Chapter 8: The Sister Who Stole A Daughter

The little girl standing beside Sofia looked exactly like the photograph.

Dark curls.

Small hands wrapped around Sofia’s fingers.

A nervous expression on her face.

Emma.

Marcello had spent three years imagining this moment.

I knew that because I knew my brother.

He had imagined a hospital room.

A first meeting.

A chance to hold his daughter.

A chance to hear her call him something other than a stranger.

But he never imagined meeting her in the middle of a family disaster.

With half the truth still buried.

Sofia stepped into the ballroom slowly.

Everyone stared.

Especially Isabella.

Because the look between the two sisters said more than words ever could.

There was fear.

There was anger.

And there was something worse.

Betrayal.

Marcello couldn’t move.

His eyes stayed on Emma.

The little girl looked around the room.

Confused by all the adults staring at her.

Then she looked at Isabella.

“Mommy?””

Isabella immediately walked toward her.

But Sofia stepped between them.

“No.””

The single word shocked everyone.

Isabella stopped.

“What are you doing?””

Sofia’s eyes filled with tears.

“For once, I’m telling the truth.””

The room became silent.

Marcello finally found his voice.

“Is that Emma?””

Sofia looked at him.

“Yes.””

His lips parted.

“And you knew?””

Sofia nodded.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

You could see it on his face.

Not because he expected strangers to betray him.

Because he expected family to protect him.

Marcello looked at Emma again.

“She knows who I am?””

Sofia hesitated.

That hesitation destroyed him.

“She knows your name.””

“But?””

Sofia looked down.

“She doesn’t know you’re her father.””

Marcello closed his eyes.

Three years.

Three years stolen from both of them.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You helped them.””

Sofia looked at him.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Sofia didn’t answer immediately.

She looked at Isabella.

Then at Emma.

Then finally at Marcello.

“Because I was afraid.””

Marcello laughed softly.

Another person.

Another excuse.

Another version of fear.

Everyone had been afraid.

And somehow, Marcello was the one who paid the price.

“Afraid of what?”” he asked.

Sofia swallowed.

“Of what would happen if the truth came out.””

“What truth?””

She looked at Isabella.

“The night Emma was born.””

The words made the room tense.

Because everyone knew.

That was the missing piece.

The thing nobody had explained.

The reason behind three years of lies.

Sofia took a deep breath.

“Isabella didn’t lose the baby.””

Marcello stared.

“We know that.””

“No.””

Sofia shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

She looked at Emma.

“She didn’t lose the baby because Emma was never supposed to survive.””

The room went completely still.

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Sofia looked at me.

Then at Marcello.

“It means the doctors told Isabella something was wrong.””

Marcello frowned.

“What?””

Sofia continued.

“During the pregnancy, there were complications. The doctors warned her that the baby might not survive.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“I didn’t know that.””

“Because Isabella didn’t tell you.””

Sofia looked down.

“She didn’t tell anyone.””

Marcello stared.

“Why?””

Sofia’s voice became quieter.

“Because she blamed herself.””

For a moment, I saw the pain behind Isabella’s actions.

Not an excuse.

Not forgiveness.

Just pain.

Sofia continued.

“When Emma was born, Isabella thought she was going to lose her.””

Marcello looked at Emma.

“But she didn’t.””

“No.””

Sofia shook her head.

“Emma survived.””

Everyone was silent.

“Then why hide her?””

Sofia looked at Isabella.

“Because after Emma was born, Isabella received a phone call.””

“From who?”” Daniel asked.

Sofia hesitated.

Then she answered.

“Someone who threatened her.””

My father’s expression changed.

“What kind of threat?””

Sofia looked toward him.

“A threat against Emma.””

The room went quiet.

Marcello stepped forward.

“Who?””

Sofia looked afraid again.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I never saw the person.””

“Then how do you know they existed?””

Sofia pulled out her phone.

“I have proof.””

She opened a video.

The ballroom watched as she pressed play.

The recording showed Isabella sitting in a hospital room.

Emma was a newborn in her arms.

Isabella looked exhausted.

Terrified.

Then a voice came through the phone speaker.

A man’s voice.

“You have one choice.””

Everyone froze.

The voice continued.

“Disappear, or your daughter disappears.””

Marcello’s face changed.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel whispered:

“That’s why she lied.””

Sofia nodded.

“She thought she was protecting Emma.””

Marcello looked at Isabella.

“Then why involve me?””

Isabella finally spoke.

Her voice was broken.

“Because I needed protection.””

Marcello stared.

“You needed protection from who?””

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She cried.

“I knew someone powerful was watching.””

My father suddenly looked uncomfortable.

Daniel noticed.

“So did you.””

Everyone turned.

My father shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You knew there was a threat.””

“I knew there were risks.””

“You knew someone was pressuring her.””

My father looked away.

Marcello noticed.

“Dad?””

The silence was enough.

Again.

Another secret.

Another person who knew more than they admitted.

My brother looked exhausted.

“How many people knew?””

Nobody answered.

Then Emma spoke.

“Mommy?””

Everyone turned.

The little girl looked at Isabella.

“Is he the daddy you told me about?””

The question shattered the room.

Isabella covered her mouth.

Marcello looked like he had forgotten how to stand.

Sofia knelt beside Emma.

“Emma…”

But the little girl continued.

“You said he was nice.””

Marcello looked at her.

“You knew about me?””

Emma nodded.

“Mommy had a picture.””

She pointed at Isabella.

“She cried when she looked at it.””

Isabella began crying.

Real crying.

The kind that came from years of carrying something too heavy.

Marcello slowly approached Emma.

He stopped a few feet away.

Like he was afraid of frightening her.

“Hi.””

Emma looked up.

“Hi.””

“I’m Marcello.””

“I know.””

A small smile appeared on his face.

“Do you?””

She nodded.

“Mommy said your name when she was sad.””

The sentence broke him.

He knelt down.

“Emma.””

The little girl looked at him.

“I’m sorry you had to wait so long to meet me.””

She tilted her head.

“Were you looking for me?””

Marcello nodded.

“For a long time.””

“Why?””

Because you’re my daughter.

The words almost came out.

But he stopped.

Because he knew she was still a child.

He couldn’t force three years of truth onto her in one moment.

So instead he said:

“Because some people are impossible to forget.””

Emma smiled.

A tiny smile.

But it was enough.

Then a sharp sound interrupted them.

A phone ringing.

Everyone looked.

This time, it was Sofia’s phone.

She answered.

“Hello?””

Her face changed immediately.

“What?””

She listened.

Then slowly looked at Isabella.

“No.””

Marcello stood.

“What happened?””

Sofia lowered the phone.

“They found him.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who?””

Sofia looked terrified.

“The person who threatened Isabella.””

My father stepped forward.

“Who is he?””

Sofia looked at the front doors.

Then whispered:

“He’s here.””

Everyone turned.

The ballroom doors slowly opened.

A man entered.

Older.

Calm.

Confident.

Someone who walked like he owned the room.

And the moment my father saw him…

His face turned white.

Because he knew him.

My father whispered one name.

A name nobody expected.

“Adrian.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Who is Adrian?””

My father didn’t answer.

Because the man smiled.

May you like

And said:

“Enzo, you really thought you could bury what happened three years ago?””
