Chapter 7: The Girl Who Was Erased

The words hung in the air.

*“I know who does.””*

I stared at Vanessa, waiting for her to explain.

But she didn’t.

She just stood there, looking toward the house where my daughter was sleeping.

Like she was seeing something from the past.

Something she wished she could forget.

“Who?””

My voice came out sharper than I intended.

Vanessa looked at me.

“My brother.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“No.””

The answer confused me.

“Your brother?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Your father wasn’t my brother.””

The silence that followed felt impossible.

Daniel frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa took a slow breath.

“My last name isn’t Bennett.””

I felt a chill.

“What?””

She looked at Daniel.

“You were told I was your father’s sister.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You weren’t?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

My mind struggled to catch up.

“Then who are you?””

Her eyes moved toward Maya’s room.

“I was his assistant.””

The words landed like a stone.

Daniel stepped back.

“You worked for my father?””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

“Eight years.””

I watched Vanessa carefully.

Eight years.

Eight years close to a man who had apparently hidden children, manipulated records, and destroyed families.

“You expect me to believe you were just an assistant?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I expect you to believe I was part of it.””

The honesty surprised me.

Daniel looked angry.

“Then why are you pretending you care now?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because I saw what he did to those families.””

She swallowed.

“And I stayed silent.””

Nobody spoke.

The confession was heavy.

Not because it erased what she had done.

But because it confirmed something worse.

There were more victims.

More secrets.

More children.

I crossed my arms.

“Tell me about Lily.””

Vanessa looked away.

“She was four years old.””

My heart tightened.

The same age as Maya.

“She had dark hair. Brown eyes. She carried a stuffed rabbit everywhere.””

I felt a strange pain in my chest.

“Why are you telling me this?””

“Because she reminded me of Maya.””

The answer was quiet.

“She was scared too.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What happened to her?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“My brother changed her records.””

I froze.

“Changed?””

“He created a fake custody dispute. He made her mother look unstable.””

“That’s impossible.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“It’s not.””

Her voice became colder.

“He had money. Lawyers. People who owed him favors.””

Daniel looked sick.

“My father did this?””

“Yes.””

“And Lily?””

Vanessa looked down.

“She disappeared.””

The word made my stomach twist.

“Disappeared?””

“No body. No evidence. Nothing.””

Daniel covered his mouth.

I could see the horror on his face.

But mine was different.

Because I wasn’t only thinking about Lily.

I was thinking about Maya.

About my daughter.

About a woman who had spent years trying to hide the truth.

My phone buzzed again.

Everyone looked at it.

Another message.

This time, a video.

I hesitated.

Then opened it.

The screen showed a room.

A small room.

A child’s room.

There was a bed.

A bookshelf.

A stuffed rabbit sitting on a pillow.

My breathing stopped.

Because I recognized the rabbit.

I had seen it before.

In the photograph of Lily.

The video continued.

A man walked into the room.

His face was hidden.

But his voice was clear.

“You should have listened.””

Then the video ended.

Daniel grabbed my phone.

“Who sent this?””

I shook my head.

“No idea.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“That room…”

“What?””

She pointed at the screen.

“That’s the old Bennett estate.””

Daniel looked at her.

“My father’s house?””

“Yes.””

My blood ran cold.

“Someone is there?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“He never sold it.””

Daniel stared.

“I thought it was abandoned.””

“So did everyone.””

My eyes moved toward Maya’s room.

The thought hit me instantly.

If someone could enter that old house…

Someone could enter ours.

“We need to leave.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

But before we moved, a sound came from inside.

A scream.

“MOMMY!””

My body reacted before my brain.

I ran.

I flew up the stairs.

“Maya!””

Her bedroom door was open.

She was standing beside her bed, crying.

I grabbed her.

“What happened?””

She pointed toward the window.

“There was a man.””

My blood froze.

“What man?””

She shook.

“He was looking at me.””

Daniel entered behind me.

“Did you see his face?””

Maya hid against my chest.

“No.””

I checked the window.

Nothing.

Only darkness outside.

But then I saw something on the floor.

A piece of paper.

I picked it up.

My hands started trembling.

It was a drawing.

A child’s drawing.

A little girl.

A house.

And three people standing outside.

A mother.

A father.

A child.

But written above the child was a name.

*LILY.*

I looked at Vanessa, who had just entered the room.

The moment she saw it, she stopped.

“No.””

I turned.

“You know this?””

She slowly walked closer.

The paper shook in her hand.

“This is impossible.””

“Why?””

Because the handwriting was familiar.

She looked at me.

“Because Lily drew this.””

My heart raced.

“What?””

Vanessa touched the paper.

“She used to draw the same picture every day.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Why would it be here?””

Nobody answered.

Then Maya spoke softly.

“Mommy?””

I turned.

“What, sweetheart?””

She pointed toward the closet.

“There was a woman.””

My blood ran cold.

“What woman?””

Maya’s face was pale.

“She was crying.””

Daniel moved toward the closet.

I grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

Something felt wrong.

Slowly, he opened the closet door.

Inside was nothing.

Just clothes.

But on the floor was another envelope.

This one was addressed to me.

Not Claire.

Not Mommy.

Just:

*To the woman raising my daughter.*

My fingers went numb.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was shaky.

The first line made my heart stop.

*“If you are reading this, it means I finally found a way to reach Maya.””*

I looked at Vanessa.

Then Daniel.

Then my daughter.

The letter continued.

*“My name is Emily Carter. I am not asking you to give her back.””*

I swallowed.

The next sentence was worse.

*“I am asking you to protect her from the person who has been pretending to protect her.””*

A cold feeling moved through me.

I looked around the room.

At Daniel.

At Vanessa.

At everyone.

Because suddenly, I realized something.

The person who had been hiding the truth for four years…

Was not just trying to keep Maya away from Emily.

They were trying to keep Maya away from me.

The letter had one final sentence.

May you like

And when I read it, my entire body went still.

*“Claire, the person you trust most is the reason Maya was almost never found.””*
