Chapter 8: The Woman Who Never Left

The message stayed on the screen.

*Keep Nia safe. Daniel knows I’m alive.*

Nobody moved.

It was only a sentence.

Eight words.

But those eight words changed everything.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“You knew?””

His voice was quiet.

That was more frightening than yelling.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I knew she was alive.””

Nia stared at her.

“You knew my mother was alive?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I thought she was.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Nia’s voice cracked.

“You thought?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“I didn’t know where she was. I didn’t know if she was safe. I only knew what she told me.””

Marcus grabbed the old phone from the table.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because Daniel threatened me.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“What did he say?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“He said if I told you, he would make sure everyone believed your mother was dangerous.””

Marcus frowned.

“She was the victim.””

“I know.””

“Then why would anyone believe him?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because he was prepared.””

The room became quiet.

Nia hugged the letter against her chest.

She didn’t know what to feel.

Her entire life had been built around one painful belief.

Her mother left.

Now she had to replace that belief with another.

Her mother ran.

Her mother fought.

Her mother survived.

But she still wasn’t here.

“Where is she?”” Nia asked.

Vanessa looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

“Did you try to find her?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell Dad?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Because every time I got close, something happened.””

“What?””

“My car was damaged.””

Marcus looked at her.

“When?””

“Several times.””

“Why didn’t you report it?””

“Because I knew who did it.””

Marcus stared.

“Daniel?””

Vanessa nodded.

Nia felt a chill.

The same man who created the trust.

The same man whose name was on the documents.

The same man her mother feared.

“How do we find her?”” Nia asked.

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Marcus said:

“We start with Daniel.””

Vanessa looked alarmed.

“No.””

Marcus turned.

“No?””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He wants you to look for him.””

“Why?””

“Because he knows about the trust.””

Marcus looked confused.

“The trust?””

“Yes.””

“He doesn’t have access.””

“No.””

“Then what does he want?””

Vanessa looked at Nia.

And Nia immediately knew.

It was about her.

“He wants Nia.””

The words made the room freeze.

Marcus stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa’s voice lowered.

“When your mother created the trust, she added a condition.””

“What condition?””

“That when Nia turns eighteen, the money becomes fully hers.””

Marcus nodded.

“I know.””

“But there was another condition.””

“What?””

Vanessa looked at the letter.

“If something happened to your mother, Daniel would become the temporary administrator.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why would she allow that?””

“She didn’t.””

Vanessa pointed at the documents.

“That’s the part Daniel changed.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“He altered the agreement?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Your mother found out.””

“And then?””

“She tried to remove him.””

Nia’s stomach tightened.

“But she disappeared before she could.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus walked toward the window.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he turned.

“We need legal help.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know someone.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Who?””

“The attorney who helped your mother.””

Marcus immediately frowned.

“Daniel?””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“The real attorney.””

She walked to a cabinet.

From inside, she pulled out a small envelope.

Nia watched.

Another envelope.

Another secret.

Vanessa noticed her expression.

“I’m sorry.””

Nia looked at her.

“For what?””

“For all the things I kept from you.””

Nia didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t know if she forgave her yet.

Vanessa handed the envelope to Marcus.

“He gave this to me years ago.””

“Who?””

“Daniel’s former partner.””

Marcus opened it.

Inside was a business card.

A name.

*Evelyn Hart.*

Nia didn’t recognize it.

Marcus did.

His expression changed.

“You know her?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She worked with Daniel before she realized what he was doing.””

“Why didn’t she go to the police?””

“Because she was afraid.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Everyone was afraid.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Yes.””

Nia looked at the card.

“How does this help us find Mom?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Because Evelyn was the last person your mother contacted before she disappeared.””

The next morning, Marcus drove them across town.

Nia sat in the back seat holding the letter.

She had read it five times.

Each time, she found something new.

A sentence.

A word.

A feeling.

Her mother had written:

*You were the reason I survived.*

Nia had spent years thinking she was the reason her mother left.

Now she had to learn she was the reason her mother fought.

When they arrived at Evelyn Hart’s office, the building looked old.

Not abandoned.

Just forgotten.

The kind of place where secrets could survive.

Marcus knocked.

A woman in her sixties opened the door.

She looked surprised.

Then scared.

“Marcus Bennett?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

Her eyes moved to Nia.

And everything changed.

“Oh my God.””

Nia stepped back.

“What?””

The woman covered her mouth.

“You’re her.””

Marcus frowned.

“Her?””

The woman looked at Nia.

“You look exactly like your mother.””

Nia didn’t know whether that made her happy or sad.

Evelyn stepped aside.

“Come in.””

Inside, the office smelled like old books and coffee.

Evelyn sat across from them.

“I never thought I’d see you.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“You knew my wife.””

“Yes.””

“Did you know she was alive?””

Evelyn became still.

Slowly, she looked at Vanessa.

Then at Marcus.

“Yes.””

Nia’s heart dropped.

Another person.

Another secret.

“How many people knew?”” Marcus asked.

Evelyn looked down.

“Not many.””

“But enough.””

Evelyn sighed.

“Your wife wanted to protect Nia.””

“She could have told me.””

“She wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t she?””

Evelyn looked at Nia.

“Because she believed Daniel was watching you.””

Nia felt cold.

“Watching me?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Daniel knew the trust would eventually belong to you.””

“So he wanted my money.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

“Because Daniel had already stolen from other clients.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“How much?””

“Millions.””

Nia looked down.

Her mother had been fighting someone dangerous.

Alone.

For years.

“What happened after my mother disappeared?”” Nia asked.

Evelyn looked at her.

“She came to me once.””

“When?””

“Two months after the accident.””

Nia’s breath caught.

“She was alive?””

“Yes.””

“Was she hurt?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Badly.””

Marcus looked away.

“What did she say?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with sadness.

“She said she wanted to come home.””

Nia’s chest tightened.

“She wanted to come home?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she?””

Evelyn looked at Vanessa.

Because of that glance, Nia understood.

There was more.

Something nobody wanted to say.

Marcus noticed.

“Tell us.””

Evelyn hesitated.

“She believed someone close to you was helping Daniel.””

Marcus froze.

“Someone close to me?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Evelyn looked down.

“She didn’t know.””

Nia looked at Vanessa.

Her stepmother looked away.

“Then why did she stay hidden?””

Evelyn answered quietly.

“Because she received proof that Daniel wasn’t working alone.””

Marcus frowned.

“Proof of what?””

Evelyn opened a drawer.

She removed a photograph.

Then placed it on the desk.

Nia looked down.

It was a picture of Daniel.

Standing beside someone.

Someone she recognized.

Someone she had seen every day.

Her heart stopped.

May you like

Because the person standing next to Daniel was Vanessa.

But the date on the photograph was after her mother disappeared.
