Chapter 5: The Truth She Hid

Nia read the sentence again and again.

The words blurred together.

*Do not let Vanessa Bennett access this account unless Nia knows the truth.*

The sentence felt impossible.

Because Vanessa was the person who packed her lunches.

The person who drove her to school.

The person who had helped her with homework when Marcus worked late.

The person who had taken family photos with her.

But she was also the person her mother had warned her about.

Nia looked at Vanessa differently now.

Not because she knew she was guilty.

Because she realized she didn’t know who Vanessa really was.

Marcus sat across from the bank manager, holding the paper so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

“Can you tell us who added Vanessa to the account?”” he asked.

Rachel, the bank manager, shook her head.

“Both account holders signed the original documents.””

“So my ex-wife agreed?””

“Yes.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then why leave that note?””

Rachel looked at the file.

“The note was added later.””

“When?””

“About six months after the account was opened.””

Nia looked at her father.

“Mom wrote it?””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus leaned back.

Six months.

Something had happened during those six months.

Something that changed everything.

“Can we see the original documents?”” Marcus asked.

Rachel hesitated.

“Some of them.””

She pulled out another folder.

“These are copies from when the account was created.””

Marcus looked through them.

Nia watched his eyes move across the pages.

Then suddenly he stopped.

“What?””

Nia leaned closer.

“What is it?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He handed the paper to her.

Nia looked down.

At the bottom of the document were two signatures.

One belonged to her mother.

The other belonged to Vanessa.

But beneath them was another line.

A witness signature.

And the name written there was:

*Daniel Whitmore.*

Nia didn’t recognize it.

“Who is that?””

Marcus stared.

“I don’t know.””

Rachel looked at the page.

“He was the attorney who prepared the account documents.””

“Attorney?””

“Yes.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“Why would my ex-wife need an attorney to open a savings account?””

Rachel folded her hands.

“Because this wasn’t a normal savings account.””

“What was it?””

“A protected trust.””

The word hung in the air.

Nia had heard the word before.

Usually in movies.

Usually when someone died.

“A trust?””

Rachel nodded.

“Your mother created a trust for you.””

Marcus looked stunned.

“And Vanessa?””

“She was listed as a secondary guardian.””

Nia looked confused.

“Why?””

Rachel glanced at the file.

“That’s something your mother would have to explain.””

A cold feeling moved through Nia.

But her mother wasn’t here.

She couldn’t explain anything.

Marcus thanked Rachel and left the bank with a copy of the documents.

Neither of them spoke during the drive home.

The silence was different this time.

Before, silence meant anger.

Now it meant questions.

Too many questions.

When they pulled into the driveway, Vanessa was already waiting.

She stood on the front steps.

She looked nervous.

Nia had never seen Vanessa nervous before.

“Where did you go?”” Vanessa asked.

Marcus turned off the car.

“To the bank.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You went without me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marcus stepped out.

“Because I needed answers.””

Vanessa looked at Nia.

“And you took her?””

Nia opened the car door.

“She deserves to know.””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“Did you tell her everything?””

Marcus stared.

“You knew there was a trust.””

Vanessa went completely still.

That was enough.

Nia saw it.

Marcus saw it.

“You knew.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I knew there was something.””

“How long?””

“Marcus—”

“How long?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Years.””

Nia felt like the ground moved.

Years.

Vanessa knew.

All this time.

“You knew about my account?”” Nia asked.

Vanessa looked at her.

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

Nia almost smiled.

Not because it was funny.

Because she was tired of hearing that.

“Everyone says they’re protecting me.””

Vanessa’s expression softened.

“Nia—”

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“But nobody ever tells me anything.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked between them.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

Vanessa opened the front door.

“Not here.””

Marcus followed her inside.

Nia followed too.

This time, nobody told her to leave.

They sat in the living room.

The same room where they had celebrated birthdays.

The same room where family pictures hung on the walls.

It suddenly felt unfamiliar.

Vanessa sat down.

“When your mother created the trust, she was scared.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Scared of what?””

Vanessa looked down.

“People.””

“That doesn’t answer anything.””

“She had made mistakes.””

Nia looked at her.

“What mistakes?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she said:

“Your mother owed people money.””

Marcus immediately shook his head.

“That’s not true.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You don’t know everything.””

“I knew her.””

“You knew the version she showed you.””

Nia felt a sharp pain in her chest.

Everyone had a different version of her mother.

Her father saw someone worth protecting.

Vanessa saw someone dangerous.

And Nia?

She only saw a woman from old photographs.

A woman whose voice she couldn’t remember.

Marcus stood.

“If she was in trouble, why did she create the trust?””

“Because she wanted Nia protected.””

“From what?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Nia noticed.

Again.

That hesitation.

“From who?”” Nia asked.

Vanessa looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

The answer was strange.

Because it sounded honest.

Marcus sat back down.

“Then what do you know?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“I know your mother came to me.””

“When?””

“Before she left.””

Nia froze.

“She came here?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She came to our house.””

Marcus looked shocked.

“You never told me.””

“She asked me not to.””

“And you listened?””

Vanessa looked away.

“She said you would try to stop her.””

“Stop her from what?””

Vanessa’s eyes moved to Nia.

“She said she needed to disappear.””

Nia felt tears forming.

“Why?””

Vanessa was quiet.

Then she whispered:

“Because someone was looking for her.””

Marcus stood.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I’m telling you what she told me.””

“And the account?””

Vanessa looked at Nia.

“She asked me to help.””

“Help how?””

“She said if anything happened to her, Nia would need the money.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then why did she put your name on it?””

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“Because she trusted me.””

Nia stared.

Her mother trusted Vanessa.

But warned her about Vanessa.

None of it made sense.

“Then why did she write that note?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

She didn’t answer.

Marcus noticed.

“Vanessa.””

She looked down.

“She changed her mind.””

“Why?””

“Because…”

She stopped.

Nia leaned forward.

“Because what?””

Vanessa looked at her.

And for the first time, Nia saw real sadness in her eyes.

“Because the night before she left, she found out I had lied to her.””

Marcus went quiet.

“What lie?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I told her I had destroyed something.””

“What?””

“A letter.””

Nia felt a chill.

“What letter?””

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

Then back at Nia.

“A letter your mother wrote to you.””

Nia’s breath caught.

“A letter?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Marcus’s voice became sharp.

“Where is the letter?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I don’t have it anymore.””

“Then who does?””

Silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Your mother gave it to someone else.””

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at Nia.

And the fear returned.

The same fear from the store.

The same fear from the kitchen.

“The person she was running from.””

Marcus stood completely still.

“What person?””

Vanessa’s phone suddenly rang.

Everyone jumped.

She looked at the screen.

Her face turned pale.

Nia saw the name.

Even from across the room.

A name she had never heard before.

Vanessa answered.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You shouldn’t be calling me.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

Vanessa covered the phone.

“No one.””

But the voice on the other end suddenly became loud enough for everyone to hear.

A man’s voice.

Cold.

Calm.

And familiar to Vanessa.

“Vanessa, stop pretending.””

She froze.

The man continued.

“Marcus knows about the account now, doesn’t he?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Nia felt her heartbeat quicken.

The man paused.

Then said the words that changed everything.

“Tell him the truth about why his daughter’s mother disappeared…”

May you like

A long silence.

“And tell him what you did the night she left.””
