Chapter 7: The Letter From A Mother
The envelope felt heavier than it should have.
Nia held it with both hands.
It was only paper.
A few sheets of paper hidden away for eleven years.
But somehow, it carried more weight than anything she had ever held.
Her mother’s handwriting was on the front.
*For my daughter, Nia.*
Not for Marcus.
Not for whoever finds this.
For her.
Nia traced the letters with her thumb.
“She wrote this?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“The night she left.””
Nia’s fingers tightened around the envelope.
The night she disappeared.
The night everyone had decided she was gone.
But she had been here.
She had written something.
Something meant for Nia.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You had this the entire time?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Yes.””
His face changed.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
“Why?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Because I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
She looked at Nia.
“Of what would happen if you knew.””
Nia stared at her.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
The words came out before she could stop them.
Vanessa looked hurt.
But Nia didn’t take them back.
“You don’t get to keep my mother’s words from me.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at Nia.
And for the first time, she didn’t look like a little girl waiting for permission.
She looked like someone who had been waiting too long.
Vanessa slowly nodded.
“You’re right.””
That surprised Nia.
Vanessa rarely admitted being wrong.
“I should have given it to you.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“Because Daniel told me not to.””
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
“Daniel threatened you.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That was an answer.
Marcus ran a hand through his hair.
“This man controlled everyone around him.””
“He knew things,” Vanessa whispered.
“Like what?””
Vanessa looked at the envelope.
“He knew your mother’s fears.””
Nia frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“Your mother trusted Daniel at first.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Why?””
“He was the attorney helping her set up the trust.””
“Yes.””
“But she didn’t know he had another reason for being interested in it.””
“What reason?””
Vanessa looked at Nia.
“Your mother’s family.””
Nia blinked.
“My family?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Before she met your father, your mother inherited money.””
Marcus stared.
“I didn’t know that.””
“Most people didn’t.””
“How much?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“A lot.””
Nia looked between them.
“How much is a lot?””
Vanessa answered quietly.
“Enough that people started paying attention.””
The words made Nia uncomfortable.
She had always imagined her mother as someone who left because she couldn’t handle being a mother.
But now every answer created more questions.
“Was Daniel trying to take it?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Your mother thought so.””
Marcus looked at the envelope.
“And she put the money into a trust for Nia.””
“Yes.””
“To keep him from getting it.””
“Yes.””
Nia looked down.
“So my mom didn’t leave because she didn’t want me.””
Nobody answered.
But nobody needed to.
The silence told her.
Her eyes filled.
All those years.
Every birthday.
Every school event.
Every time she wondered why she wasn’t enough.
Maybe the answer had never been about her.
Marcus sat beside her.
“She loved you.””
Nia wiped her eyes quickly.
“I don’t remember her.””
“I know.””
“That’s the worst part.””
Marcus looked at her.
“I know.””
“I have pictures.””
She touched the envelope.
“But I don’t remember her voice.””
Marcus’s expression broke.
“You were so little.””
“I know.””
Nia looked at the handwriting again.
“Can I read it?””
Marcus nodded.
Vanessa stepped back.
“I’ll leave.””
Nia looked at her.
“No.””
Vanessa stopped.
Nia held the envelope.
“You should hear it too.””
Vanessa looked surprised.
“Are you sure?””
“No.””
Nia took a breath.
“But I’m tired of people knowing things about my life except me.””
Nobody argued.
Nia opened the envelope.
The paper inside was folded carefully.
The ink had faded slightly.
Her hands shook as she unfolded it.
Then she began reading.
*My sweet Nia,*
*If you are reading this, it means I wasn’t able to explain everything to you myself.*
Nia stopped.
Her throat tightened.
Marcus looked away.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Nia continued.
*The first thing I need you to know is this: I never left because I stopped loving you.*
A tear fell onto the paper.
She wiped it away.
*You were the best thing that ever happened to me. Every choice I made after you were born was because I wanted you safe.*
Nia’s breathing became uneven.
**I know someday you may be angry with me. You may wonder why I wasn’t there. You may think I chose to leave you.
Please don’t carry that pain. It was never yours to carry.**
Marcus closed his eyes.
Nia continued.
*Your father loves you more than anything. If he is reading this too, I need him to know that I tried to tell him. I tried many times. But every time I got closer, I realized the danger was closer too.*
Nia looked up.
Marcus was staring at the floor.
She kept reading.
*Daniel Whitmore is not the man he appears to be.*
Everyone became still.
*He helped me create the trust because he knew I needed someone I could trust. But eventually I discovered he had been moving money from accounts connected to my inheritance.*
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Nia continued.
*I confronted him. He denied everything. Then he changed. He stopped acting like my lawyer and started acting like someone who owned me.*
Her hands shook.
*He told me that if I went to the police, I would lose everything. He told me he knew how to make people believe I was unstable. He told me he could take Nia away from me.*
Nia stopped.
The room felt cold.
She looked at Marcus.
Her father looked devastated.
*I knew I couldn’t fight him while protecting Nia. So I made the hardest choice of my life. I left.*
Nia covered her mouth.
The next words were harder.
*I need you to understand something. Leaving you was not abandoning you. It was the only way I knew to keep him away from you.*
The room was silent except for her breathing.
*Vanessa helped me because she believed me. I know she may make mistakes. I know she may not always say the right thing. But she promised me she would protect you.*
Nia looked up.
Vanessa was crying silently.
Nia continued.
*If Vanessa is still with your father, please know this: she kept a promise she made to me. She protected you when I couldn’t.*
Nia stopped.
That part hurt.
Because it was complicated.
Vanessa had protected her.
And hurt her.
Both things could be true.
She read the final paragraph.
*Nia, my beautiful girl, if you ever feel like you were not loved, please remember this. You were the reason I fought. You were the reason I ran. You were the reason I survived.*
*I hope one day you forgive me.*
*I love you forever.*
*Mom.*
The letter ended.
Nia stared at the page.
She waited for anger.
For sadness.
For some huge feeling that would explain everything.
Instead, she just felt tired.
Eleven years of wondering.
Eleven years of believing she wasn’t worth staying for.
And now she had proof.
She had always been loved.
Marcus reached for her hand.
“I’m sorry.””
Nia looked at him.
“For what?””
“For letting you believe something that wasn’t true.””
She shook her head.
“You didn’t know.””
“I should have.””
“You were hurt too.””
Marcus looked surprised.
Nia looked at the letter.
“I think everyone was.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa quietly said:
“She was going to come back.””
Nia looked at her.
“What?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Your mother.””
Marcus looked up.
“What do you mean?””
“She had a plan.””
“When?””
“After she got enough evidence against Daniel.””
Marcus stared.
“How do you know?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Because she called me.””
Nia froze.
“When?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“The week before the accident.””
Marcus stood.
“What accident?””
Vanessa went pale.
Nia felt her heart stop.
“What accident?””
Vanessa looked at both of them.
And whispered:
“Your mother didn’t disappear.””
A pause.
“She was found unconscious two days after she left.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“What?””
Vanessa’s voice shook.
“She survived.””
Nia couldn’t breathe.
Her mother.
Alive?
Marcus stepped closer.
“Where is she?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
“Vanessa.””
“I swear.””
“Then how do you know she survived?””
Vanessa looked at the letter in Nia’s hands.
“Because she sent me one last message.””
Nia whispered:
“What message?””
Vanessa reached into her purse.
Her hands trembling.
She pulled out an old phone.
A phone that looked like it had been hidden for years.
Then she opened a saved message.
And placed it on the table.
Marcus read the screen.
His face went completely blank.
Nia leaned closer.
May you like
The message had only one sentence.
*Keep Nia safe. Daniel knows I’m alive.*
