Chapter 7: The Secret Buried Before Emma Was Born

James didn't open the door.

For almost a full minute, nobody moved.

Daniel's footsteps remained on the porch.

Slow.

Patient.

Like he knew eventually we would have to face him.

Emma stirred in my arms.

The tiny movement broke the silence.

James immediately looked at her.

His expression softened for half a second.

Then the soldier came back.

The protector.

The man who had spent nine months away from us and returned ready to defend everything he loved.

"Take Emma upstairs.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

"Claire.""

His voice was quiet.

"Take her upstairs and lock the bedroom door.""

I didn't move.

"James, I'm not leaving you alone.""

"You won't be.""

He looked at me.

"You'll be protecting our daughter.""

Those words worked.

Because he was right.

I kissed Emma's forehead and carried her toward the stairs.

But before I reached the first step, Daniel spoke again from outside.

"Still doing that, James?""

I froze.

"What?""

Daniel laughed softly.

"Still pretending you can save everyone.""

James's face changed.

I had never seen him look at anyone that way before.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Something deeper.

Pain.

I carried Emma upstairs, but I didn't close the door completely.

I needed to hear.

I needed to know what had been hidden from me.

A few seconds later, I heard the front door open.

James didn't invite him in.

Daniel entered anyway.

"Nice house.""

His voice carried through the hallway.

"Claire did well.""

My stomach tightened.

He knew my name.

Of course he did.

"You don't get to talk about my wife.""

James's voice was low.

Daniel ignored him.

"Where is she?""

"Not your concern.""

"She is.""

A pause.

"She became my concern the moment you made her part of this.""

I looked down at Emma.

Part of what?

The question had been following me all night.

What had happened before I existed in James's life?

Before our marriage?

Before Emma?

I heard footsteps.

Daniel moved through the living room.

"You know what's funny?""

James didn't answer.

"You always thought you were the responsible one.""

A bitter laugh.

"The hero.""

"Leave.""

"No.""

Daniel's voice hardened.

"You need to hear this.""

"I already know enough.""

"No, you don't.""

Silence.

Then Daniel said:

"You never told Claire about Sarah.""

My heart stopped.

Sarah.

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant something to James.

Because the room went completely silent.

Even from upstairs, I felt it.

"Don't say her name.""

James's voice was different.

Broken.

Daniel continued anyway.

"Why?""

"Because you know what happened.""

"No.""

Daniel's voice became sharp.

"You know what happened.""

I moved closer to the doorway.

Emma slept quietly against my shoulder.

I hated that she was sleeping through this.

I hated that the world around her had become so complicated.

"Who is Sarah?"" I whispered.

No one answered.

Then Daniel said:

"Tell your wife.""

James didn't speak.

"Tell her why you really joined the military.""

My breath caught.

I knew James joined because he wanted to serve.

Because he believed in protecting people.

That was what he always told me.

But suddenly, I wondered if there was more.

"Tell her about the accident.""

My fingers tightened around Emma's blanket.

Accident?

James finally spoke.

"Enough.""

"No.""

Daniel's voice rose.

"You're not hiding behind silence anymore.""

A long pause.

Then:

"Sarah was my fiancée.""

The words came from James.

Quietly.

Like admitting them hurt.

I froze.

His fiancée.

Before me.

Before our life together.

I didn't feel jealousy.

Not exactly.

I felt shocked.

Because this was a part of him I had never known existed.

Daniel continued.

"She was going to marry him.""

James said nothing.

"Until I ruined everything.""

The silence afterward was unbearable.

I slowly stepped into the hallway.

James saw me.

His face changed.

"Claire.""

I looked at him.

"Who was Sarah?""

Daniel looked at me.

Almost satisfied.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

James looked away.

And that hurt.

Because my husband had always looked at me.

Even when things were difficult.

Even when he was ashamed.

But now he couldn't.

"Claire...""

"Tell me.""

Daniel smiled faintly.

"Go ahead, James.""

I walked down the stairs.

Emma remained asleep.

James looked at me.

"I was twenty-six.""

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"Sarah and I had been together for five years.""

I listened.

"Daniel was struggling at the time.""

Daniel looked away.

"Here we go.""

James ignored him.

"He was in debt. Drinking too much. Making choices that kept getting worse.""

"And Sarah?""

James swallowed.

"She tried to help him.""

I looked at Daniel.

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"One night, Daniel borrowed my car.""

James's hands tightened.

"He said he needed to meet someone.""

The room became colder.

"When he came back, the car was damaged.""

Daniel scoffed.

"Tell the whole story.""

James looked at him.

"I did.""

"No.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Tell her why Sarah died.""

My entire body froze.

James closed his eyes.

And in that moment, I knew.

This was the secret.

The one he had carried for years.

"She was in the car.""

My voice cracked.

"What?""

James looked at me.

"Sarah was with him.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"The accident happened because of me.""

His words were quiet.

"But James blamed himself.""

I looked between them.

"I don't understand.""

James sat down slowly.

"That night, Sarah called me.""

The pain in his voice was impossible to miss.

"She wanted me to pick her up.""

A pause.

"But Daniel called first.""

I waited.

"He said he needed help.""

James looked at his brother.

"I chose to help Daniel.""

The words seemed to crush him.

"I told Sarah I'd come later.""

My eyes filled.

"James...""

"Before I got there...""

He stopped.

He couldn't finish.

He didn't need to.

Daniel did.

"She died.""

Nobody spoke.

The only sound was Emma's breathing.

My daughter's innocent breathing.

The reason this entire nightmare had started.

James stared at the floor.

"After that, Daniel disappeared.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Because he couldn't forgive himself.""

"No.""

James looked at him.

"Because you couldn't face what you did.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"And you couldn't forgive yourself.""

The two brothers stared at each other.

Years of pain between them.

Then Daniel turned to me.

"Do you understand now?""

I frowned.

"Understand what?""

"Why James needs to be perfect.""

I said nothing.

"He lost Sarah because he thought he could save everyone.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Now he has you.""

James immediately moved between us.

"Don't.""

Daniel ignored him.

"And Emma.""

His voice lowered.

"He finally has something worth protecting.""

My blood ran cold.

"What are you saying?""

Daniel looked at James.

"I'm saying he's going to lose again.""

James's face darkened.

"Get out.""

Daniel smiled.

"You still don't get it.""

"What?""

"I didn't come here to hurt Emma.""

The room went silent.

"Then why?""

Daniel looked directly at me.

"Because I came to stop Lauren.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

His expression changed.

For the first time, he didn't look like the villain.

He looked afraid.

"Lauren lied to you.""

James narrowed his eyes.

"You're working with her.""

"I was.""

The answer stunned all of us.

Daniel continued.

"At first.""

My stomach dropped.

"At first?""

He nodded.

"She contacted me months ago.""

James went still.

"Why?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Because she wasn't trying to take Emma.""

A pause.

"She was trying to expose something about James.""

I looked at my husband.

"What?""

James looked as confused as I felt.

Daniel reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Then placed it on the table.

"I found out what Lauren was really after.""

James didn't touch it.

"What is it?""

Daniel looked at him.

"Proof.""

"Of what?""

Daniel's eyes moved to me.

Then back to James.

"That the accident with Sarah wasn't the reason your life fell apart.""

My heart stopped.

James stared.

"What are you talking about?""

Daniel's voice dropped.

"Because someone else was there that night.""

A chill moved through me.

"Who?""

Daniel looked at the envelope.

Then at James.

"The same person who has been helping Lauren destroy your family.""

James stepped forward.

"Who?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Your father.""

May you like

The room went silent.

And upstairs, Emma suddenly began crying.
