Chapter 8: The Battle for My Sons

I arrived at the school in less than fifteen minutes.

I don’t remember the drive.

I only remember one thought.

My children.

When I entered the office, I saw Vivian sitting calmly.

Ethan and Caleb were beside the principal.

Neither boy looked at her.

Vivian stood.

“Daniel.””

I stared at her.

“What are you doing here?””

She smiled.

“I’m their mother.””

The principal looked uncomfortable.

“She provided identification.””

“I know.””

I looked at Vivian.

“But there’s a custody arrangement.””

“Temporary.””

She stepped closer.

“And you know that.””

My attorney had warned me.

Until a court order was finalized, Vivian still had parental rights.

She knew that.

She was using it.

“You scared them.””

Her expression changed.

“I am their mother.””

“You don’t get to say that like it excuses everything.””

The principal stepped between us.

“Mr. Hale, perhaps we should have this discussion outside.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Are you okay?””

He nodded.

But his eyes said no.

Outside, my attorney arrived.

The situation became a legal argument.

Words.

Documents.

Technicalities.

All the things adults use while children sit nearby wondering if their lives are falling apart.

Finally, Vivian spoke.

“I want my children back.””

Everyone became quiet.

I looked at her.

“You mean you want control back.””

Her face hardened.

“You never understood me.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I understood you too late.””

That evening, the court granted temporary protection for the boys.

But Vivian wasn’t finished.

She filed a lawsuit.

Claiming I had manipulated the children.

Claiming I had turned them against her.

Claiming I was unstable.

Exactly what Thomas warned me about.

The battle began.

But this time, I was ready.

Marcus uncovered everything.

The fake evidence.

The financial planning.

The documents.

The messages.

Then he found the one thing we needed.

A recording.

From Vivian herself.

It was from the night she arrested Maya.

A hidden security camera captured her talking to someone on the phone.

I listened.

And felt my blood run cold.

“I don’t care if she cries.””

Vivian’s voice.

Cold.

Emotionless.

“She knows too much.””

The other person spoke.

Unknown.

Then Vivian answered:

“Once Maya is gone, Daniel will believe whatever I tell him.””

I closed my eyes.

She had never planned to convince me.

She planned to control me.

But there was more.

A second recording.

Three days later.

Vivian talking to a lawyer.

“Daniel’s reputation is everything.””

Her voice was calm.

“If he looks unstable, I win.””

The lawyer asked:

“And the children?””

Vivian answered:

“They’ll adjust.””

I stopped the recording.

I couldn’t hear more.

Not because I was angry.

Because I was afraid.

Afraid that those two words showed exactly who she was.

The night before the hearing, Ethan came into my room.

“Daddy?””

I sat up.

“What’s wrong?””

He held something.

A small notebook.

“What is that?””

He handed it to me.

“Mommy’s.””

I opened it.

Inside were pages.

Notes.

Plans.

Dates.

Names.

My name.

The boys’ names.

Maya’s name.

Then one sentence made me freeze.

*Final step: make Daniel choose between his reputation and his children.*

I turned the page.

There was a date.

Tomorrow.

The court hearing.

And underneath it:

*Bring the boys. They will break him.*

I closed the notebook.

My hands shook.

Because I finally understood.

The courtroom wasn’t where Vivian planned to win.

The courtroom was where she planned to destroy me.
