Chapter 6: The Betrayal Inside The Family

Nobody moved.

Nobody even seemed to breathe.

Marcello held the photograph in his hand, staring at it like it was a weapon.

I watched his eyes move from the image.

Then slowly upward.

Toward the person standing across the ballroom.

The person everyone had trusted.

The person who had defended Isabella.

My stomach tightened before I even saw who it was.

Because some part of me already knew.

The photograph showed Isabella sitting at a restaurant.

Across from her was my father.

Enzo Moretti.

The man who had spent the last hour demanding answers.

The man who had looked disgusted by her lies.

The man who had told everyone to let Marcello speak.

My father.

The room exploded into whispers.

“No.””

My mother’s voice was barely audible.

My father looked at the photograph.

Then at Daniel.

“This is impossible.””

Daniel didn’t react.

“I thought so too.””

My father’s face hardened.

“You’re accusing me?””

“I’m showing the truth.””

Marcello looked between them.

His voice was quiet.

“Dad?””

That one word hurt more than any accusation.

Because my brother wasn’t asking like a son asking his father.

He was asking like a man who was afraid of the answer.

My father stepped forward.

“Marcello, listen to me.””

But Marcello lifted the photograph.

“You met Isabella privately?””

My father didn’t answer immediately.

That pause was enough.

A lifetime of trust could be destroyed in seconds.

“You did.””

My father looked away.

“I can explain.””

The entire family had heard that phrase too many times that night.

I felt something inside me break.

Because Isabella’s lies had been shocking.

But my father?

That was different.

My father had always been the foundation of our family.

Strict.

Proud.

Sometimes impossible.

But loyal.

At least, I thought he was.

Daniel crossed his arms.

“Tell them what you discussed.””

My father looked at him.

“Stay out of this.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was firm.

“Not anymore.””

Marcello looked at my father.

“What did you discuss?””

My father was silent.

Then he said:

“The inheritance.””

The room went cold.

My mother covered her mouth.

I felt Lily’s small hand wrap around mine.

The inheritance.

Everyone knew what that meant.

Our grandmother had left behind a significant fortune.

But she had added a condition.

The family members who wanted access to certain assets had to remain united.

No public scandals.

No criminal disputes.

No legal conflicts that damaged the Moretti name.

My grandmother believed reputation was part of wealth.

My father had always respected that.

Until now.

Marcello stared.

“You helped her because of Grandma’s inheritance?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

My father looked exhausted.

“Because I knew.””

The words hit everyone.

“Knew what?”” I asked.

My father looked at Isabella.

“I knew she wasn’t pregnant.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcello froze.

“You knew?””

My father nodded slowly.

“I found out two months ago.””

The anger that crossed my brother’s face was immediate.

“You knew?””

My father looked at him.

“I was trying to handle it.””

“Handle it?””

Marcello’s voice rose.

“My child was alive.””

“I didn’t know that.””

“But you knew she was lying.””

My father had no answer.

And that was worse.

Marcello stepped closer.

“You let me believe I was going to be a father.””

“I thought I could fix this.””

“No.””

My brother shook his head.

“You thought you could control this.””

My father looked away.

I knew that expression.

He had done that my whole life.

When he made a mistake, he didn’t admit it.

He calculated.

He negotiated.

He tried to solve the consequences without acknowledging the damage.

But this wasn’t a business problem.

This was his family.

His son.

His granddaughter.

“How did you find out?”” Marcello asked.

My father sighed.

“I saw Isabella removing the fake belly.””

The room went silent again.

I looked at Isabella.

“You saw?””

My father nodded.

“I came upstairs to get something from the blue room.””

“When?””

“Two months ago.””

Marcello stared.

“And you said nothing?””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“She begged me.””

Everyone looked at Isabella.

“She told me she had lost the baby.””

My father continued.

“She said she was afraid you would leave her.””

Marcello laughed bitterly.

“So you believed her?””

“I believed she made a terrible mistake.””

Daniel shook his head.

“She made a plan.””

My father ignored him.

“I thought if I confronted her, she would disappear.””

Marcello’s expression changed.

“She already disappeared.””

The words were quiet.

But they destroyed my father.

Because they were true.

My father had spent his life protecting the family name.

And now he had protected the wrong person.

Daniel walked forward.

“There’s more.””

My father looked at him.

“You’ve said enough.””

“No.””

Daniel pointed at the photograph.

“You need to tell them why you met her.””

My father’s face darkened.

“I told you.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You told them half the truth.””

Everyone stared.

My father’s silence confirmed it.

Marcello’s voice became cold.

“What else?””

My father looked down.

Then he said:

“She asked me for money.””

My heart sank.

“How much?””

“Five hundred thousand dollars.””

My mother gasped.

“For what?””

My father answered quietly.

“She said she needed to move away.””

Marcello stared.

“And you considered giving it to her?””

My father didn’t respond.

That was answer enough.

“You were going to pay her to leave?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

My father looked at Isabella.

“I was going to make sure the child was protected.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Not the child.””

Everyone looked at him.

“The lie.””

My father’s expression changed.

Daniel continued.

“You weren’t trying to protect Emma.””

The room went silent.

“You were trying to prevent a scandal before the inheritance was finalized.””

My father’s face hardened.

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

Daniel looked around.

“Ask him.””

Nobody did.

Because nobody needed to.

My father had always cared about the Moretti name.

Sometimes more than anything else.

Including feelings.

Including apologies.

Including truth.

Marcello looked devastated.

“I don’t know who I can trust anymore.””

The sentence broke my heart.

Because my brother wasn’t just talking about Isabella.

He was talking about all of us.

Then my phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

I pulled it from my purse.

One new message.

From an unknown number.

My blood turned cold.

Because the message contained a photo.

A recent photo.

Of Lily.

Standing outside the ballroom earlier that night.

And beneath it were six words.

*“The wrong child found the truth.””*

My hand started shaking.

Marcello noticed.

“What is it?””

I couldn’t answer.

I just handed him the phone.

His face changed immediately.

“Who sent this?””

Nobody knew.

Then Isabella whispered something.

Something so quiet I almost missed it.

But Daniel heard.

And his expression changed.

“What did you say?””

Isabella looked terrified.

“I didn’t send that.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You know who did.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Isabella.””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“He warned me.””

The room froze.

Marcello stared.

“Who warned you?””

Isabella looked toward the entrance.

Toward the dark windows.

Toward the city outside.

Then she whispered:

“The person who helped me hide Emma.””

My father frowned.

“Who?””

Isabella didn’t answer.

Because at that exact moment, the ballroom lights went out.

Complete darkness swallowed the room.

Someone screamed.

A chair fell.

Lily cried out.

“Mommy!””

I rushed toward her voice.

Then the lights came back.

Only a few seconds had passed.

But someone was missing.

I looked around.

My daughter was safe in my arms.

Marcello was standing beside me.

Daniel was near the staircase.

My father was by the table.

But Isabella?

She was gone.

And on the floor where she had been standing…

May you like

Was a single envelope.

With Marcello’s name written on it.
