Chapter 8: The Letter From a Dead Man

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

Because my mind refused to accept the words.

*I discovered what Vanessa did the night Sophie was born, and I am sorry I waited too long to tell you.*

The paper trembled in my hands.

Daniel stood beside me, staring at his father’s handwriting like it was a ghost speaking from the past.

“My dad wrote this?””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

He reached for the letter.

But before he touched it, he stopped.

Almost like he was afraid.

Not of the paper.

Of the truth.

“Read it,” he whispered.

So I did.

My eyes moved across the page.

*Claire,*

*If this letter reaches you, then I failed to do what I should have done while I was alive. I should have protected you and my grandchildren when I had the chance.*

I swallowed.

Daniel looked away.

His father had always been a difficult man.

Strict.

Proud.

A man who believed emotions were weaknesses.

But this letter sounded different.

It sounded like regret.

*Vanessa has always been good at making people believe she is the victim. She learned that skill long before you met her.*

*She knows how to create a problem, then become the person who offers the solution.*

My heart tightened.

Because those words described Vanessa perfectly.

Daniel read over my shoulder.

His jaw clenched.

*The night Sophie was born, Vanessa came to the hospital because she believed she had finally found a way to control Daniel.*

*She believed Claire’s previous miscarriage gave her an opportunity.*

I stopped.

Daniel looked at me.

“Keep going.””

I continued.

*She knew Claire was afraid. She knew Claire blamed herself for losing the first baby, even though she had no reason to. Vanessa used that fear.*

*She wanted Daniel to doubt his marriage. She wanted him to doubt Claire.*

*But there was something she didn’t expect.*

*Sophie.*

I felt tears forming.

My baby girl.

Even before she entered this world, Vanessa had tried to turn her into a weapon.

*Sophie’s birth records were never the problem. The hospital mistake was real, but Vanessa exaggerated it.*

*She used confusion to create suspicion.*

*She convinced Daniel to leave the room because she knew he would listen to her as his sister.*

Daniel closed his eyes.

A painful expression crossed his face.

“She planned that.””

I nodded.

“She planned every step.””

*While Daniel was away, Vanessa accessed documents she had no right to see.*

*She also took a newborn sample.*

*Not because she wanted the truth.*

*Because she wanted leverage.*

My hand covered my mouth.

A newborn sample.

The thought made me sick.

Daniel’s voice was barely audible.

“She stole from our daughter.””

I looked at him.

“She stole from all of us.””

*I confronted Vanessa the following week.*

*I told her I knew what she was doing.*

*She laughed.*

*She told me nobody would believe an old man defending his daughter-in-law over his own daughter.*

Daniel froze.

“She threatened Dad?””

I kept reading.

*She was right. I protected her too long.*

*I told myself I was keeping peace.*

*But silence is not peace when someone is being harmed.*

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because that was exactly what Daniel had done.

What everyone had done.

They called it protection.

But it was silence.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, I need you to know something.*

*Your sister does not want Sophie.*

*She wants what Sophie represents.*

*A way back into power.*

*A way to control you.*

I turned the page.

The next section was written differently.

More urgently.

*There is one thing I never told anyone.*

*Vanessa did not act alone.*

My heart stopped.

Daniel leaned closer.

*Someone inside this family helped her.*

*Someone who had access to information Vanessa could never have obtained by herself.*

The storage room suddenly felt colder.

Daniel looked around.

“Someone in the family?””

I nodded.

“But who?””

The letter continued.

*I discovered the name shortly before I became ill.*

*I planned to confront them.*

*But before I could, Vanessa found out.*

*She destroyed the evidence.*

My hands shook.

“Thomas knew.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“He knew.””

Then came the final lines.

The ones that changed everything.

*Claire, I am sorry.*

*If Vanessa has already hurt your family, then she has probably convinced you that the truth is something to fear.*

*It is not.*

*The truth is the only thing she cannot control.*

*Look for the person who benefits from your pain.*

*That person is the one who started this.*

*—Thomas Bennett*

I lowered the letter.

Neither of us spoke.

Because the answer was sitting there.

Someone benefited from our pain.

Someone wanted Daniel to question me.

Someone wanted Vanessa to look like the protector.

Someone wanted our family broken.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

*You found the letter. Good. Now ask Daniel who really paid for Sophie’s medical care.*

Daniel stared at the screen.

My heart sank.

“Who is that?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel?””

He looked at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not suspicion.

Fear.

“Claire…”

“What?””

“My father’s company didn’t just pay Vanessa.””

My stomach tightened.

“What else?””

Daniel swallowed.

“It paid for Sophie’s entire birth.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

He looked at the letter.

“At the time, I thought my father was just helping us.””

“And now?””

“Now I don’t know.””

The room went quiet.

Because there was one question neither of us wanted to ask.

Why would Thomas Bennett secretly pay for everything?

And why would Vanessa know about it?

We returned home after midnight.

The house was dark.

Quiet.

Normal.

But it didn’t feel normal anymore.

Every room held a memory.

Every memory held a question.

Daniel checked on Ethan first.

Then Sophie.

I stood in the doorway watching him.

He kissed Sophie’s forehead.

“I’m sorry.””

I heard him whisper.

“I should have protected you.””

Something inside me softened.

Because despite everything.

Despite the secrets.

Daniel was still the man who held our children like they were the most precious things in the world.

But then he turned around.

And his expression changed.

“Claire.””

“What?””

“You need to see this.””

He held his laptop.

On the screen was an email.

An old one.

From Thomas Bennett’s company.

The subject line:

*PROJECT FAMILY RESTORATION*

I frowned.

“What is that?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel opened the attachment.

Inside were several files.

The first one was a list of names.

The second was financial records.

The third…

Made my blood run cold.

A photograph.

A photograph of Vanessa standing outside our house.

Taken two months before Sophie was born.

But she wasn’t alone.

Standing beside her was another person.

Someone I recognized.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who had been helping us.

Daniel zoomed in.

My breath disappeared.

Because the person standing next to Vanessa was not a stranger.

It was someone from our own family.

Someone who had been comforting me.

Someone who had been telling me everything would be okay.

Daniel whispered:

“Claire…”

I stared at the screen.

“No.””

But there was no denying it.

The picture was clear.

And underneath it was a file name.

*PLAN FINAL — MOTHER AND CHILD SEPARATION*

My hands went cold.

Because the person beside Vanessa had been part of the plan from the beginning.

And then the front door opened.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Someone had entered the house.

Daniel immediately stepped in front of me.

“Who’s there?””

A familiar voice answered from the darkness.

“Daniel…”

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that voice.

It was someone who should never have been here.

Someone who had promised to help us.

Someone who knew all our secrets.

And now they were standing in our home.

The voice continued:

“You need to hear the truth before Vanessa tells you her version.””

The lights flicked on.

May you like

And the person standing there held a folder in their hands.

A folder with Sophie’s name on it.
