Chapter 5: The Night Sophie Was Born

Daniel didn’t move.

The message from Vanessa remained glowing on my phone screen.

*You should ask Daniel why he never told you what happened the night Sophie was born.*

I watched my husband’s face.

That was the moment I knew.

Not because of Vanessa.

Not because of the message.

Because Daniel looked like someone who had just been caught carrying a secret he had buried for too long.

“Daniel.””

My voice was barely above a whisper.

“What happened that night?””

He looked away.

That hurt more than anything.

Because Daniel had always looked at me.

When I cried.

When I was angry.

When we fought.

When we celebrated.

He always looked at me.

But now he couldn’t.

“I was going to tell you.””

The words felt like a wound.

“When?””

He swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because sometimes disappointment sounds like laughter.

“You don’t know?””

“Claire…”

“No.””

I stood up.

“I need you to answer me.””

The folder on the table suddenly felt meaningless.

The DNA test.

Vanessa’s lies.

The recordings.

All of it.

Because the person standing in front of me was my husband.

The person I trusted most.

And he had something he hadn’t told me.

Daniel rubbed his hands over his face.

“The night Sophie was born…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“I got a phone call.””

“From who?””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation terrified me.

“Vanessa.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“She said there was a problem at the hospital.””

“What problem?””

Daniel looked at the hallway where Sophie’s room was.

Then he whispered:

“She said someone had questioned whether Sophie was really ours.””

I felt cold.

“But you said Vanessa only started talking about that after Sophie was born.””

“She did.””

“Then why did she call you that night?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because she was the first person who knew.””

“Before me?””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

The pain wasn’t loud.

It was quiet.

Heavy.

“Why?””

“Because she was there.””

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I didn’t tell you because I knew how much you had been through.””

My voice shook.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“Why was your sister at the hospital?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Because you asked her to come.””

I froze.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“I never asked Vanessa to come.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Yes, you did.””

“Daniel, I was in labor. I was barely conscious. I called my mother. I called you.””

“I know.””

“Then who called her?””

Neither of us spoke.

Because suddenly the answer was obvious.

Someone had invited Vanessa.

Someone had wanted her there.

Daniel slowly opened the folder again.

“I found something else.””

He pulled out a printed email.

The date was from the night Sophie was born.

The sender name was hidden.

But the message was clear.

*She’s here. Come now.*

The recipient?

Vanessa.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“Who sent that?””

“We don’t know.””

“Did Marcus know?””

Daniel shook his head.

“He said Vanessa deleted most of her records.””

I looked at the email.

“She planned this.””

Daniel nodded.

“But I don’t understand why.””

I did.

Or at least I had a terrifying guess.

“Because she wanted control.””

Daniel looked at me.

“She knew about my miscarriage. She knew I was scared. She knew exactly what information could hurt me.””

I pointed at the folder.

“She collected everything.””

The realization made my skin crawl.

“She didn’t discover a secret.””

I looked at Daniel.

“She created one.””

That evening, Daniel and I went through every document Marcus had given him.

There were notes from Vanessa.

Private conversations.

Medical information.

Even photographs.

She had been watching us.

Not for days.

Not for weeks.

Months.

“She was obsessed,” Daniel said quietly.

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“She wasn’t obsessed with us.””

I looked at the photos.

At my family.

At my children.

“She was obsessed with destroying something.””

Daniel was silent.

Then he found another page.

His face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

It was a handwritten note.

Vanessa’s handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

*Daniel trusts Claire too much.*

Below it:

*Need proof before confronting him.*

And another sentence:

*The baby will expose everything.*

My hands started trembling.

“The baby.””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“Sophie.””

At that moment, a small cry came from upstairs.

Both of us stood instantly.

Sophie.

We ran.

Daniel reached her first.

He picked her up from the crib.

“She’s okay.””

I watched him hold her.

And something broke inside me.

Because despite everything.

Despite the fear.

Despite the doubts.

He loved her.

She was his daughter.

I knew it.

He knew it.

Somewhere deep down, even now, he knew it.

Sophie wrapped her tiny fingers around his shirt.

Daniel looked at her.

“I’m sorry, princess.””

A tear fell from his face.

“I should have protected you.””

I looked away.

Because seeing my husband cry was almost harder than seeing him angry.

Then my eyes landed on something near the crib.

A small piece of paper.

I frowned.

“Daniel.””

He turned.

“What?””

I pointed.

He picked it up.

It was folded twice.

Inside was a single sentence.

Written in black ink.

*Ask Claire what happened three days before Sophie was born.*

My blood froze.

Daniel looked at me.

“What happened three days before Sophie was born?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I remembered.

A day I had tried to forget.

A day that suddenly felt connected to everything.

Three days before Sophie’s birth, I had received a phone call.

A call from a number I didn’t recognize.

The woman on the phone had asked me one question.

A question I never told Daniel.

“Are you sure you want to raise a child that isn’t yours?””

I had hung up immediately.

I thought it was a cruel prank.

A mistake.

Something meaningless.

But now…

Now I knew it wasn’t random.

Someone had been trying to scare me before Sophie was even born.

Daniel watched my face.

“You remember something.””

I slowly nodded.

“Yes.””

“What?””

I looked at my husband.

And for the first time in our marriage, I was afraid to tell him the truth.

“Someone called me.””

“When?””

“Three days before Sophie was born.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What did they say?””

I swallowed.

“They said Sophie wasn’t yours.””

The room became completely silent.

Daniel looked at our daughter.

Then at me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought it was a horrible joke.””

“And you forgot?””

“No.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“I buried it.””

Daniel looked hurt.

“Why?””

“Because I was exhausted. Because I was scared. Because I had just given birth and I couldn’t handle one more thing making me feel like I was losing my family.””

He sat down slowly.

“I wish you told me.””

“I know.””

The truth hurt both of us.

But before either of us could say anything else, Daniel’s phone rang.

Marcus.

He answered immediately.

“Hello?””

The voice on the other end sounded rushed.

“Daniel, you need to listen carefully.””

“What happened?””

“I found out who ordered the DNA test.””

Daniel stood.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then Marcus said:

“It wasn’t Vanessa.””

My heart stopped.

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Then who was it?””

The answer came quietly.

And it changed everything.

“Claire’s doctor.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“My doctor?””

Marcus continued.

“The same doctor who handled your miscarriage.””

Daniel looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

May you like

Because suddenly the person we thought was helping us…

Might have been the person who started this entire nightmare.
