Chapter 6: The Secret Hidden Inside the Hospital Files

The video ended.

But nobody moved.

The phone screen went dark in my hand, yet the words remained.

*“She isn’t the only baby they did this to.””*

I looked at Vanessa.

For the first time since I had known her, she didn’t look powerful.

She looked exposed.

Like someone who had spent years hiding behind a locked door and had just realized the key was no longer in her possession.

“What did you do?””

My voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Vanessa stared at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“You’re right.””

I held up the phone.

“I don’t understand how you can stand there and look at a child after what you did.””

Her jaw tightened.

“You think you know everything because you watched a thirty-second video?””

“No.””

I looked at Maya.

“I know enough.””

Maya was standing behind me, holding onto my shirt.

She had stopped crying.

That scared me.

Children usually cry when they’re afraid.

When they stop crying, sometimes it means they’re trying too hard to be brave.

I crouched down.

“Sweetheart, go with Daddy for a minute.””

Maya looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“Are you mad at me?””

My heart broke.

“No, baby.””

I touched her cheek.

“I’m mad because grown-ups made bad choices.””

She whispered:

“Am I the bad choice?””

I closed my eyes for a second.

“No.””

I pulled her into my arms.

“You are the best thing that ever happened to me.””

Daniel took her hand gently.

“I’ll stay right there.””

Maya finally followed him inside.

The moment the door closed, I turned back to Vanessa.

“Start talking.””

She crossed her arms.

“I don’t owe you anything.””

“You owe Maya the truth.””

Something flashed across her face.

Guilt.

Just for a second.

Then it disappeared.

“You’re acting like I’m the villain.””

I almost laughed.

“You watched a little girl trapped in a hole.””

“I didn’t put her there.””

“Then who did?””

Silence.

That was the answer.

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I don’t know.””

“Liar.””

Her eyes snapped back to mine.

“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.””

“Then tell me.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

I stared at her.

“No?””

“Because if you know everything, you’ll destroy your own family.””

I felt something cold settle inside me.

“My family was destroyed the moment you started lying.””

Before Vanessa could answer, Daniel came back outside.

His face was pale.

“Maya fell asleep.””

I looked at him.

“Good.””

He looked between us.

“What did you find?””

I held up the phone.

“Your father wasn’t just involved with Maya.””

Daniel watched the video again.

His expression changed with every second.

When it ended, he looked at Vanessa.

“What is this?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Don’t pretend you’re innocent, Daniel.””

“I was a kid.””

“You knew enough.””

His face tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

She laughed bitterly.

“You really believed your father was protecting you?””

Daniel went silent.

I looked at him.

“Daniel?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I don’t understand.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Your father wasn’t adopting children.””

The words made the air disappear.

“He was controlling who got them.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“It means Maya wasn’t the first.””

A terrible feeling moved through my stomach.

“How many?””

She didn’t answer.

“How many children?””

Her silence was terrifying.

Daniel looked sick.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You remember the files.””

Daniel froze.

“What files?””

I looked at him.

“You know?””

He shook his head quickly.

“No.””

But his face betrayed him.

“You do.””

Daniel looked away.

And I felt another piece of my life break.

“How many secrets have you kept from me?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Claire…”

“How many?””

He swallowed.

“One.””

I stared at him.

“One?””

He nodded slowly.

“I found a file years ago.””

My heart pounded.

“Where?””

“In my father’s office.””

“And you didn’t tell anyone?””

“I didn’t understand what it was.””

“You found files about children and you didn’t ask questions?””

He looked ashamed.

“I was nineteen.””

“And?””

The anger in my voice surprised even me.

“Nineteen is old enough to know something is wrong.””

Daniel had no answer.

Vanessa interrupted.

“He wasn’t the one who created it.””

I looked at her.

“Then who did?””

She looked toward the house.

Toward Maya’s bedroom.

Then she said:

“Your father-in-law.””

A chill ran through me.

“But why?””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

This time, she looked genuinely afraid.

“Because he believed he could decide which families deserved children.””

The sentence was horrifying.

“He manipulated records. He pressured young mothers. He used money and connections.””

I stared at her.

“And you helped him.””

Vanessa didn’t deny it.

“I was young.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone says that when they don’t want to admit what they did.””

Her face tightened.

“You have no idea what he was capable of.””

“Then why protect him?””

She looked down.

For the first time, her voice became smaller.

“Because I was scared.””

I almost didn’t believe her.

“You?””

“Yes.””

She looked at the ground.

“He threatened me too.””

That surprised me.

“What?””

Vanessa looked up.

“I knew too much.””

The wind moved through the yard.

A strange silence settled over us.

“You’re saying you were a victim too?””

“No.””

She answered immediately.

“I’m saying I made choices.””

That honesty caught me off guard.

She continued.

“Bad ones.””

I watched her carefully.

For the first time, Vanessa wasn’t trying to win.

She was confessing.

But I still didn’t trust her.

“Why show me the video?””

She looked at me.

“Because he’s not finished.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Vanessa whispered:

“My brother.””

I frowned.

“Your brother?””

She nodded.

“Daniel’s father wasn’t working alone.””

A horrible thought entered my mind.

“Who else?””

Vanessa looked toward the road.

Then back at me.

“The person who has been sending those messages.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

All three of us froze.

Unknown number.

Again.

I opened it.

One picture.

A picture taken from outside my house.

My breath stopped.

It showed Maya sleeping in her bedroom.

Taken minutes ago.

Under the picture was a message.

*“You should have left the past buried.””*

My hands started shaking.

Someone was watching us.

Someone was close.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Call the police.””

But before I could move, another message arrived.

This time, only four words.

*“Ask Vanessa about Lily.””*

I looked up.

Vanessa’s face went completely white.

“Who is Lily?””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

Her lips trembled.

Then she whispered:

“She was the first one.””

My heart sank.

“The first what?””

Vanessa looked toward Maya’s bedroom window.

“The first child my brother took.””

I stared at her.

“And where is she now?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I don’t know.””

Then she opened her eyes.

May you like

And said the words that changed everything.

“But I know who does.””
