Chapter 9: The Truth Ethan Was Never Supposed to Find
For a few seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
Sophia sat across from me, watching my face carefully.
She wasn’t surprised.
She wasn’t confused.
She was waiting for me to react.
And that was when I understood.
She wasn’t guessing.
She knew.
The message from Ethan wasn’t supposed to scare me.
It was supposed to scare her.
But somehow, she already knew.
I slowly placed my phone on the table.
“How did you know Ethan messaged me?””
Sophia smiled faintly.
“You’re still asking the wrong questions.””
I stared at her.
“Then what’s the right question?””
She leaned back.
“The right question is how much control I still have.””
A chill went through me.
Not because she sounded powerful.
Because she sounded certain.
Like someone who had already planned what would happen next.
“You don’t have control anymore,” I said.
Her expression hardened.
“That’s where you’re wrong.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You lost control when the camera showed the truth.””
She looked away for half a second.
A tiny reaction.
But I noticed.
“You think that video saved you?””
“Yes.””
She laughed softly.
“That video only changed the timing.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What does that mean?””
She looked directly at me.
“It means you still don’t understand.””
I remained silent.
She continued.
“You think the plan was to make Ethan hate you?””
I frowned.
“Wasn’t it?””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate.
“That was never the goal.””
I stared at her.
“Then what was?””
Sophia tapped the document between us.
“The goal was to make you afraid.””
I felt a strange coldness spread through me.
“Afraid enough to give up.””
She smiled.
“Exactly.””
I looked at the paper.
A transfer agreement.
A legal document.
A way to hand over control.
“You thought I would sign this because of Ethan.””
“Not just Ethan.””
She leaned forward.
“You love your family more than you love yourself.””
That sentence hurt.
Because it was true.
And she knew it.
“You knew I would do anything to protect him.””
“Yes.””
Her voice became softer.
“That’s why you were perfect.””
I stared at her.
There it was.
Not regret.
Not guilt.
Admiration.
She was proud of how well she had understood me.
“You don’t see people,” I said quietly.
Her eyebrow lifted.
“What?””
“You see weaknesses.””
For the first time, she looked offended.
“That’s not fair.””
I almost laughed.
“Fair?””
I leaned closer.
“You accused an injured old man of attacking you.””
Her face tightened.
“You destroyed my relationship with my son.””
“You took money from me.””
“You studied my life like I was a target.””
I paused.
“And you’re worried about fairness?””
She looked away.
Then her expression changed.
The softness disappeared.
The performance ended.
“Fine.””
She folded the document.
“Then let’s stop pretending.””
“Pretending what?””
“That you’re innocent.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
She smiled.
“You think I don’t know about the conversations you had with Ethan?””
“I don’t understand.””
“You always made him feel responsible.””
My chest tightened.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Her voice rose.
“You told him he was all you had.””
“I never said that.””
“You didn’t have to.””
She pointed at me.
“You were always there.””
I stared at her.
Because that was the thing she never understood.
Being loved was not manipulation.
Needing family was not a crime.
But Sophia had turned every human connection into a transaction.
Every kindness had a hidden motive.
Every relationship had a price.
My phone buzzed again.
This time I didn’t look.
Sophia noticed.
“You should answer.””
“Why?””
“Because you’re curious.””
I stayed silent.
She smiled.
“You want to know what Ethan found.””
I reached for the phone.
Before I could unlock it, Sophia spoke.
“He found Daniel.””
My hand stopped.
“How do you know?””
Her smile faded.
Because for the first time, she looked uncertain.
Only for a moment.
But enough.
“I know because Daniel tells me everything.””
The answer came too quickly.
Almost automatically.
I looked at her.
“You said you weren’t working with him.””
She froze.
A mistake.
A small one.
But she made it.
“You just admitted it.””
Sophia’s face changed.
She realized what she had done.
Then she laughed.
A quiet laugh.
“You’re smarter than I thought.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m just finally listening.””
She stood.
The conversation was over.
“I think you should leave.””
I looked at her.
“This is a public café.””
“You know what I mean.””
She picked up her purse.
“You have no idea what’s coming.””
I remained seated.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
She looked down at me.
“You think Ethan finding Daniel changes anything?””
“It changes everything.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“It only changes what you know.””
Then she walked away.
But before she reached the door, she stopped.
She turned around.
“One more thing, Robert.””
I looked at her.
“The money you gave me?””
“Yes?””
She smiled.
“You were never the only person who thought they were helping.””
Then she left.
I sat there for a moment.
Trying to understand.
Then my phone rang.
Ethan.
I answered immediately.
“What happened?””
His voice was tense.
“We found Daniel.””
“Where?””
“He was at a storage facility.””
I straightened.
“And?””
“He had files.””
“What kind of files?””
A pause.
Then:
“Dad, he had files about you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of files?””
“Everything.””
Ethan’s voice shook.
“Your medical records.””
“My financial information.””
“Copies of your house documents.””
I closed my eyes.
“How?””
“We’re trying to figure that out.””
“Where is Sophia?””
Silence.
That silence told me something was wrong.
“Ethan?””
“She’s gone.””
My heart sank.
“What do you mean?””
“She left before we got here.””
“Where?””
“We don’t know.””
A pause.
Then Ethan said:
“But Dad…”
“Yes?””
“There was something else.””
I waited.
“She had another file.””
“What file?””
His voice became quieter.
“One with my name on it.””
The world seemed to stop.
“Your name?””
“Yes.””
“What was inside?””
Another pause.
“Dad…”
“Tell me.””
“She wasn’t just planning to take your inheritance.””
I gripped the phone.
“What then?””
“She was planning to make me believe I was the one who wanted it.””
I felt a cold wave move through me.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan breathed heavily.
“There were documents.””
“What documents?””
“Fake ones.””
“About what?””
His voice cracked.
“About you.””
I stood slowly.
“Ethan.””
“She created evidence that you were mentally declining.””
I couldn’t speak.
“She planned to convince everyone you weren’t capable of managing your own money.””
The café noise disappeared.
The voices.
The dishes.
The footsteps.
Everything.
“How long?””
“What?””
“How long has she been planning this?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
And that scared me.
“Ethan.””
Finally, he whispered:
“Dad…”
“Yes?””
“The first document she created was dated six months before your surgery.””
My blood ran cold.
Six months.
Before I fell.
Before I needed help.
Before I moved in.
Before anyone knew I would become vulnerable.
Sophia hadn’t reacted to an opportunity.
She had created one.
I sat back down.
Because my legs suddenly felt weak.
Ethan continued.
“There’s one more thing.””
“What?””
“She didn’t just work with Daniel.””
I waited.
“She had someone inside the legal office.””
My heart stopped.
“The office that handles your estate.””
I looked at the empty chair across from me.
The chair where Sophia had been sitting.
The chair where she smiled and told me she knew everything.
“Who?””
Ethan’s voice lowered.
“It was someone we know.””
“Who?””
A long silence.
Then he said the name.
And the moment I heard it…
Everything finally made sense.
Because the person helping Sophia was not a stranger.
Not a criminal hiding in the shadows.
It was someone who had been standing beside me the entire time.
Someone I trusted.
May you like
Someone I never suspected.
My own attorney.
