Chapter 9: The Last Lie Before the Truth
The sight of my father standing beside Lauren outside our house felt like the final piece of a nightmare I couldn't wake up from.
For hours, I had tried to separate the people who loved me from the people who had hurt me.
I had told myself there had to be explanations.
There had to be misunderstandings.
There had to be some reason my mother stayed silent, why Lauren collected information about me, why Daniel appeared at our door with secrets from twenty years ago.
But now Robert Walker stood beneath the cold December sky beside the very person who had tried to take my daughter from me.
And suddenly, I understood.
This wasn't a family argument.
This was a battle over the truth.
James moved toward the window.
His entire body had changed.
The sadness was gone.
The confusion was gone.
Only focus remained.
"Stay behind me.""
I held Emma tighter.
"No.""
He looked at me.
"Claire.""
"I've spent all night standing behind everyone else while they decided what was best for me.""
My voice shook.
"But not anymore.""
James stared at me for a moment.
Then he nodded.
Because he knew.
I wasn't the same person who had walked into Christmas dinner hours earlier.
That woman had trusted everyone.
This woman didn't know who deserved it.
The front door opened before James reached it.
My father walked inside.
Lauren followed.
Neither of them looked surprised to see Daniel.
That alone told me everything.
They expected him to be here.
My father's eyes moved across the room.
To James.
To me.
To Emma.
Then finally to Daniel.
"Daniel.""
His voice was cold.
Not shocked.
Not confused.
Cold.
Daniel laughed quietly.
"So that's it?""
My father looked at him.
"You're going to believe him?""
James stepped forward.
"No.""
His voice was controlled.
"I'm going to believe the evidence.""
Robert's face tightened.
"What evidence?""
James held up the photograph.
"The evidence you buried.""
For the first time, my father looked uncertain.
Only for a second.
But it was there.
Lauren noticed too.
She immediately stepped forward.
"Don't listen to them.""
I looked at her.
The confidence was back.
The same confidence she had when she told me Emma was fine after making her cry.
"Lauren.""
She looked at me.
"You don't understand what's happening.""
I almost laughed.
"You've said that all night.""
Her expression hardened.
"Because you don't.""
James stared at her.
"You worked with Daniel.""
She didn't deny it.
That silence was enough.
My father looked at Lauren.
"You were supposed to handle this.""
My stomach dropped.
Supposed to?
I felt James go still beside me.
"What did you just say?""
My father's face changed.
"I didn't mean—"
"No.""
James stepped closer.
"What did you mean?""
Lauren looked nervous.
For the first time, she looked at my father differently.
Not like someone she trusted.
Like someone she feared.
I realized something.
Lauren wasn't the mastermind.
She was a piece.
A dangerous piece.
But still a piece.
James looked between them.
"You used her.""
My father said nothing.
"You used my sister to attack my wife.""
"No.""
Lauren's voice came out sharp.
"No, he didn't.""
Everyone looked at her.
She swallowed.
Then looked at my father.
"Tell them.""
My father remained silent.
"Tell them you said it was the only way.""
My blood ran cold.
"Only way to do what?""
Nobody answered.
Then James said:
"To get custody.""
Lauren looked away.
And that was confirmation.
My father's shoulders dropped.
For the first time, he looked old.
Not powerful.
Not intimidating.
Just tired.
"James...""
"Don't.""
The pain in James's voice was worse than anger.
"Don't say my name like you still have the right.""
My father flinched.
I had never seen James speak to him that way.
"What happened that night?"" James asked.
Robert looked at Daniel.
Then at the floor.
"I made a mistake.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"A mistake?""
My father looked at him.
"You don't get to judge me.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Sarah died because of what you did.""
The room went silent.
James stared at our father.
"What did you do?""
Robert closed his eyes.
And for a moment, I thought he wouldn't answer.
Then he did.
"I was driving.""
James froze.
The words seemed impossible.
"You?""
My father nodded slowly.
"The night of the accident.""
Daniel's face changed.
Even he looked shocked.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Robert looked at him.
"Because you were already drowning.""
Daniel stared.
"I took the blame.""
"No.""
My father shook his head.
"You were with her.""
The room became silent.
James looked between them.
"I don't understand.""
My father swallowed.
"Sarah was angry with me.""
"Why?""
"Because she found out.""
James frowned.
"Found out what?""
Robert looked at me.
Then at James.
"The financial problems.""
I didn't understand.
"What financial problems?""
Daniel's face changed.
My father continued.
"Daniel owed money.""
James looked at his brother.
"You told me it was just debt.""
Daniel looked away.
Robert continued.
"But it was more than that.""
He took a breath.
"Someone was threatening him.""
The room was silent.
James's voice was quiet.
"And Sarah knew?""
Robert nodded.
"She wanted to go to the police.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
My father continued.
"That night, Sarah was going to tell everything.""
James stared.
"So you followed her?""
"No.""
My father shook his head.
"I was trying to stop her.""
The words sounded worse.
"Stop her?""
"I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
My father looked at him.
"Of losing everything.""
I felt sick.
Because that sentence sounded familiar.
Everyone tonight had been afraid of losing something.
Lauren.
Daniel.
My father.
And they had all hurt people because of it.
James looked at him.
"What happened?""
My father's voice cracked.
"I was driving too fast.""
A pause.
"Sarah was crossing the road.""
Nobody moved.
"The accident happened.""
James looked like he couldn't breathe.
"And you covered it up.""
Robert nodded.
"I panicked.""
"You let me believe Daniel caused it.""
"I was trying to protect you.""
James laughed once.
A broken sound.
"No.""
He shook his head.
"You were protecting yourself.""
My father didn't argue.
Because he knew.
I looked at Lauren.
"And you?""
She looked at me.
"I didn't know everything.""
"Really?""
Her eyes filled with anger.
"I knew James was hiding something.""
"That doesn't justify what you did.""
She looked away.
"I wanted him to lose.""
The honesty shocked me.
"Why?""
Her face changed.
Because beneath all the cruelty was something wounded.
"I spent my whole life watching everyone choose you.""
I stared at her.
"Lauren—"
"No.""
She wiped her eyes.
"You were always the good daughter.""
My heart sank.
"That's not true.""
"Mom always defended you.""
"Because I was younger.""
"Because you needed help.""
Her voice cracked.
"And I was always the one who had to understand.""
I wanted to feel sorry for her.
A part of me did.
But then I looked at Emma.
And remembered her hand.
I remembered the fear in my daughter's scream.
Pain didn't excuse cruelty.
Never.
James looked at my father.
"Why involve Claire?""
My father looked down.
"Because Daniel was right about one thing.""
Everyone went quiet.
"What?""
"Family is the easiest thing to break.""
My stomach tightened.
My father continued.
"Lauren hated Claire.""
A pause.
"Daniel hated himself.""
Another pause.
"And I needed James distracted.""
The words landed like a weapon.
James stared.
"Why?""
My father's answer was barely audible.
"Because I knew the investigation was coming.""
The room froze.
"What investigation?""
My father looked at James.
"The accident case was reopened.""
James went still.
"When?""
"Three months ago.""
I understood.
The timing.
Everything.
Lauren.
The custody papers.
The lies.
They weren't just trying to hurt us.
They were trying to destroy James before the truth came out.
Then suddenly—
Sirens.
Outside.
Blue lights flashed through the windows.
Everyone turned.
My father looked terrified.
James looked at him.
"What did you do?""
My father whispered:
"I made sure the truth couldn't reach you.""
The front door opened.
Two officers stood outside.
One of them spoke.
"James Walker?""
James stepped forward.
"Yes.""
The officer looked at the papers in his hand.
"We need to ask you some questions regarding the reopened Sarah Mitchell case.""
My heart stopped.
James looked back at me.
At Emma.
At the life we had built.
And I knew this wasn't over.
Because as the officers entered...
Lauren's phone buzzed.
She looked down.
Her face went pale.
"What is it?"" I asked.
She slowly turned the screen toward us.
A message from an unknown number.
Only one sentence.
*You were never the final target.*
And below it was a name.
May you like
A name none of us expected.
*Claire Walker.*
