Chapter 3: The Woman I Married
I didn’t sleep that night.
I lay beside Vivian while she breathed peacefully, completely unaware that the foundation of our marriage was cracking beneath us.
Or maybe she was aware.
Maybe she was waiting.
The next morning, I watched her at breakfast.
She sat across from me drinking coffee.
Perfect posture.
Perfect expression.
Perfect control.
Eight years ago, that confidence was one of the things I loved about her.
Now it frightened me.
“Daddy?””
Caleb’s voice pulled me back.
He was holding a piece of toast.
“Can Maya come home today?””
I looked at him.
“I don’t know yet.””
Vivian immediately answered.
“She won’t.””
Caleb froze.
“Why?””
Vivian looked at him calmly.
“Because people who hurt families have consequences.””
Ethan dropped his spoon.
The sound echoed through the room.
Vivian looked at him.
“What?””
He shook his head.
“Nothing.””
I noticed his hands.
They were trembling.
After breakfast, I followed Ethan upstairs.
“Buddy.””
He stopped.
I knelt down.
“You can tell me anything.””
He looked at me.
“But Mommy said—”
He stopped.
My heart sank.
“What did Mommy say?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“She said grown-ups don’t believe kids.””
I felt anger rise inside me.
Not because he was scared.
Because someone had taught him to be.
“Ethan, listen to me.””
I held his shoulders gently.
“I believe you.””
He stared at me.
“Even if Mommy gets mad?””
“Yes.””
He looked toward Vivian’s office door.
Then he whispered:
“She did other things too.””
My stomach tightened.
“What things?””
Before he could answer, Vivian’s voice came from behind me.
“Daniel?””
I turned.
She stood at the end of the hallway.
Again, calm.
Again, smiling.
“Can I talk to you?””
Ethan immediately became silent.
That was enough.
I knew.
Whatever was happening, my son had been carrying it alone.
In my office, Vivian closed the door.
“You’re making the children anxious.””
I stared at her.
“Am I?””
“Yes.””
“Or are they anxious because they’re scared of you?””
Her expression changed.
Only for a moment.
Then she laughed.
“That’s ridiculous.””
“Is it?””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“You’re letting guilt cloud your judgment because you feel bad about Maya.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m questioning things because they don’t add up.””
She stared at me.
“Careful, Daniel.””
The words were quiet.
But they felt like a threat.
“Careful with what?””
“With destroying your own family.””
I looked at her.
And I realized something.
Vivian wasn’t defending our family.
She was protecting herself.
That afternoon, Marcus came to my house.
He brought documents.
“This is bigger than the jewelry.””
We sat in my office.
“What did you find?””
He opened a folder.
“Your wife has been moving money.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Small amounts. Different accounts. Different companies.””
“How much?””
“Almost two million dollars.””
I stared at the papers.
“Why?””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“I think she was preparing.””
“For what?””
He didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
A cold silence filled the room.
Divorce.
A battle.
Something planned.
That night, I searched through old files.
I wasn’t looking for proof that Vivian was guilty.
I was hoping to find something that explained everything.
Instead, I found a hidden folder on our shared computer.
The folder was protected.
The password was easy.
Vivian’s birthday.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Emails.
Photos.
Notes.
One file caught my attention.
“Timeline.””
I opened it.
My blood ran cold.
The document was about me.
My habits.
My schedule.
My weaknesses.
And then I saw a section titled:
“Children.””
I clicked.
The first sentence destroyed me.
“Ethan is emotionally attached to outside caregivers. Caleb is easier to influence.””
I stopped breathing.
My wife had been studying our children.
Not loving them.
Studying them.
Then I saw the final line.
“Remove Maya before Daniel becomes suspicious.””
I closed my eyes.
The truth was no longer hiding.
It was standing in front of me.
My phone rang.
Maya.
I answered.
“Mr. Hale?””
Her voice sounded frightened.
“What happened?””
“There’s something I forgot to tell you.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“The day before I was arrested, I saw Mrs. Hale hiding something in Ethan’s room.””
My heart stopped.
“What was she hiding?””
May you like
Maya’s voice dropped.
“I think it was the jewelry.””
