Chapter 6: The Signature From My Hospital Room

The hospital.

The moment Rebecca said those words, I remembered the smell of antiseptic, the pale green walls, and the uncomfortable chair beside my bed.

Three months earlier, I had undergone a minor surgical procedure.

Nothing life-threatening.

But the recovery had been difficult, and I had spent two nights at Greenwich Hospital.

Daniel had visited both evenings.

He had brought flowers, a box of chocolates, and a stack of paperwork.

"Just routine estate documents, Mom," he had said.

I remembered asking whether anything required immediate attention.

"Nothing serious. Rebecca already reviewed everything.""

I had been tired.

My glasses were on the bedside table, and I had been struggling to read the small print.

Daniel had placed the papers on my blanket.

"Just sign here and here.""

I had trusted him.

Because he was my son.

Now Rebecca was telling me that someone had copied my signature from those hospital documents.

"Which document?"" I asked.

She opened the bank application again.

"The signature appears to match the authorization page of a medical consent and administrative packet you signed during your hospital stay.""

I stared at her.

"Why would anyone have that?""

"That's what we need to establish.""

Daniel looked horrified.

"Mom, I didn't take anything from the hospital.""

Rebecca turned toward him.

"Did you handle your mother's paperwork during her admission?""

He nodded slowly.

"I helped with the forms.""

"Did you keep copies?""

"No.""

"Did you photograph any documents?""

"I don't remember.""

Rebecca studied him.

"That is not an answer.""

Daniel rubbed his face.

"I might have taken pictures of the paperwork because Mom couldn't read some of it properly.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why?""

"So I could check the details later.""

"With whom?""

He didn't answer.

I looked at him.

"Daniel.""

He finally whispered.

"Victor.""

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Claire stepped toward him.

"You sent your mother's hospital documents to Victor?""

"I didn't send them for this.""

"What did you send them for?""

"He wanted to verify the signature format for some property paperwork.""

Rebecca's expression hardened.

"Mr. Hale, did you send him a photograph of your mother's signature?""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

I felt as though someone had struck me.

"Daniel, you gave a stranger my signature?""

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

"I didn't know he was going to use it like this.""

"Why did he need it?""

"He said the bank needed a sample to verify the trust documents.""

Rebecca closed her eyes briefly.

"That is not a legitimate reason to provide an image of a person's signature for a transaction they have not authorized.""

Daniel lowered his head.

"I know.""

"No," I said quietly.

"You didn't know. That's the problem.""

Lorraine suddenly interrupted.

"This is all being twisted. Daniel was trying to help.""

I turned toward her.

"Did you know about the hospital documents?""

She didn't answer.

"Mrs. Whitmore?""

Lorraine looked at Rebecca.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

Victor laughed under his breath.

"She knew.""

Lorraine spun around.

"Don't you dare.""

Victor lifted both hands.

"I'm not taking the blame for everything.""

Rebecca stepped closer.

"Mr. Lang, explain.""

Victor looked uncomfortable.

"Daniel sent me the signature sample. Lorraine asked whether it could be used on the documents.""

Claire stared at her mother.

"You knew?""

Lorraine's face flushed.

"I was told the authorization was legitimate.""

"By whom?""

"Victor.""

Victor shook his head.

"That's not what you said.""

Lorraine's voice rose.

"You're lying!""

Rebecca raised a hand.

"Enough. Every statement made here will need to be documented. We are not conducting a trial in this garden.""

She took out her phone and made another call.

I sat down on the stone bench.

My legs felt weak.

For sixty-eight years, I had believed trust was something you built slowly.

You gave it to people who earned it.

You protected it.

You expected your family to honor it.

But I had given mine away too easily.

Not because Daniel had earned every bit of it.

Because I had loved him enough to overlook the warning signs.

I remembered the times he had asked for money.

The business loans I had helped him repay.

The expensive vacations I had quietly paid for.

The renovations he had requested.

The new cars.

The private school tuition for Ethan.

I had never kept score.

Now I wondered whether my generosity had taught him that there would always be another account, another signature, another solution waiting for him.

Claire sat beside me.

"Margaret, I'm so sorry.""

I looked at her.

"Did you know Daniel sent the hospital documents?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

"Did you know he was working with Victor?""

"I knew they had discussed a property investment. Daniel said it was a way to secure the house for Ethan's future.""

I studied her face.

"Did you ever sign a power of attorney?""

"No. Never.""

"Did your mother ask you to sign anything?""

Claire hesitated.

"She asked me to sign some papers about the birthday party.""

"What papers?""

"Something about the event insurance and the catering arrangements. She said it was just administrative.""

Rebecca, who had returned from her call, immediately looked up.

"When was this?""

"About two weeks ago.""

"Did you read the documents?""

Claire shook her head.

"My mother said she had already filled them out.""

Rebecca's voice became serious.

"Where did you sign them?""

"In the kitchen.""

"Did you sign more than one page?""

"I think so.""

"Do you remember the date?""

Claire looked toward Lorraine.

"October 17.""

Rebecca made a note.

"Do you have a copy?""

"No.""

Lorraine folded her arms.

"Those were legitimate documents.""

Rebecca turned toward her.

"Then providing copies should be straightforward.""

Lorraine said nothing.

I looked at Claire.

"Sweetheart, if your signature has been used without your knowledge, we need to find out exactly what you signed.""

Claire nodded.

"I'll help.""

For the first time that morning, I believed she was genuinely frightened.

Not merely because she had been caught.

Because she was beginning to understand that her own mother might have used her.

Thomas approached from the main house.

"Mrs. Hale?""

I turned.

"Yes?""

"The security company has just sent the archived access report.""

Rebecca took the printed pages from him.

"Thank you.""

She read the first page.

Then the second.

Then she stopped.

"Margaret, we have a problem.""

I stood.

"What is it?""

"The study access code was used on October 28.""

"That's the day the transfer application was submitted.""

"Yes.""

"Who entered?""

Rebecca turned the page.

"The system recorded the code assigned to Mrs. Whitmore.""

Lorraine immediately shook her head.

"I wasn't here that day.""

Thomas cleared his throat.

"Actually, Mrs. Whitmore, the front gate camera recorded your car entering at 9:14 a.m.""

Lorraine glared at him.

"That camera was supposed to be disconnected.""

Thomas looked at her.

"It was.""

He pointed to another section of the report.

"But the gate camera was operating on a separate system.""

Rebecca continued reading.

"The study code was used at 9:32 a.m. The door remained open for approximately eleven minutes.""

I looked at Lorraine.

"What did you take from my study?""

"Nothing.""

"Then why were you inside?""

"I was looking for something.""

"What?""

She pressed her lips together.

Rebecca asked, "Were you looking for the original deed?""

Lorraine didn't answer.

Daniel stared at her.

"Why would you need the original deed?""

Lorraine turned toward him.

"Because Victor said the bank would need to inspect it.""

"Then why didn't you ask Mom?""

"Because she would have refused!""

The words burst out of her before she could stop them.

Everyone went still.

Lorraine's mouth tightened.

She looked furious with herself.

I took one step forward.

"So you knew I hadn't authorized the transaction.""

She said nothing.

"You knew I would refuse.""

Still nothing.

"And you entered my study without permission.""

Lorraine lifted her chin.

"I was trying to prevent your stubbornness from ruining your family's future.""

I looked at her.

"Your family?""

"Yes!""

She gestured toward the mansion.

"Look at this place! Seven acres. Twenty-two rooms.

A swimming pool. A guesthouse. All of it sitting here while you live like a queen and your daughter and grandson depend on you.""

Claire stepped forward.

"We don't depend on her!""

Lorraine turned sharply.

"Don't be naive.""

"She gave us a home!""

"She gave you a place to live while reminding you every day that she owned it.""

I shook my head.

"I never reminded you of anything.""

"You didn't have to. Every room in this house was chosen by you. Every employee answers to you.

Every bill comes from your accounts. We couldn't even replace a sofa without asking permission.""

I stared at her.

"You could have bought your own sofa.""

Her face reddened.

Claire looked at her mother in disbelief.

"You wanted the house because you were angry that Mom controlled it?""

Lorraine's eyes filled with tears.

"I wanted to make sure you had something of your own.""

"By stealing someone else's?""

"Don't use that word!""

"Then what should I call it?""

Lorraine looked away.

Rebecca stepped between them.

"Mrs. Whitmore, I strongly recommend that you stop making statements about the transaction. The relevant records will be preserved and reviewed by the authorities.""

Lorraine suddenly turned toward Daniel.

"Tell them the truth.""

Daniel looked confused.

"What truth?""

"Tell them you wanted this.""

He stared at her.

"I wanted to keep the house.""

"Exactly.""

"Not steal it!""

Lorraine pointed toward me.

"Your mother was never going to give it to you.""

Daniel looked at me.

I felt my throat tighten.

"Daniel, is that what you thought?""

He hesitated.

"I thought it would eventually be mine.""

"Why?""

"Because I'm your only child.""

I looked at him for a long moment.

"Being my only child does not make you the owner of everything I possess.""

He lowered his eyes.

"I know.""

"Do you?""

He didn't answer.

Rebecca's phone rang.

She stepped away and listened.

Then she returned with an expression I couldn't read.

"The police have received the initial report. An officer is being sent to the estate to take statements and advise on preserving evidence.""

Lorraine immediately became agitated.

"Police? You're calling the police over a family misunderstanding?""

Rebecca looked at her.

"Forged property documents and a suspected fraudulent loan application are not family misunderstandings.""

Lorraine reached for her handbag.

"I won't stay here for this.""

"Nobody is asking you to.""

She turned toward the main house.

But as she passed Daniel, he caught her arm.

"Wait.""

She pulled away.

"Don't touch me.""

"Tell me something.""

"What?""

"Did you ever intend to give Claire and me the house?""

Lorraine looked at him.

For the first time, her expression softened.

"Of course.""

"Then why put it in your company?""

She hesitated.

"Because the property needed to be protected.""

"From whom?""

"From your mother.""

Daniel stared at her.

"She bought it for us.""

"And she could take it away whenever she wanted.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"It was never yours to lose.""

Lorraine ignored me.

"Daniel, you have a business to save. You have a wife and child. I was trying to make sure you weren't left with nothing.""

He looked at her.

"By using my mother's signature?""

Lorraine's silence answered him.

Claire began crying again.

"Mom, I can't believe you.""

Lorraine turned toward her daughter.

"One day you'll understand.""

"No," Claire whispered.

"I think I understand now.""

At that moment, Ethan appeared at the back door.

He was dressed in a small navy suit with a red bow tie.

His face lit up when he saw us.

"Grandma!""

I turned immediately.

"Hello, sweetheart.""

He ran toward me.

"Mom says the magician is ready, and the cake is here!""

He looked around.

"Why is everyone standing outside?""

I knelt and straightened his bow tie.

"Some grown-up things are being sorted out.""

He frowned.

"Is my birthday ruined?""

I looked at the mansion.

At the balloons.

At the beautiful cake waiting inside.

Then I looked at my grandson.

"No, sweetheart. Your birthday is not ruined.""

He smiled.

"Good. I want you to sit next to me.""

"I will.""

He hugged me.

Then he looked over my shoulder and noticed Lorraine.

"Grandma Lorraine, are you coming?""

Lorraine forced a smile.

"Of course, darling.""

Ethan nodded happily and ran back toward the house.

For a moment, the adults stood in silence.

Then Rebecca's phone vibrated.

She looked at the screen.

Her expression changed.

"Margaret.""

"What now?""

She showed me an email that had just arrived from the hospital's records department.

The message contained a scanned copy of the paperwork Daniel had helped me sign during my admission.

Rebecca enlarged the attachment.

Then she pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.

"Look at this.""

I leaned closer.

It was an authorization form.

But it wasn't the form I remembered signing.

The heading read:

*PATIENT DESIGNATED REPRESENTATIVE AND DOCUMENT ACCESS AUTHORIZATION.*

Below it was my name.

And beneath my name was another signature.

Daniel's.

Rebecca read the paragraph aloud.

"This authorization permits the designated representative to receive, copy, and transmit selected administrative documents on behalf of the patient.""

I stared at Daniel.

"What does that mean?""

Rebecca answered.

"It means your son may have had legitimate access to certain documents during your hospital admission.""

Daniel looked relieved for half a second.

"See? I told you I was helping.""

But Rebecca continued reading.

"The authorization was later amended.""

She scrolled down.

The amended version included an additional clause.

*The representative may obtain and provide certified copies of property and financial records upon request.*

My heart began pounding.

"Who amended it?""

Rebecca examined the bottom of the page.

There was a date.

October 2.

And a witness signature.

The witness was not a hospital employee.

It was someone from the family.

Rebecca slowly raised her eyes.

"Margaret, do you recognize this name?""

I looked at the screen.

Then my blood turned cold.

The witness signature belonged to my late husband's younger brother.

*Thomas Hale.*

My brother-in-law had been dead for eleven years.

Rebecca stared at the document.

"This is impossible.""

But I was no longer looking at the signature.

I was looking at the date.

October 2.

The amendment had supposedly been witnessed eleven years after Thomas's death.

And that meant the forged paperwork wasn't simply copied from an old hospital record.

Someone had deliberately altered the document to make it appear that I had granted Daniel far greater authority than I ever intended.

I turned toward my son.

"Daniel, did you know about this amendment?""

He stared at the screen.

Then he shook his head.

"No.""

Rebecca looked at him.

"Are you certain?""

He nodded.

"I've never seen that.""

Lorraine suddenly stepped forward.

"That's enough. We need to stop this.""

Rebecca turned.

"Why?""

Lorraine's face had gone completely pale.

"Because...""

She stopped.

Her eyes moved toward the main house.

Then she whispered:

"Because Thomas Hale wasn't the only dead person whose signature was used.""

And from somewhere inside the mansion, a phone began ringing.

It was coming from my study.

A phone that had been disconnected for years.

May you like

And when Thomas Reed answered it, the voice on the other end asked for me by my maiden name.

*"Is Eleanor still alive?""*
