Chapter 3: The Photograph Taken Inside My Study

Nobody moved.
Daniel held his phone in both hands, staring at the photograph.
It showed my walnut desk, the green leather chair, and the tall bookcase beside the window.
The angle was unmistakable.
The photograph had been taken from inside my study.
And on the desk, clearly visible, was the blue folder Rebecca had brought that morning.
The message beneath it contained only seven words.
*THE NEXT SIGNATURE WILL BE THE REAL ONE.*
Claire covered her mouth.
"Who would send something like that?""
Lorraine, who had been standing near the hallway, suddenly turned around.
"Give me the phone.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Why?""
"Because this is getting out of hand.""
Rebecca stepped between them.
"Nobody touches that phone except its owner.""
Lorraine lowered her hand.
"You're treating us like criminals.""
"I'm treating an apparent threat seriously.""
I looked at the photograph again.
The study door had been locked the previous night.
I was certain of it.
I had gone downstairs at 3:17 a.m., unlocked the bottom drawer, and left the folder on my desk.
But the photograph showed something else.
The desk lamp was switched on.
The curtains were partially closed.
And the blue folder was positioned precisely where I had left it.
Whoever had taken the picture had been inside the room after I left.
I turned toward the hallway.
"Rebecca, I want the security footage.""
Daniel blinked.
"Security footage?""
"Yes. The cameras.""
Lorraine let out a short laugh.
"Margaret, surely you aren't suggesting someone has been sneaking around the house.""
I looked at her.
"Why would that surprise you?""
She pressed her lips together.
Daniel rubbed his face.
"The security system hasn't been working properly for months.""
I turned to him.
"What?""
He shifted uncomfortably.
"I thought you knew.""
"No. I didn't.""
"The cameras were disconnected during the landscaping work.""
"Which cameras?""
"Most of them.""
I stared at him.
"Who authorized that?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Claire arranged it with the security company.""
Claire looked up sharply.
"Because you said the old cameras kept triggering false alarms!""
Daniel frowned.
"I said they needed updating.""
"You told me the system was unnecessary during the renovation.""
Lorraine interrupted.
"This is ridiculous. Can we please stop treating a birthday party like a criminal investigation?""
I looked at her.
"You're welcome to leave.""
Her eyes widened.
"Excuse me?""
"You heard me.""
For the first time that morning, she appeared genuinely offended.
"Margaret, this is my daughter's home.""
"No. It isn't.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Mom, please.""
I raised my hand.
"Daniel, not another word about whose home this is until you understand the documents on that table.""
Rebecca closed her briefcase.
"I'd like to speak with the security company immediately.""
Daniel nodded.
"I'll call them.""
"No," I said.
He looked at me.
"I'll call them.""
I picked up my phone and contacted the estate manager, Thomas Reed.
Thomas had worked for me for eleven years. He had supervised the renovations and knew the property better than anyone.
He answered almost immediately.
"Good morning, Mrs. Hale.""
"Thomas, I need you at the house.""
"Is everything all right?""
"No. I need to know who requested the security cameras be disconnected.""
There was a pause.
"Mrs. Hale, I thought you knew.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Knew what?""
"The instruction came from Mr. Hale and Mrs. Whitmore. They said you had approved the temporary suspension.""
I looked at Daniel.
He was watching me.
"Did they provide written authorization?""
"Yes, ma'am. An email.""
"From whom?""
"Your office.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"My office?""
"Yes. It came from your personal email address.""
Rebecca immediately moved closer.
"Thomas, this is Rebecca Sloan, Mrs. Hale's attorney. Please preserve every email, work order, and communication related to the security system. Do not delete anything.""
"Of course, Ms. Sloan.""
"Who received the instruction?""
"Let me check the records.""
We heard him typing.
Then he spoke again.
"The email was sent on September 14.""
"Who signed it?"" Rebecca asked.
"Margaret Hale.""
I closed my eyes.
Another forged signature.
Another false authorization.
"Thomas," I said, "I did not send that email.""
His voice became concerned.
"Understood, Mrs. Hale.""
"Please come to the house as soon as possible.""
"I'll be there in twenty minutes.""
I ended the call.
Rebecca looked at me.
"This is becoming more serious.""
"How serious?""
"Someone may have obtained access to your email, your personal records, and the estate's security arrangements.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That doesn't make sense.""
Rebecca turned toward him.
"Why not?""
"Because Mom's email is protected.""
"By what?""
He didn't answer.
I looked at him.
"Daniel, have you ever used my computer?""
He hesitated.
"Once or twice.""
"When?""
"During the renovations.""
"Did you access my email?""
"I might have.""
"Did you know my password?""
He looked away.
Claire stepped forward.
"Daniel, what is she asking?""
He ran a hand through his hair.
"Mom, I helped you set up the email account years ago. You asked me to.""
"That doesn't mean you were authorized to use it.""
"I wasn't doing anything wrong.""
"Then tell me exactly what you did.""
He opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
Rebecca watched him closely.
"Mr. Hale, if you have any information that might explain the documents or the unauthorized email, now would be an appropriate time to disclose it.""
Daniel looked toward Lorraine.
It was a quick glance.
But I saw it.
And so did Rebecca.
"Why are you looking at Mrs. Whitmore?"" she asked.
"I'm not.""
"You just did.""
Lorraine stepped forward.
"Daniel is being interrogated in his own home.""
I almost laughed.
"Again with that phrase.""
She turned toward me.
"You need to stop humiliating him.""
I stood.
"Humiliating him? My son woke me up at three in the morning and ordered me out of a house I purchased. And now someone has been forging my signature. If anyone should be embarrassed, it isn't me.""
Claire lowered her head.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Ethan came running into the room.
"Grandma! The magician is here!""
He stopped when he saw everyone's faces.
"Why is everybody mad?""
I immediately softened my voice.
"Nobody is mad at you, sweetheart.""
He looked at Daniel.
"Are we still having the party?""
Daniel forced a smile.
"Of course, buddy.""
Ethan held up a sheet of paper.
"I made you something.""
He handed it to me.
It was a drawing of the mansion.
The house was enormous, with blue windows, a red front door, and a yellow sun above the roof.
There were five stick figures standing in front.
Ethan pointed to them.
"That's Grandpa Robert, but he's in heaven. That's Daddy. That's Mommy. That's me.""
Then he pointed to the last figure.
"And that's you.""
I felt my eyes sting.
"You drew me?""
"Yeah. You're the grandma who lives in the big house.""
The words landed harder than he could have imagined.
The grandma who lives in the big house.
Not the woman who paid for it.
Not the trustee.
Not the person whose name was being forged.
Just Grandma.
And that was enough for him.
I kissed his forehead.
"Thank you, sweetheart. I love it.""
He smiled.
"Can you put it in your office?""
"I'll put it somewhere very special.""
He ran back upstairs.
I folded the drawing carefully and placed it inside my handbag.
When I looked up, Lorraine was watching me.
Her expression was difficult to read.
Then she turned toward Claire.
"Come help me with the decorations.""
Claire didn't move.
"Mom, I want to know what happened.""
Lorraine's voice sharpened.
"Claire.""
"No. Why is my name on that document?""
Lorraine stepped closer.
"Because I was trying to protect you.""
"From what?""
"From losing everything when Margaret decides she no longer wants you here.""
I stared at her.
"That's an interesting argument, considering someone tried to take the entire property without my permission.""
Lorraine ignored me.
She reached for Claire's hand.
"Darling, your husband has spent years building a life here. You have a child. You deserve security.""
Claire pulled her hand away.
"Did you forge my signature?""
Lorraine went completely still.
The question seemed to surprise even Daniel.
"Don't be ridiculous," she said.
"Then tell me why it's there.""
"Someone must have copied it.""
"Who?""
"I don't know!""
Claire's voice trembled.
"Mom, did you do this?""
Lorraine looked around the room.
Then she lowered her voice.
"Not here.""
That was all she said.
Not here.
I watched Claire's face change.
She understood something.
Maybe not everything.
But enough to realize her mother wasn't simply confused.
Rebecca quietly wrote something in her notebook.
At 9:05, Thomas Reed arrived.
He entered carrying a laptop and a thick envelope.
"Mrs. Hale.""
"Thank you for coming, Thomas.""
He placed the envelope on the coffee table.
"I brought the security records.""
Rebecca opened it.
Inside were copies of the work orders, email instructions, and invoices from the security company.
She began reading.
After several minutes, she stopped at one page.
"Thomas, who requested the temporary replacement of the front entrance locks?""
He looked uncomfortable.
"Mrs. Whitmore.""
Lorraine turned sharply.
"That's not true.""
Thomas continued.
"She told us the old locks were unreliable and that the family needed a new access system.""
"Did she have authorization?"" Rebecca asked.
"She said Mr. Hale had approved it.""
Rebecca turned toward Daniel.
"Did you?""
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't remember.""
Thomas opened his laptop.
"There was another issue.""
He clicked through several files.
"On September 21, someone requested an additional digital access code for the study.""
My stomach tightened.
"The study?""
"Yes, ma'am.""
"Who requested it?""
Thomas hesitated.
Then he turned the laptop around.
The name on the service request was clear.
*Claire Hale.*
Claire took a step backward.
"No.""
Thomas looked at her.
"I'm sorry.""
"I never requested that.""
"Mrs. Hale, the request came from your email account.""
Rebecca leaned closer.
"Was the code actually installed?""
Thomas nodded.
"Yes.""
"Who received it?""
He opened another record.
A second name appeared.
*Lorraine Whitmore.*
The room fell silent.
Daniel looked at his mother-in-law.
"You had access to Mom's study?""
Lorraine's expression hardened.
"I was helping Claire organize the household.""
"That's not what I asked.""
"Daniel, don't speak to me like that.""
He stared at her.
"You had the code?""
Lorraine folded her arms.
"I had permission.""
"From whom?""
She didn't answer.
Rebecca placed the service request beside the forged transfer.
"Mrs. Whitmore, you now appear in the records associated with the security changes, the additional study access, and the company named in the attempted transfer.""
Lorraine's face turned red.
"That proves absolutely nothing.""
"It proves that the investigation should examine your involvement.""
Lorraine grabbed her handbag.
"I'm leaving.""
Rebecca stood.
"Before you do, I have one more question.""
Lorraine stopped.
"What?""
"Have you ever met a man named Victor Lang?""
The name meant nothing to me.
But the reaction in the room was immediate.
Lorraine's fingers tightened around her handbag.
Claire looked at her mother.
Daniel frowned.
"Who's Victor Lang?""
Lorraine swallowed.
"I don't know anyone by that name.""
Rebecca opened the blue folder again.
"That's interesting.""
She removed a printed email.
"Because this message was sent to your company six weeks ago. It discusses the Greenwich property, the trust documents, and a proposed transfer schedule.""
Lorraine stared at the page.
Rebecca continued.
"The sender identifies himself as Victor Lang, a property consultant. The recipient is your business email address.""
I looked at Lorraine.
"Who is he?""
She shook her head.
"I have no idea.""
Rebecca placed the email on the table.
"Then perhaps you can explain why he wrote, and I quote, 'The owner must be out of the property before the final documents are executed.''"
Daniel went completely still.
Claire's lips parted.
I felt the room tilt around me.
The sentence was unmistakable.
The owner must be out of the property.
I looked at Rebecca.
Then at Lorraine.
And suddenly, the three o'clock conversation took on an entirely different meaning.
My son hadn't simply decided I should miss a birthday party.
Someone had wanted me gone.
Someone had needed the house empty.
Someone had been preparing to make a transfer that required my absence.
I turned toward Daniel.
"Did you know about this?""
He shook his head.
"No, Mom. I swear.""
Rebecca examined the email again.
"There's something else.""
She turned the page.
At the bottom was a meeting confirmation.
The meeting had been scheduled for the previous night.
11:30 p.m.
Location: The Greenwich estate.
Attendees: Victor Lang, Lorraine Whitmore, and Daniel Hale.
My son stared at the page.
His face became almost gray.
Claire slowly turned toward him.
"Daniel?""
He took a step backward.
"I can explain.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"Then explain.""
He looked at me.
Then at Lorraine.
And finally, in a voice so quiet I almost couldn't hear him, he said:
"Mom, Victor wasn't supposed to come here last night.""
Rebecca closed the folder.
"Mr. Hale, where is Victor Lang now?""
Daniel swallowed.
May you like
Then he gave us an answer that made Claire scream.
"He's in the guesthouse.""
