Chapter 4: The Evidence She Left Behind
I went upstairs before sunrise.
I didn’t wake Vivian.
I didn’t ask permission.
I walked into Ethan’s room.
The room looked exactly the same.
Toy cars on the floor.
Books stacked beside his bed.
A stuffed dinosaur sitting against the pillow.
A normal child’s room.
Except now I knew someone had turned it into a crime scene.
I searched carefully.
Not like a father.
Like someone looking for the truth.
Under Ethan’s bed, I found nothing.
Inside his closet, nothing.
Then I noticed his toy chest.
One corner was slightly open.
Inside was a small wooden box.
My hands shook.
Because I recognized it.
It belonged to Vivian.
I opened it.
Inside was a necklace.
An antique necklace.
The same necklace she claimed Maya stole.
I felt sick.
Not because I found evidence.
Because I found it in my son’s room.
I heard footsteps.
I turned.
Ethan stood in the doorway.
His face went pale.
“Daddy…”
I walked toward him slowly.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Tears filled his eyes.
“Because Mommy told me you would be angry.””
“Angry at who?””
“Me.””
My heart broke.
“Ethan, I would never be angry at you.””
He looked down.
“She put it there.””
I knelt.
“Tell me everything.””
He wiped his face.
“Mommy came into my room at night.””
“When?””
“The night before Maya got taken.””
“What did she do?””
“She put the box there.””
I closed my eyes.
“Did she see you?””
He nodded.
“She told me if I told anyone, she would make Daddy leave.””
I held him.
For a moment, I couldn’t be the businessman.
The husband.
The investigator.
I was just a father holding a scared child.
Later that morning, I confronted Vivian.
She was in the garden.
Reading a book.
Like nothing happened.
I placed the necklace on the table.
She looked at it.
Then looked at me.
No surprise.
No fear.
Just silence.
“You planted it.””
She closed the book.
“Be careful with accusations.””
“Our son saw you.””
That changed something.
Her expression hardened.
“Ethan talks too much.””
The moment she said it, I knew.
A mother wouldn’t say that.
Not like that.
“You’re blaming him?””
“I’m saying children misunderstand things.””
“You threatened him.””
She stood.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“I know enough.””
For the first time, Vivian looked angry.
Not hurt.
Not scared.
Angry.
“You think you know everything because you run hospitals?””
Her voice sharpened.
“You walk around fixing everyone else’s problems, but you never noticed what was happening inside your own house.””
The sentence hit me because there was truth inside the cruelty.
I had been absent.
Too many meetings.
Too many flights.
Too many nights answering emails instead of listening.
Vivian saw my silence.
She stepped closer.
“You abandoned this family long before I did anything.””
I stared at her.
“Did you just admit it?””
She froze.
Only for a second.
But enough.
I recorded everything from that moment forward.
That evening, Marcus called.
“Daniel, I found something else.””
“What?””
“Your wife contacted a custody attorney two months ago.””
I sat down.
“She was planning to take the children?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
A pause.
“Because she created evidence that you were unstable.””
I felt my hands go cold.
“What?””
“She documented arguments. Private conversations. She even contacted people who work for you.””
“For what?””
“To build a case that you’re obsessed with work and emotionally unavailable.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“She was going to use my absence against me.””
“Yes.””
I looked toward the stairs.
Where my sons were sleeping.
“She was going to take them.””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Daniel, there’s more.””
“What?””
“The nanny arrest wasn’t random.””
“What do you mean?””
“She needed Maya gone because Maya was the only adult in that house who knew what was happening.””
I stared into the darkness.
Then my phone received a message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
“Your wife knows you found the necklace.””
My blood ran cold.
May you like
A second message appeared.
“She’s coming for the children tonight.””
