Chapter 4: The Stranger Who Knew My Secret
Daniel didn’t say anything for three seconds after the stranger’s words.
Three seconds.
That was all it took for my imagination to create a thousand different possibilities.
A stranger who knew my secret.
A stranger who had my husband’s number.
A stranger who had somehow been connected to Vanessa’s plan.
My fingers tightened around the edge of the kitchen table.
Daniel looked at me.
His eyes were asking a question.
But he didn’t ask it yet.
Not while the man was still on the phone.
“Who is this?”” Daniel demanded.
The voice on the other end remained calm.
“My name is Marcus Reed.””
Daniel’s expression changed slightly.
Not recognition.
Concern.
“What do you want?””
A quiet laugh came through the speaker.
“I want to stop your sister before she ruins another family.””
The word another made my stomach twist.
Daniel stood straighter.
“Explain.””
“I can’t do that over the phone.””
“Then why call me?””
“Because Vanessa knows I have information.””
A pause.
“And she knows I might tell you.””
Daniel looked at the recording device sitting on the table.
“Where did you get my number?””
“I got it from Vanessa.””
My heart dropped.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You’re lying.””
“No.””
The stranger’s voice became serious.
“She gave it to me months ago. She told me if things went wrong, I should contact you.””
I looked at Daniel.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
He covered the phone microphone.
“I know.””
Then he returned to the call.
“What information?””
The man hesitated.
“The truth about Sophie.””
My entire body went cold.
Daniel’s hand slowly lowered.
“What did you say?””
“The truth about your daughter.””
I felt like the room tilted.
Not again.
Not another person questioning my child.
Not another person turning my daughter into a weapon.
Daniel’s voice became dangerous.
“Listen carefully. If you know anything about my daughter, you tell me now.””
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because if Vanessa finds out I talked to you, she’ll destroy the evidence.””
Daniel looked at me.
“What evidence?””
The stranger sighed.
“I have documents.””
“What kind of documents?””
A pause.
Then:
“Documents that prove Vanessa has been lying to you for years.””
The call ended.
Just like that.
Daniel stared at the phone.
I stared at him.
Neither of us moved.
Then Daniel called back.
No answer.
Again.
Straight to voicemail.
I finally spoke.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“I don’t know what’s happening.””
His voice sounded different.
Not angry.
Lost.
“I thought I understood.””
I reached for him.
This time, he let me hold his hand.
“We’ll figure it out.””
But even as I said those words, I felt something I hated admitting.
Fear.
Because Vanessa’s plan had already gone further than we imagined.
And we still didn’t know why.
Two hours later, Daniel found Marcus.
Not at his house.
Not at his workplace.
At a small coffee shop twenty minutes from our neighborhood.
He insisted I stay home with the children.
I wanted to go.
I needed answers.
But when Daniel looked at me and said, “I need to know what he wants before I bring you into this,” I understood.
So I waited.
And waiting was torture.
Every sound outside made me look toward the window.
Every passing car made my heart race.
Ethan noticed.
He always noticed.
“Mom?””
I turned.
“Yeah?””
He stood in the doorway holding Sophie’s stuffed rabbit.
“Are you scared?””
I forced a smile.
“No.””
He tilted his head.
“You always say that when you are.””
My eyes burned.
Because my eight-year-old son had become too good at reading fear.
I walked over and sat beside him.
“I’m a little scared.””
He nodded.
“Me too.””
I looked at him.
“Ethan…”
He squeezed the stuffed rabbit.
“Is Dad mad at you?””
The question hurt.
“Why would you think that?””
“Because Aunt Vanessa said Dad was going to find out.””
My heart stopped.
“What did she say?””
Ethan looked down.
“The day before you came home early.””
I sat up.
“Ethan, tell me everything.””
He swallowed.
“She was talking on the phone.””
“With who?””
“I don’t know.””
“What did she say?””
He closed his eyes, trying to remember.
“She said, ‘Once Daniel knows, Claire will have no one left.’”
My blood ran cold.
No one left.
That wasn’t about a secret.
That was about destroying me.
I pulled Ethan close.
“Did she say anything else?””
He nodded slowly.
“She said…”
He hesitated.
“What?””
“She said Sophie was the key.””
I froze.
Sophie.
My baby girl.
The child who had done nothing except exist.
The child Vanessa had been targeting since the beginning.
Before I could ask more, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered immediately.
“Daniel?””
His breathing sounded heavy.
“Claire.””
“What happened?””
A long pause.
Then:
“Marcus told me everything.””
I stood.
“What everything?””
“I’m coming home.””
“Daniel, what did he say?””
Another pause.
And then my husband said the words that made my entire body go numb.
“Claire… Marcus says Sophie isn’t my biological daughter.””
The world stopped.
I couldn’t hear anything.
Not the television.
Not the rain.
Not even my own breathing.
“No.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Daniel, no.””
“I know what you’re thinking.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t understand.””
“I’m coming home.””
“Tell me what he said.””
Silence.
Then Daniel whispered:
“He says Vanessa has a DNA test.””
My knees weakened.
I grabbed the chair.
“A DNA test?””
“Yes.””
“From where?””
“He didn’t know.””
My mind raced.
The hospital.
The doctor.
The pregnancy.
The miscarriage.
The fear.
Everything crashed together.
“But that’s impossible.””
Daniel’s voice softened.
“Claire…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No, Daniel. Listen to me.””
“I am listening.””
“Sophie is yours.””
I said it firmly.
Because I knew.
I had never doubted it.
Not once.
“I love you,” I continued.
“I would never betray you.””
“I know.””
But his voice carried something else.
A crack.
A tiny crack of uncertainty.
And that hurt more than anger.
Because Daniel was fighting between what he knew about me and what someone had placed in front of him.
“I need you to trust me,” I whispered.
“I do.””
“Then why do you sound like that?””
He didn’t answer.
Because neither of us wanted to say the truth.
Trust was not a switch.
It was something fragile.
Something that could break with one piece of evidence.
“I’m almost home,” he said.
The call ended.
I stood there holding the phone.
Ethan watched me carefully.
“Mom?””
I wiped my face quickly.
“It’s okay.””
He frowned.
“You said that when you were scared.””
I looked at my son.
And for the first time, I didn’t know how to comfort him.
Because I didn’t know how to comfort myself.
When Daniel arrived, he didn’t come inside immediately.
He sat in the car.
For ten minutes.
I watched from the window.
A part of me wanted to run outside.
Another part was afraid of what I would see on his face.
Finally, he walked in.
He looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Just broken.
He placed a folder on the table.
“What is that?””
“The documents Marcus gave me.””
My hands hovered above it.
I didn’t want to touch it.
Because somehow I knew.
Whatever was inside would change our lives.
Daniel sat down.
“Marcus worked with Vanessa years ago.””
“With what?””
“A private investigation company.””
My eyes widened.
“She hired him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at the folder.
“Because she wanted information about our family.””
My stomach twisted.
I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Medical records.
Notes.
And one document that made my heart stop.
A DNA test.
I stared at the name.
Then at the date.
Then at the result.
Daniel watched my face.
“Claire…”
I looked up.
And my voice barely came out.
“This test…”
I pointed at the paper.
“This isn’t Sophie’s.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
I turned the page toward him.
“This is from the pregnancy before Sophie.””
His expression changed.
Because suddenly everything became clear.
The test Vanessa had found.
The secret she had twisted.
The truth she had buried.
But before we could understand it, my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Vanessa.
One sentence.
*You should ask Daniel why he never told you what happened the night Sophie was born.*
I stared at the screen.
Daniel saw my face.
“What did she send?””
I slowly handed him the phone.
He read the message.
And his expression changed.
May you like
Because for the first time…
He looked afraid of his own secret.
