Chapter 4: The Truth Behind The Missing Baby
The man standing at the ballroom entrance looked like a ghost.
Not because he was pale.
Not because he looked weak.
Because everyone in the room had already buried him.
Daniel Russo stood beneath the golden lights wearing a dark coat, his face older than the photographs I had seen. A thin scar ran from the edge of his eyebrow down toward his cheek.
The exact scar Lily had described.
The room erupted.
Guests whispered.
Someone dropped a glass.
My mother pulled Lily closer.
My father stared at Daniel like he was trying to decide whether he was seeing a person or a nightmare.
Marcello didn’t move.
He just stared.
“You’re dead.””
Daniel’s expression was empty.
“I know.””
The answer made everyone uncomfortable.
Because it wasn’t a denial.
It wasn’t an explanation.
It was something much worse.
An admission.
Marcello stepped forward.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at Isabella.
“She told everyone I was dead.””
Isabella shook her head quickly.
“Daniel, don’t.””
His eyes moved to her.
The pain in his face was obvious.
Not anger.
Pain.
“You’ve lied long enough.””
Marcello’s hands tightened into fists.
“You have five seconds to explain why a dead man is standing in my house.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Because your fiancée built her entire life on a lie.””
The words landed like a punch.
I watched Isabella’s confidence disappear completely.
For months, she had controlled every conversation.
Every emotion.
Every person in this family.
But now?
She had lost control.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
“Please.””
He shook his head.
“No more.””
Marcello looked between them.
“Start talking.””
Daniel walked slowly into the ballroom.
Nobody stopped him.
Nobody knew what to do.
He reached the center of the room and looked at the fake pregnancy belly being carried downstairs by one of the guests who had discovered it.
His jaw tightened.
“So she finally got caught.””
Isabella’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t want this.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You never want the consequences.””
A silence followed.
I noticed something then.
Daniel wasn’t looking at Isabella like someone who hated her.
He was looking at her like someone who had once loved her.
And that made everything worse.
Marcello stepped closer.
“You know about the baby.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“Whose baby was it?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Mine.””
The room went silent.
Even though everyone expected the answer.
Hearing it out loud was different.
Marcello closed his eyes.
For a moment, I thought he might collapse.
The man who had spent six months preparing a nursery.
The man who had told everyone he was going to be a father.
The man who had dreamed about a future that never existed.
He opened his eyes.
“And Isabella knew?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“She knew before she met me?””
“Yes.””
Marcello looked at Isabella.
“How long?””
Isabella whispered:
“Six months.””
The entire family reacted.
My mother stepped back.
My father’s face hardened.
“You met my son while you were still connected to another man?””
Isabella immediately shook her head.
“No, it wasn’t like that.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“It was exactly like that.””
She looked at him.
“You disappeared.””
His expression changed.
Because that accusation hurt.
“I didn’t disappear.””
“You left me.””
“I left because you told me you needed space.””
“I was pregnant.””
“And I wanted to marry you.””
The words shocked everyone.
Daniel looked around.
“I wanted to take responsibility.””
Isabella looked down.
“But you left.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice became stronger.
“You left me.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel reached into his coat pocket.
He pulled out a folded document.
“I have proof.””
Marcello stared.
“What proof?””
Daniel handed it to him.
“My hospital records.””
Marcello unfolded the paper.
Daniel continued.
“Three years ago, Isabella lost the baby.””
I looked at Isabella.
She looked away.
“After that, she blamed me.””
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“She said she needed time. She said she couldn’t look at me because I reminded her of what happened.””
He swallowed.
“But three months later, I found out she was engaged to you.””
Marcello looked up.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel’s expression was complicated.
“Because I tried.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I contacted him.””
He pointed at Marcello.
“Several times.””
Marcello frowned.
“I never received anything.””
Daniel nodded.
“Because Isabella intercepted them.””
Isabella immediately spoke.
“That’s a lie.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Is it?””
He pulled out his phone.
“Because I saved everything.””
He opened his messages.
There were dozens.
Emails.
Texts.
Calls.
All marked unanswered.
Then Daniel showed a screenshot.
A message sent from his number.
*“Marcello needs to know the truth.””*
Under it was Isabella’s reply.
*“Stay away from us.””*
The room went quiet.
Marcello stared at the screen.
Then slowly looked at Isabella.
“You blocked him.””
She started crying.
“I was protecting us.””
“No.””
Marcello’s voice was almost a whisper.
“You were protecting yourself.””
That sentence broke something in her.
She looked around desperately.
“You don’t understand.””
I almost felt tired hearing those words.
Everyone who lied said them.
You don’t understand.
But sometimes people understood perfectly.
They just didn’t forgive.
Daniel stepped forward.
“There’s more.””
Marcello looked at him.
“What else?””
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
“The fake pregnancy wasn’t only about making you believe she was having your child.””
My stomach tightened.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel looked at Isabella.
“She needed access.””
Marcello frowned.
“Access to what?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
And that hesitation scared me.
Because whatever came next was bigger.
“She knew about your grandmother’s inheritance.””
My father’s expression changed.
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“She told me before she met Marcello.””
Isabella looked horrified.
“Daniel.””
But he continued.
“She said she needed to marry into the Moretti family because her debts were impossible to pay.””
Marcello looked at Isabella.
“You said your family’s debt was three million.””
She said nothing.
Daniel shook his head.
“That was only part of it.””
My father stepped forward.
“How much?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Almost eight million.””
The room exploded with whispers.
Eight million.
That was not a mistake.
That was not desperation.
That was a plan.
Marcello looked at Isabella.
“Did you choose me because of my family?””
Her tears fell.
“At first…”
Nobody moved.
“At first?””
She covered her mouth.
And that answer was enough.
Marcello looked away.
I saw something break inside him.
Not anger.
Not jealousy.
Trust.
The one thing that was hardest to rebuild.
Then Daniel spoke again.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
Marcello looked exhausted.
“What now?””
Daniel reached into his pocket again.
This time, he pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this three days ago.””
He handed it to Marcello.
“What is it?””
Daniel looked at Isabella.
“The reason she was so desperate to keep pretending.””
Marcello opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A hospital bracelet.
And a document.
He read the top line.
Then his entire expression changed.
I watched his face lose all emotion.
“Impossible.””
My heart raced.
“What is it?””
Marcello didn’t answer.
He looked at Isabella.
Then at Daniel.
Then back at the paper.
His voice came out barely above a whisper.
“You told me the baby was gone.””
Isabella started crying.
“Marcello…”
He held up the document.
“But this says the baby survived.””
Nobody moved.
The room went completely silent.
Daniel looked at me.
And in that moment, I understood.
The fake belly.
The fake appointments.
The fake story.
They were only hiding one truth.
The biggest lie had never been about a pregnancy.
It was about a child.
Marcello looked at Isabella.
His face was full of disbelief.
“Where is my baby?””
Isabella said nothing.
Then Daniel answered for her.
“She’s three years old.””
My breath stopped.
Three years old.
The same age as Lily.
The same age as—
I looked down at my daughter.
And for the first time that night…
I wondered why Lily had recognized Isabella upstairs.
Because maybe Lily wasn’t the only child involved in this secret.
May you like
Maybe the little girl everyone had ignored…
Was the one person who knew the truth all along.
