Chapter 9: The Man Behind The Threat

The name hung in the air.

Adrian.

Nobody in the room seemed to understand what it meant.

Except my father.

And the expression on his face told me everything.

He knew this man.

Not casually.

Not from some business meeting.

Not from a passing introduction.

This was someone from his past.

Someone he had tried to forget.

The ballroom that had once been filled with music and celebration now felt like a courtroom.

Everyone was waiting for someone to confess.

Adrian walked further inside.

He was older than my father, perhaps by ten years. His silver hair was neatly combed back, his suit expensive but simple. He didn’t look like someone who needed to threaten people.

He looked like someone who was used to people being afraid of him.

He smiled.

“After all these years, you still look the same, Enzo.””

My father didn’t respond.

Marcello stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

Adrian looked at him.

Then smiled slightly.

“So this is Marcello.””

The way he said my brother’s name made my skin crawl.

Not like he was meeting him.

Like he had been studying him.

Marcello’s expression hardened.

“How do you know me?””

Adrian looked around the room.

“Because your father built his empire using my family’s money.””

The room exploded with whispers.

My father’s face changed.

“Enough.””

Adrian laughed.

“Still controlling every conversation?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What does this have to do with Emma?””

Adrian looked at him.

“Everything.””

Sofia immediately moved Emma behind her.

That small movement didn’t escape anyone.

Adrian noticed.

And smiled.

“Still protective, I see.””

Sofia’s face went pale.

“You.””

The word came out like a whisper.

Daniel looked at her.

“You know him?””

Sofia didn’t answer.

She was staring at Adrian like she was looking at a nightmare.

Marcello noticed.

“You threatened them.””

Adrian didn’t deny it.

“I gave them a warning.””

My father stepped forward.

“You stayed away for three years.””

“And you thought that meant I disappeared?””

Adrian smiled.

“No, Enzo.””

He looked around.

“I was waiting.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“Waiting for what?””

“For your family to destroy itself.””

The words were cold.

And somehow, they sounded true.

I looked at my father.

“How do you know Isabella?””

Adrian looked at her.

Then back at me.

“Because Isabella came to me first.””

Everyone turned.

Isabella froze.

Marcello looked at her.

“What?””

Adrian continued.

“She didn’t meet Enzo because of the inheritance.””

He smiled.

“She met me because she needed money.””

Isabella shook her head.

“That’s not true.””

Adrian looked at her.

“You begged me.””

The room became silent.

“You told me your debts were impossible.””

Isabella looked away.

“You promised me help.””

“Yes.””

Adrian nodded.

“And I offered it.””

Marcello’s eyes narrowed.

“What did you want in return?””

Adrian smiled.

“Nothing.””

Nobody believed him.

Not one person.

People like Adrian never gave something without expecting something back.

Daniel spoke.

“You wanted control.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Smart.””

My father’s face hardened.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Adrian laughed.

“That’s interesting coming from you.””

He turned toward my father.

“You were the one who made the deal.””

My stomach dropped.

Everyone looked at my father.

Marcello whispered:

“What deal?””

My father said nothing.

Adrian answered for him.

“Three years ago, Enzo came to me.””

“No.””

My father’s voice was sharp.

“Stop.””

Adrian ignored him.

“He knew my family wanted repayment.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Repayment for what?””

Adrian smiled.

“Your father’s business.””

He looked at Marcello.

“Your grandfather borrowed money years ago.””

My father stepped forward.

“That debt was settled.””

“Was it?””

Adrian pulled out a folder.

He tossed it onto a nearby table.

The papers scattered.

Contracts.

Documents.

Signatures.

Marcello picked one up.

Then his expression changed.

“Dad?””

My father looked away.

I felt my chest tighten.

Another secret.

Another hidden truth.

How many more were there?

Adrian continued.

“When the debt became too large, Enzo made a deal.””

My father whispered:

“Don’t.””

“You promised me access to the Moretti family assets.””

Marcello stared.

“What?””

My father shook his head.

“I was protecting the company.””

“No.””

Adrian smiled.

“You were protecting your reputation.””

The words hit harder because they sounded familiar.

The same accusation Marcello had made earlier.

My father looked older suddenly.

Tired.

Defeated.

“I made mistakes.””

Marcello laughed bitterly.

“Mistakes?””

He pointed around the room.

“Everyone keeps calling these mistakes.””

His voice broke.

“But mistakes don’t take three years away from a child.””

Nobody answered.

Adrian watched the family fall apart.

And he seemed satisfied.

Then Sofia spoke.

“Why did you threaten Isabella?””

Adrian looked at her.

“Because she broke the agreement.””

“What agreement?””

Adrian smiled.

“The one where she was supposed to marry Marcello.””

The room froze.

Marcello stared.

“She was supposed to marry me?””

Adrian nodded.

“Of course.””

He looked at Isabella.

“You were never meant to love him.””

Isabella closed her eyes.

The truth finally sounded uglier than any lie.

“I told you I changed my mind.””

Adrian laughed.

“No.””

“You got greedy.””

Isabella flinched.

“You wanted more.””

Daniel looked disgusted.

“So the pregnancy lie…”

Adrian nodded.

“Was supposed to guarantee the marriage.””

Marcello stared at Isabella.

“You planned all of this.””

Isabella started crying.

“I didn’t plan everything.””

“But you planned enough.””

The silence that followed was devastating.

Because even now, Isabella was not completely innocent.

She had been manipulated.

But she had also manipulated others.

Both things could be true.

Then Adrian looked at Emma.

The smile disappeared from his face.

“And then the baby survived.””

Everyone went still.

Adrian continued.

“That ruined everything.””

Sofia tightened her arms around Emma.

“You wanted her gone.””

Adrian looked at her.

“I wanted the problem removed.””

My blood ran cold.

Marcello moved immediately.

He stepped between Adrian and Emma.

“You come near my daughter, and I swear—”

Adrian smiled.

“There he is.””

“What?””

“The man I wanted you to become.””

Marcello frowned.

Adrian looked at my brother.

“You spent your life following your father’s rules.””

He glanced at me.

“The perfect son.””

Then at my father.

“The perfect family.””

His smile faded.

“But now you finally know what they’re capable of.””

My father stepped forward.

“Leave.””

Adrian looked amused.

“You still think you’re in control.””

Then he pulled out his phone.

He pressed a button.

A video appeared on the ballroom screen.

Everyone turned.

The screen showed hospital footage.

Three years earlier.

A newborn baby.

Emma.

And beside her…

My father.

The room went silent.

Marcello stared.

“Dad?””

My father looked horrified.

Because he remembered.

The video continued.

My father standing beside the hospital bed.

Holding a document.

Then Isabella entering.

Then Adrian.

The three of them together.

A secret meeting.

Marcello looked sick.

“What did you do?””

My father whispered:

“I was trying to fix it.””

The video continued.

Adrian’s voice came through the speakers.

“You promised she would disappear.””

My father’s voice answered:

“She will.””

Everyone froze.

Marcello looked at him.

“No.””

My father’s face collapsed.

“No, you don’t understand.””

But the video kept playing.

And then came the sentence that destroyed everything.

My father’s voice.

Clear.

Unmistakable.

“I’ll make sure Marcello never knows the baby survived.””

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Marcello stared at his father.

The man who had protected him.

The man who had raised him.

The man who had helped erase three years of his life.

Then the screen went black.

Adrian smiled.

“Now you know the whole truth.””

But I knew something.

Something Adrian didn’t expect.

Because while everyone was staring at the screen…

Lily was staring at Adrian.

Her small face had gone pale.

She pulled my sleeve.

“Mommy.””

I looked down.

“What is it?””

She pointed at Adrian.

And whispered:

“That’s the man from upstairs.””

My heart stopped.

Because Adrian had never been upstairs.

Not tonight.

Not according to anyone.

But Lily knew.

And then she said the words that revealed the final missing piece:

“He was the one who made the lady’s belly fall off.””
