Chapter 6: The Doctor Who Knew Too Much

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The doctor.

The one person I had trusted when I felt the most broken.

The person who held my hand after I lost my first baby.

The person who told me I wasn’t to blame.

The person who knew every detail of my fear.

And now Marcus was saying he might have been part of it.

“No,” I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

“Claire.””

I shook my head.

“No. That doesn’t make sense.””

Marcus’s voice came through the phone.

“I know it sounds impossible.””

Daniel’s grip tightened.

“Then explain.””

There was a pause.

“I found the paperwork trail. The DNA test wasn’t ordered randomly. It was requested through a medical office.””

“Which office?””

The answer came immediately.

“Dr. Henry Collins.””

My stomach dropped.

Daniel looked at me.

“Your doctor?””

I nodded slowly.

But my mind was already somewhere else.

Back in that small examination room.

Back to the smell of antiseptic.

Back to the doctor’s gentle voice.

You didn’t do anything wrong, Claire.

Had that been a lie?

“I need proof,” Daniel said.

“I have some,” Marcus replied.

“What kind?””

“Payment records.””

The room went silent.

“Who paid him?”” Daniel asked.

Marcus hesitated.

“That’s the part you’re not going to like.””

My hand went to my mouth.

“Vanessa?””

“No.””

Marcus’s voice became lower.

“The payment came from an account connected to someone else.””

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your father’s old company.””

Daniel froze.

My heart sank.

Because Daniel’s father had been dead for six years.

“What does that mean?”” Daniel asked.

“I don’t know yet.””

The line went quiet.

Then Marcus added:

“But Daniel, there’s something else.””

“What?””

“The DNA test Vanessa had wasn’t the first one.””

I felt a chill.

“What do you mean?””

Marcus answered:

“There were two.””

Daniel stared at the phone.

“Two tests?””

“Yes.””

“Where is the other one?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Vanessa has it.””

The call ended.

Daniel didn’t speak for several minutes.

Neither did I.

The house felt unfamiliar.

Like every wall had been hiding something.

Like every happy memory had a shadow behind it.

Finally, Daniel said:

“We’re going to Dr. Collins.””

I looked at him.

“Now?””

“Yes.””

“It’s midnight.””

“I don’t care.””

I understood.

Because when someone threatens your family, waiting becomes impossible.

But before we could leave, a small voice came from the stairs.

“Mom?””

We turned.

Ethan stood there.

Again.

Watching.

Again.

I hated that my son had become someone who listened for danger.

Daniel immediately walked toward him.

“You okay, buddy?””

Ethan nodded.

Then looked at me.

“Are you and Dad fighting?””

My heart broke.

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

I knelt down.

“Yes.””

He looked between us.

“Because everyone keeps saying things are going to change.””

My breath caught.

“Who said that?””

He looked down.

“Aunt Vanessa.””

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“What did she say?””

Ethan hesitated.

“She said when Dad learned the truth, he wouldn’t want us anymore.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

I pulled Ethan into my arms.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

He buried his face against me.

“She said Sophie would be taken away.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

For a moment, I saw the father in him fighting the anger.

Because Vanessa hadn’t only hurt Ethan.

She had tried to make him afraid of losing his family.

Daniel crouched beside us.

“Listen to me.””

Ethan looked up.

“Your sister is not going anywhere.””

“But…”

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was firm.

“She is your sister. She is my daughter. She is your mom’s daughter. Nothing changes that.””

Ethan nodded.

But he still looked scared.

Daniel placed a hand on his shoulder.

“And nobody gets to make you feel unsafe in your own home again.””

For the first time that night, I saw something return to Daniel’s eyes.

Not just anger.

Determination.

Dr. Collins’ clinic was closed.

Of course it was.

But Daniel didn’t leave.

He called the emergency number listed on the door.

A receptionist answered.

“This is Dr. Collins’ office.””

“My name is Daniel Bennett. I need to speak with Dr. Collins.””

“I’m sorry, sir. The doctor is unavailable.””

“Tell him it’s about the DNA test.””

The silence on the other end lasted too long.

Then:

“Please hold.””

Daniel and I looked at each other.

Because that reaction said everything.

Someone had been waiting for this conversation.

A minute later, a tired voice answered.

“Daniel?””

Dr. Collins.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

The same voice I remembered.

“Doctor.””

“What’s going on?””

Daniel didn’t waste time.

“Did you authorize a DNA test on my daughter?””

Silence.

A long one.

Then:

“Who told you that?””

My entire body went cold.

Because he didn’t deny it.

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“That wasn’t my question.””

Dr. Collins sighed.

“I was trying to protect Claire.””

I felt sick.

“Protect me?””

The doctor heard my voice.

“Claire?””

“Yes.””

The line went quiet.

“You shouldn’t be involved in this conversation.””

I almost laughed.

“You made a DNA test about my daughter.””

“Claire, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“No, you listen to me. I trusted you.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

Another silence.

Then he said:

“Because Vanessa came to me.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What did she ask you to do?””

“She said she was worried.””

“About what?””

The doctor didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer to the phone.

“Doctor Collins.””

A deep breath.

“She wanted proof that Sophie was safe.””

I frowned.

“Safe?””

“Yes.””

“What does that mean?””

The doctor sounded exhausted.

“It means Vanessa believed someone had tampered with your medical records.””

My confusion grew.

“What?””

“Claire, the night Sophie was born, there was a mistake.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What mistake?””

Dr. Collins continued.

“Two newborn records were temporarily mixed during a system update.””

The room went silent.

My hand covered my mouth.

“No.””

“Yes.””

My knees felt weak.

“But Sophie…”

“She was corrected quickly.””

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””

“Because the hospital confirmed the mistake before you were discharged.””

Daniel interrupted.

“But Vanessa knew?””

“Yes.””

My blood ran cold.

“How?””

The doctor hesitated.

“She had access to information she shouldn’t have had.””

There it was.

The answer.

Vanessa had not guessed.

She had known.

She had been collecting pieces from the beginning.

Daniel asked:

“Did my daughter’s DNA test show she wasn’t mine?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“No.””

I closed my eyes.

Relief hit me so suddenly I almost cried.

Then Dr. Collins continued:

“The test showed something else.””

My eyes opened.

“What?””

The doctor became quiet.

“The DNA sample Vanessa provided wasn’t from Sophie.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“It was from another child.””

My heart stopped.

Another child?

“Then why would she use it?””

Dr. Collins sighed.

“Because she wanted you to believe there was a problem.””

I looked at Daniel.

The pieces were finally connecting.

Vanessa didn’t have proof.

She had manufactured doubt.

But then Daniel asked the question we were all thinking.

“Why?””

The doctor answered softly.

“Because she wanted something from you.””

“What?””

Another pause.

Then:

“She wanted custody.””

The word echoed.

Custody.

My daughter.

My baby.

My family.

The doctor continued.

“Vanessa believed if she could prove Claire was hiding information from you, and convince you Sophie wasn’t yours, she could position herself as the only person who could ‘protect’ the child.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“She wanted my daughter.””

“Yes.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Anger.

Someone had tried to take my baby.

Someone had hurt my son.

Someone had entered my home and called it help.

Then Dr. Collins said one more thing.

Something that changed everything.

“Daniel, there’s something I never told Claire.””

I looked at the phone.

“What?””

The doctor’s voice became barely audible.

“The night Sophie was born…”

A pause.

“I saw Vanessa leaving the maternity ward with a file in her hand.””

Daniel went still.

“What file?””

The doctor whispered:

“The original birth records.””

The call ended.

And at that exact moment, Daniel’s phone received a message.

From Vanessa.

One photo.

No words.

Just an image of a hospital document.

With my name on it.

And underneath the picture was a single sentence:

*Now ask your husband why he really left the hospital that night.*
