Chapter 6: The Night She Disappeared
Vanessa’s hand trembled around the phone.
It was barely noticeable.
But Nia saw it.
She had spent years watching Vanessa’s smallest reactions.
The tight smile when she was annoyed.
The raised eyebrow when someone challenged her.
The calm voice she used when she wanted control.
But this was different.
This wasn’t anger.
This was fear.
“Who is that?”” Marcus asked.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
The voice on the phone came again.
“Vanessa?””
The room felt smaller.
Nia looked at her father.
Marcus’s expression had changed.
He wasn’t confused anymore.
He was putting pieces together.
“Give me the phone,” he said.
Vanessa immediately pulled it away.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Marcus stared at her.
“No?””
Vanessa stood.
“Marcus, don’t.””
“Who is he?””
“Nobody.””
The voice on the phone laughed softly.
A cold, uncomfortable sound.
“Still lying, Vanessa?””
Her face went pale.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Who is he?””
Vanessa ended the call.
The silence afterward was worse.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Then Marcus spoke.
“You need to tell me everything.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I can’t.””
Nia’s heart sank.
Not because Vanessa refused.
Because she sounded terrified.
“Why?”” Marcus asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
“Because you don’t understand.””
“Then make me understand.””
“It’s not that simple.””
Marcus laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
Because he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“My daughter’s mother disappeared eleven years ago.””
Vanessa looked down.
“And now I find out you knew she was in trouble.””
“I knew she was scared.””
“You knew she was scared?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No. You keep saying it because it sounds better than the truth.””
Vanessa looked hurt.
Nia stood quietly.
She didn’t know who to believe.
That scared her more than anything.
For years, there had always been a simple story.
Her mother left.
Her father stayed.
Vanessa helped raise her.
But now every piece of that story was breaking apart.
Marcus picked up the trust documents from the table.
“My ex-wife created this because she thought something might happen to her.””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“She trusted you.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did she warn Nia about you?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
For a moment, she looked exhausted.
Not like the woman who controlled every decision.
Just like someone carrying something too heavy.
“Because I made a mistake.””
Nia looked up.
“What mistake?””
Vanessa opened her eyes.
She looked at Nia.
“I should have told your father.””
“Told him what?””
“That your mother came to me the night she left.””
Marcus froze.
“The night she disappeared?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
Nia felt cold.
“You saw her?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“Here.””
The room went silent.
Nia looked around the living room.
This house.
This place where she had grown up.
Her mother had stood here.
Her mother had been here.
And nobody told her.
“What happened?””
Vanessa sat down slowly.
“She came after midnight.””
Marcus looked confused.
“You were home?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you wake me?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because she asked me not to.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You’re telling me my wife came to my house and you hid it from me?””
“Your ex-wife.””
“Don’t correct me.””
Vanessa looked away.
“She was desperate.””
Nia listened carefully.
“She looked different.””
“How?””
“Scared.””
The word was quiet.
“She wasn’t the person you remembered.””
Marcus frowned.
“What did she say?””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“She said someone was following her.””
“Who?””
“She didn’t tell me.””
“Why?””
“Because she thought anyone who knew too much could become a target.””
Nia swallowed.
“Did she say anything about me?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“Yes.””
Nia’s heart stopped.
“What?””
“She asked about you.””
“What did she say?””
Vanessa’s eyes softened.
“She asked if you still slept with the little blue blanket.””
Nia froze.
The blanket.
She had forgotten about it.
A small faded blanket she carried everywhere as a child.
Her mother used to wrap her in it.
“You remembered that?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She told me she hoped you would forgive her someday.””
Nia looked down.
Her eyes burned.
“Did she say why she left?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she nodded.
“She said she had no choice.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“No choice?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“She said staying would put Nia in danger.””
The words hit the room.
Nia shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“She left because of me?””
“No.””
Marcus answered immediately.
But his voice sounded uncertain.
Vanessa looked at her.
“She didn’t leave because of you.””
“Then why?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Because of someone else.””
Marcus stared.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“I never knew his name.””
“But you knew he existed.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because he called the house.””
Marcus went still.
“When?””
“After she left.””
Nia felt a chill.
“What did he say?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“He asked if your mother had given me anything.””
Marcus frowned.
“Like what?””
“Documents.””
“The trust?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“And?””
“I lied.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“You told him?””
“No.””
“Then what did you say?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I told him I didn’t know anything.””
“And he believed you?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“He didn’t.””
The room went quiet.
Nia’s voice was small.
“Did he hurt you?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“No.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Because the answer was obvious.
She was afraid of what he knew.
Marcus walked toward the kitchen.
“We’re calling the police.””
Vanessa stood quickly.
“No.””
He turned.
“No?””
“No police.””
“Why?””
“Because if he knows I talked…”
She stopped.
Marcus stared.
“If he knows you talked, what?””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“He’ll come back.””
Nia felt a shiver.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Who is he?””
Vanessa looked at him.
Then at Nia.
And finally, she said:
“His name is Daniel Whitmore.””
The name hit harder than expected.
Because Nia recognized it.
Not from memory.
From the documents.
The attorney.
The person who helped create the trust.
Marcus’s face changed.
“Daniel Whitmore?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He wasn’t just your mother’s lawyer.””
“Then what was he?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“He was someone she trusted.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Then why would she be running from him?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Because she found out what he was really doing with her money.””
Nia stepped forward.
“What do you mean?””
Vanessa looked at the trust papers.
“The account wasn’t created because your mother wanted to give you money.””
“Then why?””
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“She created it because she was afraid someone would take money from you.””
Marcus stared.
“Take money from a child?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at Nia.
And the answer was something nobody expected.
“Daniel.””
The room went silent.
“But he was the attorney,” Marcus said.
“Yes.””
“He helped create the trust.””
“Yes.””
“Then how could he steal from it?””
Vanessa looked at the papers.
“Because he was the only person who knew exactly how it worked.””
Nia looked at her.
“Did Mom know?””
Vanessa nodded.
“That’s why she ran.””
Marcus walked back to the table.
“Where is Daniel now?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Nobody knows.””
“Then how did he call you?””
Her eyes moved toward her phone.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus picked up the phone.
“We need to report this.””
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Marcus.””
He looked at her.
For the first time, she wasn’t acting like his wife.
She looked like someone begging.
“Please.””
“What?””
“Before you do anything…”
She looked at Nia.
“Let me show her something.””
Nia frowned.
“Show me what?””
Vanessa walked toward the stairs.
Something about the way she moved made the room quiet.
She wasn’t walking like someone hiding something.
She was walking like someone finally giving up.
She stopped at the top step.
“I kept it because I didn’t know what else to do.””
Marcus followed her with his eyes.
“Kept what?””
Vanessa reached into a small box hidden behind a stack of old photo albums.
Then she returned.
In her hand was a yellow envelope.
Nia’s breath caught.
Because written across the front were four words.
Words that looked like they had been written years ago.
*For my daughter, Nia.*
Vanessa held it out.
“I was supposed to give this to you when you were eighteen.””
Nia stared at the envelope.
Her mother’s handwriting.
Her mother’s words.
After eleven years of wondering.
After eleven years of silence.
Her mother had left something behind.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Why didn’t you?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because Daniel was right.””
Everyone froze.
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Vanessa whispered:
“He told me if Nia ever learned the truth…”
She looked at the envelope.
“…she wouldn’t just lose her mother.””
May you like
A pause.
“She would lose her father too.””
