Chapter 9: The Truth Buried With Maya’s Name

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Richard’s words hung in the room like a threat.

*“She was proof.””*

I held Maya tighter.

My daughter’s small fingers wrapped around mine.

She didn’t understand the conversation.

She didn’t understand why adults kept looking at her like she was a mystery to solve.

She only knew that the people around her were scared.

And I hated that.

I hated that a child who should have been worried about cartoons and bedtime stories was standing in the middle of secrets created by adults.

I looked at Richard.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Daniel.

“You never told her?””

Daniel’s face was pale.

“Don’t.””

Richard smiled.

“Still protecting her.””

“Leave.””

Richard ignored him.

“You really thought you could build a normal life after everything?””

My eyes moved between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Claire, don’t listen to him.””

Richard laughed.

“That’s exactly what everyone has done for years.””

He looked at me.

“They kept you comfortable.””

My jaw tightened.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“They kept me ignorant.””

For the first time, Richard looked impressed.

“Maybe you’re finally ready.””

I didn’t like the way he said it.

Like he was the one deciding what I was allowed to know.

“Start talking.””

Richard glanced at Vanessa.

“She already told you about the children.””

My stomach turned.

“The children.””

“Yes.””

His voice remained calm.

“Your daughter was part of a larger plan.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You don’t get to talk about her like that.””

Richard looked at him.

“You still don’t understand your father’s work.””

“My father was a monster.””

The words came out of Daniel’s mouth so quickly that everyone went silent.

Richard’s smile disappeared.

“You should be careful.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“No.””

He stepped forward.

“For years, I stayed quiet because I was afraid.””

His voice shook.

“But not anymore.””

I looked at him.

It was the first time all day I saw something different in his eyes.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Regret.

Real regret.

Daniel continued.

“My father destroyed people’s lives.””

Richard said nothing.

“He used money. He used lawyers. He used people who were desperate.””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“And he hurt children.””

Maya lowered her head.

I immediately covered her ears.

“Enough.””

I looked at everyone.

“She is not a piece of evidence.””

My voice cracked.

“She is my daughter.””

Richard stared at me.

Then he smiled.

“You still don’t know.””

The words made my blood run cold.

“Know what?””

Richard walked slowly toward the table.

He picked up the old photograph from the box.

“You think Emily was the victim.””

“She was.””

Richard shook his head.

“She was part of the reason Maya disappeared.””

I froze.

“No.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Richard looked at her.

“You’re still pretending to be innocent?””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“I admitted what I did.””

“But not everything.””

The tension between them was obvious.

There was history there.

Pain.

Betrayal.

Secrets.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What isn’t she telling me?””

Vanessa looked down.

Richard smiled.

“Ask her.””

I turned.

“Vanessa.””

She didn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know what my brother planned.””

Richard laughed.

“Brother?””

Vanessa ignored him.

“I thought he was helping Emily.””

I stared.

“Helping?””

She nodded.

“He told me he was protecting Maya.””

“And you believed him?””

“Yes.””

Her voice broke.

“I was wrong.””

The room became quiet.

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“When Emily refused to give up Maya, my brother created a plan.””

“What plan?””

Vanessa looked at my daughter.

“He wanted to make it look like Emily abandoned her.””

My hands tightened.

“But she didn’t.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She fought.””

“Then why did she lose?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Because someone changed the evidence.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Who?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Your father.””

Richard’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

A real fear.

And that told me something.

He wasn’t angry because Vanessa was lying.

He was angry because she was telling the truth.

I stepped closer.

“You knew.””

Richard didn’t respond.

“You knew the papers were fake.””

Silence.

“You knew Emily never abandoned Maya.””

Still silence.

Then Richard finally spoke.

“She was never going to win.””

My heart dropped.

“Why?””

Richard looked at me.

“Because nobody cared about a young woman with no money.””

The cruelty in his voice made me sick.

Daniel looked disgusted.

“You’re proud of that?””

“No.””

Richard’s face remained emotionless.

“I’m realistic.””

I grabbed Maya’s hand.

“We’re leaving.””

Richard moved slightly.

“Leaving won’t change anything.””

I stopped.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“The reason Maya was targeted is because of her mother.””

My heart tightened.

“What about Emily?””

Richard reached into his coat.

He pulled out a file.

A thick file.

And placed it on the table.

“Open it.””

I didn’t move.

“What is it?””

“Everything.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then Vanessa.

Neither of them knew what to say.

Slowly, I opened the file.

The first page was a medical report.

The second was a genetic test.

My eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

A name.

A result.

Something that made my hands go numb.

*Emily Carter and Maya Carter — Biological Match.*

I frowned.

Of course they were.

They were mother and daughter.

Then I saw the second name.

*Daniel Bennett.*

My heart stopped.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

I flipped the page.

Another report.

Another test.

Then I saw it.

A sentence highlighted in yellow.

*“The child’s genetic history may prove illegal medical experimentation conducted through private adoption networks.””*

I felt dizzy.

“What?””

Richard watched me.

“Maya was born with information someone wanted hidden.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You’re lying.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Maya.

“She survived something she wasn’t supposed to survive.””

I felt sick.

My daughter.

My little girl.

Not a secret.

Not a case file.

Not an experiment.

A child.

A child who deserved better.

Then my phone rang.

Emily.

I answered immediately.

“Emily?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Claire.””

“What’s happening?””

A pause.

Then:

“You found the file.””

I looked at Richard.

“How do you know?””

Emily whispered:

“Because Richard is the reason I spent four years hiding.””

Everyone froze.

Richard’s face changed.

Emily continued.

“He knows what happened the night Maya was born.””

My heart pounded.

“What happened?””

The line went silent.

Then Emily said:

“Claire…”

Her voice cracked.

“The baby they took from me wasn’t the only thing they changed that night.””

I felt cold.

“What do you mean?””

Emily whispered:

“They changed the birth records.””

I looked at Maya.

Then the file.

Then Richard.

And Emily said the words that made the entire room go silent.

“Claire… Maya isn’t the only child who was born that night.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Because suddenly, the biggest question wasn’t why Maya was taken.

May you like

It was:

*Who else was taken with her?*
