Chapter 7: The Inheritance Trap

The words on the screen refused to disappear.

“Once Robert is removed from the household, the inheritance transfer can begin.””

I read them again.

And again.

Not because I didn’t understand.

Because I wanted to believe I didn’t.

My entire life, I had worked for one simple purpose.

To build something my family could depend on.

A home.

A savings account.

A future.

I never imagined that the things I created out of love could become the reason someone targeted me.

Ethan stood beside me, staring at the document.

His face had lost all color.

“She wanted your inheritance?””

Karen nodded slowly.

“That appears to be the goal.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was barely audible.

“No, she wouldn’t.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone in that room understood something he wasn’t ready to accept.

Sometimes the hardest person to convince is the person who loved someone the most.

“She’s my wife,” Ethan said.

Karen looked at him.

“I know.””

“She loves me.””

Karen didn’t argue.

She didn’t need to.

Instead, she pointed at the screen.

“Love doesn’t usually require a timeline, financial notes, and a strategy document.””

Ethan looked away.

I watched my son fight a battle inside himself.

The part of him that loved Sophia.

The part of him that now knew what she had done.

The part of him that remembered every moment he defended her.

Every time he told me I misunderstood.

Every time he chose her version of the truth.

I knew that pain.

Because I had spent years learning that people can disappoint you without becoming strangers.

They can hurt you and still be people you love.

That was the hardest kind of hurt.

Not hatred.

Disappointment.

“What does ‘inheritance transfer’ mean?”” I asked.

Karen looked at me.

“That’s what we need to find out.””

Ethan turned.

“What do you mean?””

“The document doesn’t explain the exact method.””

She scrolled through the file.

“But it mentions your estate plan several times.””

My stomach tightened.

“My will.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the papers from earlier.

The will Sophia had found.

The one where her name appeared.

“She knew about it.””

Karen nodded.

“Probably.””

“But how?””

No one answered.

Then Ethan slowly looked down.

And I saw something cross his face.

A memory.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“She asked me something a few months ago.””

“What?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“She asked whether my father had updated his will.””

The room went silent.

“When?””

“Before you moved in.””

My heart sank.

“And what did you say?””

“I told her I didn’t know.””

Karen looked at him.

“Did she ask why?””

Ethan nodded.

“She said she was just curious.””

I closed my eyes.

Curious.

Another harmless word.

Another innocent question.

Another piece of the puzzle.

Sophia had spent months collecting information.

Not because she cared.

Because she was preparing.

Karen leaned closer to the laptop.

“There’s more.””

She clicked another file.

A spreadsheet appeared.

My name was at the top.

Below it were numbers.

Assets.

Property value.

Retirement accounts.

Investments.

Even the estimated value of my house.

I felt sick.

“She made a financial profile of you,” Karen said.

Ethan whispered:

“She was studying him.””

“Yes.””

The word hung there.

Studying.

Not knowing.

Not caring.

Studying.

I thought about every dinner conversation.

Every question.

Every smile.

I wondered how many times I had mistaken investigation for interest.

“How did she get this information?”” Ethan asked.

Karen looked at the document.

“Some of it could have come from conversations.””

“And the rest?””

She didn’t answer.

But I knew.

There was only one place some of those details could have come from.

My home.

My private papers.

My files.

I looked at Ethan.

“Did Sophia ever have access to my office?””

His face changed.

A small movement.

But I noticed.

“What?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Dad…”

“Ethan.””

He swallowed.

“She helped organize some of your things when you moved in.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

“The first week.””

I stared at him.

“You told her to?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

“She said she was trying to help.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn’t know what else to do.

She had entered my home.

Moved my belongings.

Looked through my life.

And I thanked her.

I thanked her for helping me.

Ethan looked devastated.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“Stop saying that.””

He froze.

“I mean it.””

My voice softened.

“I know you’re sorry.””

He lowered his eyes.

“But being sorry doesn’t change what happened.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“And it doesn’t mean you have to punish yourself forever.””

A tear rolled down his cheek.

“I hurt you.””

“Yes.””

He closed his eyes.

“I hurt you because I believed someone else.””

I looked at him.

“Then make sure you never stop asking questions again.””

He nodded.

“I won’t.””

The next step was obvious.

We needed to find Sophia.

Not to fight.

Not to punish her.

To understand how far this went.

But before we could leave, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

Everyone went quiet.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“Mr. Miller?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Daniel.””

My entire body went still.

Karen immediately stood.

Ethan looked at me.

Daniel.

The man in the photograph.

The man connected to Sophia.

“How did you get my number?”” I asked.

A small laugh came through the phone.

“You’d be surprised how easy information is to find.””

My grip tightened.

“What do you want?””

“I want to explain.””

“Explain what?””

A pause.

Then:

“What Sophia did.””

I looked at Ethan.

He mouthed:

“Put it on speaker.””

I did.

Daniel continued.

“Your son probably thinks my sister is responsible for everything.””

Karen’s eyes narrowed.

“Your sister?””

Daniel laughed softly.

“She told you about me?””

Nobody responded.

“You should know something, Robert.””

My name coming from his mouth felt wrong.

Too familiar.

“I never wanted things to go this far.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“Where is Sophia?””

Daniel ignored him.

“She made mistakes.””

I felt anger rise.

“Did she?””

“Yes.””

“And what about the plan?””

Silence.

A long one.

Then Daniel said:

“So you found that.””

Karen looked shocked.

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“You knew?””

Another laugh.

“Of course I knew.””

The line went quiet again.

Then Daniel said:

“You need to understand something. Sophia was never the person in control.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you’ve been looking at the wrong person.””

Ethan grabbed the phone.

“Where is my wife?””

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“She’s trying to fix the problem.””

“What problem?””

“The fact that the camera exposed her.””

A chill ran through me.

“What is she planning?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“You have forty-eight hours.””

“For what?””

“For Robert to sign the new documents.””

My blood ran cold.

“What documents?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“The ones that transfer control of his estate.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Ethan said:

“You’re threatening my father.””

“No.””

Daniel paused.

“I’m warning you.””

The call started to end.

I shouted:

“Wait!””

The line stayed open for one final second.

“Why are you telling me this?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Because Sophia thinks she can replace me.””

Then the call ended.

Nobody moved.

Karen looked terrified.

Ethan stared at the phone.

And I realized something worse than the truth we had already discovered.

Sophia wasn’t running away.

She wasn’t hiding.

She was coming back.

May you like

And this time…

She wasn’t pretending to be the victim.
