known exactly what he was doing.

We left the building just after noon.

In the elevator, Rachel received a call.

She listened for a moment, then looked at me.

"That was the lender.""

"What happened?""

"They found another application.""

My heart sank.

"Another property?""

Rachel nodded.

"An investment property in Decatur.""

I leaned against the elevator wall.

"How many?""

"We don't know yet.""

Outside, the Atlanta sun was painfully bright.

Rachel put a hand on my shoulder.

"Listen carefully. We are going to take this one step at a time.""

I nodded.

"Do you think Marcus could have done all of this alone?""

"I don't want to speculate. We need records.""

"But Denise was receiving the money.""

"Yes.""

"And Marcus submitted the documents.""

"Yes.""

I looked at her.

"Then how can they both pretend they know nothing?""

Rachel gave me a serious look.

"People can pretend many things. Documents are harder to explain.""

That evening, Marcus called.

I answered because I wanted to hear him lie.

"Aaliyah.""

"Marcus.""

"Where have you been?""

"Working.""

"We need to talk.""

"About the properties?""

He went silent.

I smiled bitterly.

"That's what I thought.""

"Who told you about Marietta?""

"The lender.""

His voice changed.

"What did they say?""

"They said my identity was used to finance a house your mother lives in.""

"That's not what happened.""

"Then explain it.""

He exhaled.

"Mom needed a place to stay while she was dealing with the business.""

"So you bought her a house?""

"It was an investment.""

"With my name?""

"You're making it sound worse than it is.""

I gripped the phone.

"Did you submit those documents?""

"Mom handled most of the paperwork.""

"Did you submit them?""

Silence.

"Marcus.""

"Yes.""

The single word felt like a slap.

"Did I authorize you?""

"We were married.""

"That isn't an answer.""

He became irritated.

"Why are you doing this? Everything was supposed to benefit the family.""

"Which family?""

"Our family!""

I laughed.

"Marcus, your mother has a house in Marietta, your company has money from our savings, and my name is attached to hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. What exactly did I receive?""

He didn't answer.

Then he said, "You got a home.""

I looked around Olivia's apartment.

"Which home?""

"The one we live in.""

"Your name is on the deed. Mine isn't.""

"That's a technicality.""

"A technicality?""

"Mom said we'd correct it later.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The truth, slipping out because he was too angry to protect it.

"Why did you tell me the house was ours?""

"Because it was easier.""

"Easier for whom?""

He sighed.

"You're turning this into something ugly.""

"No, Marcus. I'm finally looking at what you've done.""

Then I heard Denise in the background.

"Ask her if she's coming tomorrow!""

Marcus covered the phone, but I could still hear him.

"She's not listening, Mom.""

Denise said something else.

He returned to the call.

"Mom wants you to come to dinner tomorrow.""

I almost laughed.

"Is she planning to serve the dishes herself this time?""

"Don't start.""

"Then tell her I'm not coming.""

"You're making things difficult.""

"No. I'm making things visible.""

I ended the call.

A minute later, Olivia came into the living room carrying a package.

"Something arrived for you.""

It was a large envelope.

No return address.

My name was printed neatly across the front.

Inside was a photocopy of a document.

I unfolded it.

It was a handwritten note.

You should have stayed quiet. Your husband tried to protect you. Now you're going to lose everything.

There was no signature.

But I recognized the handwriting.

The rounded letters.

The exaggerated capital Y.

The same handwriting Denise used on the little recipe cards she had given me when Marcus and I first married.

Olivia read it over my shoulder.

"That's a threat.""

I nodded.

Then I noticed something on the back of the paper.

A property address.

The Marietta house.

And beneath it, written in red ink, were four words.

*ASK VANESSA ABOUT THE DEED.*

I looked at Olivia.

"Vanessa?""

She nodded slowly.

"Looks like your sister-in-law knows something.""

I picked up my phone.

For the first time in three years, I wasn't afraid of making that family uncomfortable.

May you like

I was afraid of what they had already done.

And I intended to find out every last detail.
