Chapter 6: The Man Behind Sophia’s Plan

The photograph sat between us like a loaded weapon.

I kept looking at it, hoping my eyes were wrong.

But they weren’t.

The man standing beside Sophia was real.

His arm was around her shoulder.

Her smile was real.

Not the careful smile she used around Ethan.

Not the polite smile she wore when pretending everything was fine.

This smile was different.

Relaxed.

Confident.

A smile from someone who knew exactly what she was doing.

Ethan stared at the picture.

“Who is he?””

Karen looked at him.

“His name is Daniel Whitmore.””

Ethan’s face tightened.

“Whitmore?””

“Yes.””

“Is he related to you?””

Karen nodded.

“He’s my younger brother.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at her.

“You contacted me because of your brother?””

Karen folded her hands.

“I contacted you because I knew what Sophia was capable of.””

Ethan stood up.

“Wait.””

His voice was sharp.

“You’re telling me my wife has been working with your brother to take money from people?””

Karen looked down.

“I’m telling you what I know.””

“And what exactly do you know?””

She opened another folder.

“I know Daniel and Sophia have known each other for years.””

She placed several documents on the table.

“I know they were both involved in a financial investigation at my previous company.””

Ethan stared at the papers.

“I don’t understand.””

Karen looked at him.

“Because Sophia is very good at making people believe she is the victim.””

That sentence hit harder than I expected.

Because I had seen it.

I had watched her cry.

I had watched her tremble.

I had watched my son defend her.

She had never needed to force anyone.

She only needed to make them feel sorry for her.

“What did they do?”” I asked.

Karen looked at me.

“They targeted people who were emotionally vulnerable.””

My stomach tightened.

“People like me.””

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Ethan walked toward the window.

His hands went through his hair.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Then again.

“No.””

I understood that reaction.

Because accepting the truth meant admitting something painful.

Not only had he been deceived.

He had helped the person deceiving him.

He had attacked me because he believed her.

He had chosen her story before he knew mine.

“I should have seen it,” he whispered.

I looked at him.

“Ethan.””

“I should have seen it.””

“Son.””

He turned around.

“You told me.””

The room became still.

“You tried to tell me.””

His voice cracked.

“And I didn’t listen.””

I wanted to say something that would make it easier.

Something a father says to protect his child.

But sometimes protecting someone means not taking away the lesson they need to learn.

So I stayed quiet.

Ethan looked at Karen.

“What was Daniel’s role?””

Karen hesitated.

“That’s the part I don’t fully understand.””

“What do you mean?””

“I know they worked together before. I know money moved between accounts.””

She pointed at the documents.

“But after the investigation started, Daniel disappeared.””

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Where did he go?””

Karen looked uncomfortable.

“We don’t know.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“But he’s here.””

Karen nodded.

“And that’s what worried me.””

She pulled out another page.

“This was taken last month.””

Ethan grabbed it.

The picture showed Daniel entering a building.

A building I recognized.

My building.

My apartment complex.

I felt the blood leave my face.

“He was near my house.””

Karen nodded.

“Three times.””

Ethan looked at me.

“Dad…”

I shook my head.

“I never saw him.””

Karen continued.

“We believe he was watching.””

“Watching what?”” Ethan asked.

She looked at me.

“You.””

The room became colder.

I had spent weeks thinking Sophia simply disliked me.

I had convinced myself it was a family conflict.

A personality clash.

A difficult adjustment.

But now I wondered if every conversation had been calculated.

Every complaint.

Every accusation.

Every moment where she made Ethan feel guilty.

“Why me?”” I asked.

Karen was silent for a moment.

Then she answered:

“Because you were exactly the kind of person they look for.””

The words hurt.

Not because they were cruel.

Because they were true.

“You’re older,” she said.

“You live alone.””

“You have savings.””

“You trust family.””

I looked down.

The qualities I had always considered strengths suddenly sounded like weaknesses.

Kindness.

Trust.

Generosity.

People like Sophia could turn them into openings.

Ethan sat down.

“She moved my father into our house.””

Karen nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

I already knew the answer.

But I needed to hear it.

Karen looked at the papers.

“Because she needed access.””

“To what?””

“Your father’s finances.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

I remembered all those times Sophia asked casual questions.

Questions I thought were harmless.

“Do you still pay property taxes yourself?””

“Have you updated your retirement accounts?””

“Do you have someone managing your investments?””

At the time, I thought she was being practical.

Now every question felt different.

“She knew you were injured,” Karen said.

“She knew you would be dependent for a while.””

Ethan looked sick.

“She planned this.””

Karen nodded.

“Yes.””

The word was simple.

But it carried the weight of everything.

Planned.

Not an argument.

Not a mistake.

Not a bad moment.

A plan.

I thought back to the night before everything happened.

Her saying:

“We’ll see.””

I thought it was a threat.

Now I realized it was a promise.

Ethan stood suddenly.

“We need to find her.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because I need answers.””

“You might not get them.””

“I need to try.””

Karen shook her head.

“Be careful.””

Ethan looked at her.

“She’s my wife.””

“That’s exactly why.””

Her voice softened.

“People like Sophia are most dangerous when they feel control slipping away.””

I felt a chill.

“What do you mean?””

Karen looked at me.

“The accusation. The scene. The torn blouse.””

She paused.

“That wasn’t her first plan.””

Ethan froze.

“What?””

Karen opened another folder.

“I found this after reviewing the old records.””

She placed a printed email on the table.

My eyes moved across the page.

The sender was Sophia.

The recipient was Daniel.

The date was one week before the incident.

Ethan leaned over.

“What does it say?””

Karen looked at me.

“I think you should read it.””

I picked up the paper.

My hands trembled.

The message was short.

Too short.

Because every word mattered.

> “He’s weaker than expected. The injury makes him easier to manage. Ethan is already choosing my side. If the first accusation doesn’t work, we move to the next step.””

I stopped reading.

My chest tightened.

Ethan took the paper from me.

His eyes scanned the message.

Then he whispered:

“Next step?””

Nobody answered.

Because we all knew what that meant.

There had been a backup plan.

The accusation had failed.

The camera had exposed her.

The family had seen the truth.

So what was next?

Karen looked at the bottom of the email.

“There was an attachment.””

My eyes lifted.

“What attachment?””

She turned her laptop around.

A file was open on the screen.

A document.

A plan.

I stared at the title.

Because it contained my name.

“Project Miller.””

Ethan looked at it.

“What is that?””

Karen swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

She clicked the file.

The first page loaded.

And there it was.

A detailed timeline.

Dates.

Conversations.

Financial notes.

Even my daily routine.

My therapy schedule.

My doctor appointments.

The days Ethan was home.

The days he worked late.

Someone had been documenting my life.

Then Ethan saw the final line.

The line that made him step back.

Because it wasn’t about money anymore.

It wasn’t about making me leave.

It was about something much bigger.

The final sentence read:

“Once Robert is removed from the household, the inheritance transfer can begin.””

Ethan looked at me.

His face was pale.

“Dad…”

I stared at the screen.

Because suddenly I understood.

Sophia never wanted me out of the house.

She wanted me out of the way.

May you like

And according to that document…

The plan was already moving to the next stage.
