Chapter 5: The Signature That Was Never Hers
The phone almost slipped from my hand.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The name echoed in my mind.
Vanessa.
The same woman who had stood beside the pit.
The same woman who watched my daughter cry for help.
The same woman who looked me in the eyes and told me I didn’t know the truth.
I slowly turned toward Daniel.
He was staring at me.
Not with confusion.
Not with disbelief.
With fear.
And that scared me more than anything.
“You knew.””
My voice was barely above a whisper.
Daniel looked away.
“Claire…”
“You knew Vanessa was involved.””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
I studied his face.
The hesitation.
The panic.
The way his hands tightened into fists.
“You’re lying.””
He shook his head.
“I didn’t know she forged anything.””
“Forged?””
The word caught in my throat.
Emily’s voice was still on the phone.
“Claire?””
I brought the phone back to my ear.
“I’m here.””
There was silence.
Then Emily spoke.
“I should have told you years ago.””
My eyes burned.
“Why didn’t you?””
A painful breath came through the speaker.
“Because every time I tried, someone stopped me.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Who?””
Emily didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Your husband’s family.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
The truth was no longer hidden.
It was standing in front of me.
I walked out of Maya’s room, still holding the phone.
Daniel followed.
“Claire, wait.””
I turned around.
“No.””
My voice was calm now.
That scared him.
Because anger was easier to handle.
Calm meant I was finally thinking.
“You don’t get to explain this away anymore.””
“I’m not trying to.””
“Then tell me everything.””
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
“Maya…”
“She’s downstairs with Vanessa.””
His face changed.
I saw it.
A flash of realization.
A moment of fear.
And suddenly, we both understood the same thing.
Vanessa was alone with Maya.
I moved immediately.
But before I reached the stairs, my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Emily.
*Don’t let Vanessa near Maya. She has done this before.*
My heart stopped.
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“What?””
I showed him the message.
His face lost all color.
“No.””
“What?””
He stepped back.
“No, that’s not possible.””
“Daniel.””
He looked terrified.
“She promised she would never go near Maya again.””
The words hit me.
Again.
“What do you mean again?””
Daniel looked like he wanted to take the words back.
But it was too late.
“Daniel.””
He sat down on the edge of the bed.
“I need to tell you something.””
I crossed my arms.
“You’ve had four years.””
He swallowed.
“When Maya was two months old…”
I waited.
“Emily tried to stop the adoption.””
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?””
“She went to the house.””
“What house?””
“My father’s house.””
I felt a chill.
“And?””
Daniel looked down.
“Vanessa was there.””
The room became silent.
“She told Emily the papers were already signed.””
“But they weren’t.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“No.””
My hands clenched.
“What did Vanessa do?””
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“She convinced Emily that fighting would only make things worse.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He looked at me.
“She threatened her.””
The anger came back instantly.
“What did she threaten?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then:
“She threatened to tell the court Emily was unstable.””
I stared at him.
“Because she wanted the baby?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why?””
“I don’t know.””
I thought about Vanessa’s expression.
The satisfaction in her eyes.
The way she had said:
“You still think you saved her.””
She wasn’t just hiding a secret.
She was protecting something.
I grabbed my keys.
“We’re leaving.””
Daniel stood.
“Where?””
“To find Maya.””
We rushed downstairs.
But the living room was empty.
My heart dropped.
“Maya?””
No answer.
The front door was open.
I ran outside.
“Maya!””
Then I saw her.
Standing near Vanessa.
My daughter was holding something in her hand.
A small envelope.
Vanessa looked up.
And smiled.
The moment she saw me, she knew.
She knew I understood.
“Maya,” I said carefully.
“Come here, sweetheart.””
My daughter looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
“She gave me this.””
My eyes moved to the envelope.
“What is it?””
Vanessa answered.
“The truth.””
I stepped closer.
“Move away from my daughter.””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“You still don’t trust me.””
“No.””
I didn’t hesitate.
“I don’t.””
For once, Vanessa looked hurt.
Only for a second.
Then it disappeared.
“You should.””
“Why?””
“Because I’m the only person who has been honest with you.””
I looked at her.
“You put a child in a pit.””
Her expression changed.
“I didn’t push her.””
The words froze me.
Not “I didn’t put her there.””
Not “I don’t know what happened.””
Just:
“I didn’t push her.””
I stepped closer.
“Then how did she get there?””
Vanessa looked at Maya.
“Ask her.””
I immediately pulled Maya behind me.
“No.””
Vanessa sighed.
“Claire, you’re making the same mistake Emily made.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What mistake?””
“Believing everyone who says they love you.””
The sentence bothered me.
Because it sounded rehearsed.
Like she had been waiting years to say it.
Then Maya whispered:
“Mommy.””
I turned.
She held up the envelope.
“There’s a picture inside.””
I took it carefully.
Inside was a photograph.
My fingers went numb.
It showed Emily.
Holding baby Maya.
But standing beside her was another person.
Vanessa.
And behind them was a hospital room.
On the back of the photo was a date.
The day Maya was born.
Below it was a handwritten sentence.
*“Vanessa knew the baby was alive before Claire ever met her.””*
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face finally changed.
Not anger.
Not confidence.
Fear.
“You weren’t supposed to find that.””
My voice became quiet.
“Why?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
“You should have stayed out of this.””
Daniel stared.
“You did this.””
She smiled.
“No.””
Then she looked at me.
“I fixed a problem.””
The words made my skin crawl.
“What problem?””
Vanessa walked closer.
“You think this story is about Emily losing her daughter.””
She shook her head.
“It’s not.””
I held Maya tighter.
“Then what is it about?””
Vanessa looked directly into my eyes.
“It’s about why Maya was taken from Emily in the first place.””
Nobody moved.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Because Maya wasn’t supposed to survive.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Daniel stepped back.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You really don’t know everything either.””
Then she pulled out her phone.
She opened a video.
And held it toward me.
“Watch this.””
I didn’t want to.
Every instinct told me not to.
But I pressed play.
The screen showed a hospital hallway.
A younger Vanessa.
A crying Emily.
And a nurse holding a file.
Then I heard a voice.
A voice that made my entire body freeze.
My own father-in-law.
“Once the papers are signed, nobody can ever connect this child back to her.””
The video continued.
Then Vanessa said something that made me drop the phone.
May you like
Something that changed the entire story.
“She isn’t the only baby they did this to.””
