Chapter 6: The Brother My Husband Never Mentioned
The name on the paper felt heavier than it should have.
*Daniel Walker.*
I stared at the words until they blurred.
Walker.
The same last name as James.
The same last name as Emma.
The same last name I had proudly taken when we married.
But I had never heard it before.
Not once.
I looked at my husband.
"James.""
He didn't respond.
That scared me more than anything.
James always responded.
Even when he was angry.
Even when he was exhausted.
Even when he had no idea what to say.
But now he just stood there, staring at that name like it had dragged a memory out of a place he had buried.
"Who is Daniel Walker?""
His jaw tightened.
"He's my brother.""
The words hit me harder than I expected.
My mouth opened.
Then closed.
"Your brother?""
James nodded slowly.
"I haven't seen him in years.""
I looked back at the document.
"Why would your brother be involved in a custody case for Emma?""
He didn't answer.
And that silence told me there was something much bigger happening.
"James.""
He walked away from me.
Only a few steps.
But it felt like a mile.
"Tell me.""
He ran a hand over his face.
"I should have told you about him.""
The sentence made my stomach drop.
Not because he had a brother.
Because of the way he said it.
Like Daniel wasn't just family.
Like Daniel was a wound.
"What happened?""
James looked toward the Christmas tree.
The same tree we had decorated together before he left.
The same tree beneath which Emma received her first Christmas gifts.
"I had a brother named Daniel.""
His voice was quiet.
"We were close when we were younger.""
I waited.
James rarely talked about his childhood.
I knew pieces.
A strict father.
A mother who worked constantly.
A house where emotions weren't discussed.
But he had never mentioned Daniel.
"How close?""
James swallowed.
"Best friends.""
The answer surprised me.
"Then what happened?""
He looked down.
"Daniel made a mistake.""
I waited for more.
But James didn't continue.
"James.""
He finally looked at me.
"He blamed me for it.""
The room went silent.
I held Emma tighter.
"What mistake?""
James looked at the papers.
"The kind that destroys a family.""
My heart sank.
Before I could ask more, my phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
It was Emily again.
I answered quickly.
"Emily?""
Her voice sounded nervous.
"Claire, I'm sorry to call again.""
"What happened?""
"I forgot something.""
I stood straighter.
"What?""
"After Lauren left my house earlier, she got a phone call.""
My eyebrows pulled together.
"From who?""
"I don't know.""
Emily hesitated.
"But I heard her say one name.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"What name?""
There was a pause.
Then:
"Daniel.""
The room went completely still.
I looked at James.
He had heard.
His face changed.
"Emily," I said carefully, "are you sure?""
"Yes.""
Her voice was certain.
"She said, 'Daniel, I can't keep doing this alone.''"
James closed his eyes.
Like he had just been hit.
"Thank you, Emily.""
I ended the call.
For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then James picked up the folder.
"She was working with him.""
I shook my head.
"Why?""
He didn't answer.
"James.""
He looked at me.
"I don't know.""
But I knew him.
That wasn't the truth.
It was the version of the truth he was willing to give me.
"You do know something.""
He looked away.
"Not enough.""
"Then tell me what you know.""
A long silence followed.
Finally, he sat down.
And for the first time that night, I saw my husband look exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
"When I was twenty-two, Daniel got into trouble.""
"What kind of trouble?""
James stared at his hands.
"He was reckless.""
"With what?""
"Money.""
I waited.
"He borrowed from people he shouldn't have.""
My stomach tightened.
"And?""
"And when things got bad, he asked me for help.""
"Did you help him?""
James nodded.
"I paid off some of his debts.""
"Then why would he hate you?""
His expression changed.
"Because I stopped.""
I didn't understand.
"Why?""
"Because he kept doing it.""
James's voice became quieter.
"Every time I helped him, he found another problem.""
He looked toward the window.
"Eventually, I told him I couldn't keep saving him from his own choices.""
"And he blamed you?""
"Yes.""
I looked at the folder.
"But why would he want Emma?""
James didn't answer.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message.
He checked it.
His expression changed.
"What?""
He turned the phone toward me.
A photo.
Daniel Walker.
I had never seen him before.
But there was something unsettling about seeing the face of the man whose name had appeared on legal documents targeting my daughter.
He looked older than James.
Same dark hair.
Same sharp jawline.
But where James carried himself with discipline, Daniel looked careless.
A caption accompanied the photo.
*Confirmed identity. Daniel Walker. Currently working with Lauren Walker.*
I looked at James.
"How did they know?""
"Military contacts.""
"James.""
He looked at me.
"This is bigger than Lauren.""
I nodded.
Because I already knew.
Lauren was cruel.
But this?
This was organized.
Someone had planned this.
Someone had resources.
Someone had been watching us.
A thought suddenly struck me.
"How did Daniel know about Emma?""
James went quiet.
I felt my stomach twist.
"James.""
He looked at the floor.
"Because I told him.""
My heart dropped.
"What?""
"Before I left.""
The words barely came out.
"I called him.""
"Why?""
"Because I thought maybe...""
He stopped.
I waited.
"Maybe having a daughter would make him change.""
The sadness in his voice hurt.
I realized something.
James wasn't hiding Daniel because he was ashamed.
He was hiding him because he was disappointed.
He had hoped his brother could still be saved.
And now that hope had become a weapon.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
He looked at me.
"Because I didn't want you to worry.""
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was the same thing I had done.
I had hidden my struggles during his deployment.
He had hidden his family problems.
We had both been protecting each other.
And somehow, that silence had given other people space to hurt us.
I reached for his hand.
"You should have trusted me.""
"I know.""
"And I should have told you what Lauren was doing.""
He squeezed my hand.
"We both made mistakes.""
A loud knock interrupted us.
Three sharp knocks.
Everyone froze.
It was almost midnight.
No one should have been there.
James immediately stood.
"Stay back.""
My heart raced.
He walked toward the door.
Then another knock came.
This time slower.
Deliberate.
James looked through the window.
His face changed.
"What?""
He didn't answer.
"James?""
He stepped away from the door.
"Claire.""
The fear in his voice returned.
Not the controlled fear.
Real fear.
"What is it?""
He looked at me.
Then at Emma.
"It's Daniel.""
The air left my lungs.
"He's here?""
James nodded.
I moved closer.
"Why?""
Before he could answer, Daniel's voice came through the door.
"James.""
A chill ran through me.
The voice sounded calm.
Almost friendly.
Like he wasn't standing outside our house at midnight after helping someone build a case against our family.
"Open the door.""
James didn't move.
Daniel continued.
"I know you're angry.""
A pause.
"But you need to hear the truth.""
James stared at the door.
Then Daniel said the one thing that made my blood turn cold.
"Because Lauren isn't the one who started this.""
Silence.
Then:
"I am.""
James's hand slowly tightened into a fist.
And outside the door...
Daniel laughed softly.
May you like
"Now open the door, little brother.""
"Because we need to talk about what happened to Emma's mother.""
