Chapter 8: The Truth My Family Buried

Emma's cry cut through the room.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not James.

Not Daniel.

Not me.

Because the accusation hanging in the air felt too impossible to process.

*Your father.*

My mind rejected it.

Robert Walker.

The man who had spent the evening sitting silently at the dinner table.

The man who had carved the turkey.

The man who had looked uncomfortable when Lauren hurt Emma.

The man who had always seemed like the reasonable one.

My husband slowly turned toward Daniel.

"What did you say?""

Daniel didn't flinch.

"I said your father was there.""

James's expression hardened.

"Don't.""

"I'm not lying.""

"Don't talk about my father like you know anything.""

Daniel laughed quietly.

"That's the problem, James.""

He pointed toward the envelope.

"You don't know anything.""

The sound of Emma crying upstairs reminded me that I couldn't stand there forever.

I turned toward the stairs.

James immediately followed.

But before he moved, he looked at Daniel.

"Stay here.""

Daniel nodded.

For once, he didn't argue.

I went upstairs and lifted Emma from her crib.

She immediately grabbed my shirt.

Her little face pressed against me.

I whispered softly.

"I'm here.""

But my own voice sounded uncertain.

Because I wasn't sure anymore who was safe.

Who was telling the truth.

Who had been lying.

When I came back downstairs, James was standing by the table.

The envelope was still untouched.

Daniel stood across from him.

Two brothers.

Two men carrying years of anger.

And somehow, both of them were connected to the nightmare that had entered our home.

James looked at me.

"Are you okay?""

I almost laughed.

The question was so simple.

So normal.

But nothing about tonight was normal.

"I don't know.""

He looked hurt.

Not because of my answer.

Because he understood.

Neither of us knew what to believe anymore.

Daniel spoke quietly.

"Open the envelope.""

James didn't move.

"Why should I trust anything from you?""

Daniel looked down.

"You shouldn't.""

That surprised me.

He continued.

"I know what I did.""

The room went quiet.

"I know what kind of person I became.""

James's expression didn't change.

"But if you don't open that envelope, Lauren wins.""

James looked at him.

"What does Lauren want?""

Daniel took a breath.

"She wants to destroy you.""

"Why?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Because she believes Claire is the reason she lost everything.""

I frowned.

"What?""

Daniel continued.

"Lauren has spent years comparing herself to you.""

I shook my head.

"That doesn't make sense.""

"It does to her.""

He looked toward the papers on the table.

"She believed you took the life she deserved.""

My stomach tightened.

"What life?""

"The stable marriage. The house. The child. The family everyone loved.""

I stared at him.

"She was jealous?""

Daniel nodded.

"But jealousy wasn't enough.""

He looked at James.

"She needed someone who understood how to hurt you.""

James's face changed.

"You.""

Daniel looked away.

"Yes.""

The admission was painful.

"I gave her information.""

My anger rose.

"You helped her?""

Daniel nodded.

"At first.""

I stepped forward.

"At first?""

He looked at me.

"I thought she wanted to expose James.""

"Expose him for what?""

Daniel didn't answer.

James did.

"Sarah.""

The room went silent.

Daniel nodded.

"Lauren convinced me James had lied about that night.""

My eyes moved between them.

"And you believed her?""

Daniel looked ashamed.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

His answer was quiet.

"Because I wanted someone else to blame.""

That honesty was almost worse.

For years, he had carried guilt.

But instead of facing it, he had allowed someone to use it.

James picked up the envelope.

His hands were steady.

But I knew him.

I saw the tension in his jaw.

He was afraid.

He opened it.

Inside was a stack of documents.

And a photograph.

James pulled out the photo first.

The color drained from his face.

"What?""

He handed it to me.

It was old.

A photograph from years ago.

A street at night.

A damaged car.

A police officer.

And standing in the background...

My father.

I looked closer.

"That's your father?""

James nodded slowly.

"I've never seen this picture.""

Daniel spoke.

"Because it was never supposed to exist.""

James looked at him.

"Where did you get it?""

"From Lauren.""

The answer confused me.

"She had it?""

Daniel nodded.

"She found it while digging into your family's past.""

James stared at the photograph.

"Why would she have this?""

Daniel's expression became serious.

"Because she wasn't investigating you.""

A pause.

"She was investigating Robert.""

The room felt colder.

I thought about my father.

The way he avoided conflict.

The way he always protected the family's image.

The way he had gone silent when Lauren hurt Emma.

Suddenly, silence didn't feel harmless anymore.

It felt intentional.

James picked up the next document.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

"What?""

He didn't answer.

"James.""

He handed it to me.

It was a police report.

An old one.

The date was twenty years earlier.

The accident.

I read the details.

A vehicle collision.

One fatality.

One injured driver.

But one sentence caught my attention.

*Witness statement: A second vehicle was observed leaving the scene before emergency services arrived.*

I looked up.

"There was another car.""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

James stared at the report.

"Why didn't I know?""

"Because your father made sure you didn't.""

My husband looked up sharply.

"What?""

Daniel continued.

"After the accident, your father told you the police investigation was complete.""

James's face changed.

"But it wasn't.""

"No.""

Daniel shook his head.

"The investigation disappeared.""

I felt sick.

"How?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Your father had connections.""

The room went silent.

James sat down.

For the first time all night, he looked lost.

"Why would he do that?""

Daniel didn't answer.

I think he didn't want to.

But James needed the truth.

"Why?""

Daniel finally spoke.

"Because the other driver was someone he knew.""

James looked at him.

"Who?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then:

"Someone who could destroy his career.""

The pieces started connecting.

The custody papers.

Lauren.

Daniel.

My father.

The accident.

It was all connected.

But one question remained.

"Why Emma?""

Everyone looked at me.

"Why involve my daughter?""

Daniel's expression darkened.

"Because Lauren knew the one thing that would break James.""

He looked at my husband.

"Family.""

James closed his eyes.

Daniel continued.

"She knew he lost Sarah.""

"She knew he blamed himself.""

"And she knew if she threatened Emma, he would react.""

I looked at James.

And I hated that Daniel was right.

James would do anything for Emma.

Anything.

Then my phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message.

From my mother.

My heart stopped.

*Claire, don't trust Daniel.*

I frowned.

Another message appeared.

*He is lying to you.*

Then another.

*Your father needs to explain everything.*

I showed James.

His expression tightened.

"Call her.""

I did.

Margaret answered immediately.

"Claire?""

Her voice sounded panicked.

"Mom, what is happening?""

A long pause.

Then:

"Where are you?""

"Home.""

Another pause.

"Is Daniel there?""

I looked at him.

"Yes.""

My mother's breathing changed.

"Claire, listen to me carefully.""

The urgency in her voice scared me.

"Your father didn't hide the accident because he was protecting Daniel.""

I stood frozen.

"Then why?""

Her answer came quietly.

"Because he was protecting himself.""

Nobody spoke.

Then my mother whispered:

"Your father wasn't the witness.""

A pause.

"He was the reason Sarah died.""

The phone slipped slightly in my hand.

James went completely still.

And before any of us could respond, another sound came from outside.

A car door slammed.

Everyone turned toward the window.

Headlights flooded the living room.

James moved instantly.

"Who's here?""

I looked outside.

My blood ran cold.

Because standing in our driveway...

was my father.

May you like

And he wasn't alone.

Beside him stood Lauren.
